UT was established in 1931 as a junior college. IN 1933 the school moved to it's current location which was then the defunct Tampa Bay hotel. The school received it's full accreditation in 1951.
Financial troubles hit the school in the early 1990's. The school had budget deficits for consecutive years as a result of declining student enrollment. The University President resigned, faculty left for other opportunities and the school faced an uncertain future.
In 1995 the school got a new President, elected by the Board of Trustees to lead the school out of it's troubles and prevent bankruptcy. Dr. Ronald Vaughn, who was the Dean of the School of Business became the new President. Vaughn was able to raise over 83 Million Dollars in a 10 year span to get the school passed the 70 million dollar goal it had set. Two gifts of 10 million and 28 million dollars were given by the John H.Sykes Family. One in 1997 for 10 mill and then a 28 million dollar gift in 2000 which were thought to be the largest gifts to a Florida University at the time of the donations. The Sykes were just residents of Tampa, and had no one who had attended UT in the family. Vaughn is now one of the 10 highest paid employers of a private, mid level institution after resurrecting UT.
