Balanced Offense, Stifling Defense Lift Rollins To Rout Of Eckerd.

The Rollins College Tars came into Saturday with a bad taste in their mouth after a rough performance on Wednesday against Lynn. They left no doubt in this one as they routed Eckerd 90-65 at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Mayson Quartlebaum scored a season high 25 points, Omar Figueroa added 19, and Jah Nze tallied 15 in the win.

"What. a tail of two different teams," Rollins assistant coach Kyle Frakes said in the postgame show after defeating the team that they lost to by 26 points on the road in the first meeting and then came back to beat by 25 at home.

"How about Mayson Quarterlbaum tonight? His game is really starting to come along and I don't know a single person in our program who doesn't root for that kid after beating cancer," Frakes added.

Rollins (12-9 6-7 SSC) won for the third time in the past four games. The Tars shot 60 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent (7-21) from the 3-point line, and 56.5 percent (13-23) from the free throw line in the win.

Eckerd (10-10 4-9 SSC) got 14 points from Miguel Llompart, Timothy Thompson added 11, while both Jacob Davis and Caden Walton tallied 10. The Tritons shot 40 percent from the field, 21.7 percent (5-23) from the 3-point line, and 61.5 percent (16-26) from the free throw line.

Rollins jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead to start this one after a Jackson Gaffney triple at the 17:56 mark of the first half. The lead grew to 11 on a pair of occasions. After a layup by Quartlebaum at the 9:01 mark of the first half  Rollins had a 10 point lead (26-16.) Another Quartlebaum layup at the 2:51 mark of the half made the lead 16 (36-20.) Rollins would take a 16 point advantage (43-27) into the locker room. Rollins shot 54.5 percent from the field, 28.6 percent (4-14) from the 3-point line, and 42.9 percent (3-7) at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. Eckerd shot 36 percent from the field, 15.4 percent from three (2-13) and 63.6 percent (7-11) at the free throw line in the first half.

The second half saw the Tritons provide some resistance early on but ultimately the Tars would cruise. After being within 13 (57-44) after a Llompart trey Rollins would go on the game deciding run. Over the next 7:37 Rollins would score 27 points to just 13 for Eckerd and the lead was 27 (84-57.) The win was punctuated by a breakaway dunk by Quartlebaum. The rebounding was all even at 34 for the two teams. Rollins had 22 assists and seven turnovers in the complete effort. Both Quartlebaum and Figueroa added three steals as well.

Eckerd had 12 assists and 14 turnovers in this one. They lost for the fourth straight time. Leading scorer on the season Wyatt Triestman was held scoreless on five field goal attempts.

Frakes said this about the defense on him:

"How about Matus (Malovec) today? He holds Eckerd's leading scorer scoreless. You look at the box score and see he was just 0-2 from the field. He was +21 in his minutes. If you asked him he would probably tell you he'd like to score 8-10 points but he has been so good for us," Frakes explained.

Rollins will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech at the Clemente Center. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.

Rare Home Clunker Leads To Lynn Sweep Of Tars

For much of the 2025-26 basketball season the Rollins College Tars have been rock solid at home. That was not the case on Wednesday night as for just the third time in 11 tries Rollins left Warden Arena with a loss. It was never much of a game as the Tars fell to 11-9 and 5-7 in the SSC with the 86-69 loss. Lynn improved to 11-8 and 6-6 in the SSC and completed the season sweep of Rollins.

Four Rollins free throws (three by Figueora and one by Quartlebaum) got them within six (42-36) with 1:52 in the half. The Fighting Knights would end up taking a 10 point lead (48-38) into the locker room. A Figueroa triple finally got Rollins on the board in half number two. That sparked a 8-0 run by Rollins as a Niemann trey made it 58-46. The lead would grow to as many as 21. Another 8-0 Rollins spurt got them to within 13 (72-59) after a Figueroa layup at the 6:12 mark. Rollins shot 40 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (9-27) from the 3-point line, and 84.2 percent (16-19) from the free throw line. They had 19 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest.

Rollins Falls To #3 Nova Southeastern

For a team like Rollins College to beat a team like #3 Nova Southeastern just about everything has to fall into place. Rollins hung with the Sharks for much of the game but a tough night from leading scorer Jah Nze was the undoing of the Tars. Rollins ended up falling to 9-7 on the year and 3-5 in the SSC after a 91-73 loss against Nova Southeastern at Warden Arena. The Sharks improved to 11-1 and 6-1 in the SSC as they handed Rollins just their second home loss of the season.

It was Rollins that got off to the quick start on Saturday. A layup by Omar Figueroa, three free throws by Nze, and layup my Mayson Quartlebaum gave the Tars a 7-1 lead at the 17:19 mark of the first half. After Jackson Gaffney knocked down two free throws Rollins led 14-3 with 15:32 until halftime. NSU would battle back and take the lead 22-17 after a 19-3 run. A jumper by Dallas Graziani and a triple by Ross Reeves accounted for that score. Nova saw its lead grow to 14 (34-20) on a Eli Allen layup with 6:44 in the first half. It would be the Tars that would fight back this time and knot the game at 41 after a pair of Figueroa free throws. NSU would take the lead after two Graziani free throws gave them a 43-41 lead heading into halftime. Rollins shot 40 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from the 3-point line (5-12) and 94.1 percent (16-17) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. NSU shot 42.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line, and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.

Rollins would tie the game at 50 after a Ricky Ghedini layup with 13:54 on the clock.NSU would go on a 10-2 run to open up an eight point lead (60-52.) Rollins would counter with a 7-0 run of their own as Figueroa and Ghedini each hit a triple to make it 60-59 NSU with 8:53 to go. An 8-0 run by the Sharks gave them more separation. Rollins would get to within six (68-62) on a Marshall Klug free throw but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way. The #3 Sharks would flex their muscles late to put this one away. Ghedini led three Rollins players in double figures with 16 points, Figueroa added 15, and Jackson Gaffney netted 11. Rollins shot 37.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (9-27) from the 3-point line, and 86.7 percent (26-30) from the free throw line in the loss. They had 15 assists and 21 turnovers in the contest. They also won the rebounding battle 35-31.

NSU was led by Graziani and Reeves who each had 23, Bobby Rosenberger added 14, and Jaxson Nap tallied 10. The Sharks shot 49.2 percent from the field, 35 percent (7-20) from the 3-point line, and 74.3 percent (26-35) at the free throw line. NSU had 16 assists and nine turnovers in the contest.

Defensive Pressure, Big Day From Nze Power Surging Tars To 79-69 Win At Barry

The Rollins College Tars had an eventful day on Saturday to say the least. After the start of Saturday's game in Miami Shores got delayed by nearly two hours as the team bus got a flat tire Rollins put together a scrappy win at the Health & Sports Center.  It all started on the defensive end where the Tars forced 23 Barry turnovers. Jah Nze had a big day for Rollins as he poured in 31 points to go along with six rebounds, four steals, a pair of assists and a pair of blocked shots. He was joined in double figures by Omar Figueroa who had 17 points to go with a game high five steals, and  Jackson Gaffney netted 10. With its fourth win in five contests the surging Tars improve to 9-5 and 3-3 in the SSC. Barry was paced by Deon Perry with 29 points, Marko Sarenac tallied 16 points to go with 13 rebounds, and Jose Benitez tallied 10. With the loss the Bucs fall to 6-7 and 1-4 in the SSC.

The two teams went back and forth in the early going as Barry led 9-8 after a Ryan Renfro layup for the Tars at the 15:10 mark of the first half. Gui Tesch put Barry up 16-11 but Rollins would respond with an Nze triple. It was 22-18 Barry and they took a 26-20 lead before Rollins came back and knotted the game at 28 on a Ricky Ghedini trey at the 2:22 mark of the first half. That would be the beginning of a 9-0 Rollins run to close the first half as Figueroa, Nze, and Renfro would score to give Rollins a 34-28 lead at halftime. In the opening half Rollins shot 40 percent from the field, 27.8 percent (3-11) from the 3-point line, and 78.6 percent (11-14) at the free throw line. Barry shot 57.1 percent in the first 20 minutes, 22.2 percent (2-9) from the 3-point line, and 50 percent (2-4) from the free throw line in the half.

An Nze layup and triple gave Rollins a 9 points lead (39-30) with 18:26 to go. After five quick points by Barry got them within four Rollins answered with a 7-0 run of their own to lead by 11 (46-35) after an Nze steal and layup with 16:29 to go. The Bucs went on a 7-0 run as a pair of Sarenac free throws got the home team within four (46-42) with 13:16 to go. After a Malik Stanley triple with 11:57 on the clock we were tied at 48. After each team made a free throw Rollins would get the lead back on a Mayson Quartlebaum layup at the 9:50 mark. That would be a lead the Tars would not relinquish as they went on a 11-0 run capped by a Nze block and Figueroa layup that had the Tars up 60-49 with 7:57 to go. Barry would get to within six on a Sarenac layup at the 3:51 mark but Figueroa would knock down a trey, Rollins would make free throws down the stretch and do just enough to come away with their first true road win of the season. Rollins shot 46.2 percent from the field, 26.3 percent (5-19) from the 3-point line, and 78.8 percent (26-33) from the free throw line. Rollins had 10 assists and 15 turnovers in the win. They also had a season high 16 steals in the contest.
