The Rollins Tars used a 17-2 run that turned a 12 point deficit (47-35) into a five point lead (52-47) to propel them to a 97-90 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday at Rubin Arena in West Palm Beach. The win, coupled with Barry knocking off Eckerd Saturday afternoon meant that Rollins, Barry and Eckerd shared the conference regular season title at 12-4. With the win Saturday the Tars improved to 21-7 on the season. While the Sailfish ended the season at 12-14. The Tars improved by 12 wins from a year ago. The 21 wins is the most since going 25-7 in the 2010-11 season.
Jeff Merton led the Tars with 21 points on the day. The sophomore from Naples was 7 of 11 from the floor despite being sick the last couple days- Sam Philpott continued his monster conference season with another double-double (20 points and 10 rebounds.) The Tars also got 12 points each from James Ferrell, Mike Bedulskis, and Sharif Almulla.
Rollins shot 54 percent (31-57) for the game, including 67 percent (16-24) in the second half. They shot 77 percent (26-34) from the free throw line- and- shot at a 43 percent clip (9-21) from the 3-point line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 37-31. They had 15 assists and 15 turnovers.
The Sailfish were led by 21 points from Bakari Warthen- Nigel Sydnor added 20- while Michael Simpson scored 17. They shot 45 percent (30-67) from the field- shot 31 percent (11-36) from the 3-point line- and- shot 73 percent (19-26) at the free throw line. The Sailfish had 15 assists and nine turnovers.
In the early going the pace was very quick as both teams would trade baskets. The lead changed hands four times in the first three minutes and was tied at 7 at the 17 minute mark of the half. The Salfish would scored five of the next seven points, before the Tars would go on a 11-2 run to take a six point lead (20-14) at the 10:59 mark of the opening half. After scoring nine consecutive points PBA would take a 25-23 lead at the 8:07 mark of the half. The lead would change hands three more times over the next four minutes, then the Sailfish would go on a big run to take a 12 point lead (47-35) right before halftime. The Tars would get score the last five points of the half, all courtesy of Philpott to trim the deficit to seven (47-40.)
The halftime break would not slow down the Tars. They would score the first six points of the second half, and would eventually take a five point lead (54-49) at the 16:35 mark.
Rollins would not be able to shake the Sailfish though. It would be 70-66 Rollins at the 8:26 mark of the game.
PBA would cut the deficit to one (72-71) before Ferrell and Deion Clark would hit 3-pointer's on back to back possessions. The 3-pointer by Clark was just his fourth of the season and gave the Tars a 78-71 lead with just under six minutes to go. The Sailfish would get to within two two more times but that is as close as they would get.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday night. The Tars who are the #3 seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Tournament will host #6 Lynn at Warden Arena. Tip time is set for 7 PM. Panthers Steal One On Senior Day.
The Florida Tech Panthers stole a victory literally and figuratively from the Rollins Tars on Saturday. A turnover that led to a steal and bucket in the waning seconds led to the Tars falling 75-72 to Florida Tech on Saturday. With the loss Rollins falls to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in the SSC. The loss snaps a six game win streak for the Tars. FIT won for just the fourth time in the last 13 games, as they improved to 13-12 and 5-9 in conference.
Sam Daniel led the Panthers and all scorers with 29 points on the day. Daniel nailed seven of his 15 3-point attempts- Corbin Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds- while Jordan Majors chipped in 13 for Florida Tech. The Panthers shot 45 percent (27-60) on the day, including 33 percent (12-36) from the 3-point line. FIT shot 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line in the game. The Panthers had 20 assists and 13 turnovers as a team.
Rollins was led by a 22 point effort from Jeff Merton- Sam Philpott also scored in double figures with 18- James Ferrell added nine- while Deion Clark scored eight to go along with a career high 12 rebounds.
The Tars shot 44 percent (27-61) in the game- they shot 29 percent (10-34) from the 3-point line. The Tars were right on there season numbers at the free throw line as they shot 80 percent (8-10.) Rollins dominated the rebounding battle out rebounding FIT 41-29. They had 22 assists and turned the ball over 18 times.
As has been the case for the 36 years since Tom Klusman has been the coach Rollins started all their seniors on Senior day. A ceremony was held prior to the game to honor Sharif Almulla, James Ferrell, Kyle Koszuta, and Alex Blessig. Once the game started it was very evident that the starting five from Saturday had not played together before. Before you could blink Rollins trailed 15-0 and were down by 28 (29-1) eight minutes into the contest. The Tars would answer with a 33-5 run of their own to knot the game at 34 with 45 seconds left in the opening half. A Jackson bucket late would give the Panthers a two point lead (36-34) at the half.
The Panthers would come out and stretch the lead to seven in the early stages of the second half before the teams would battle for the next 10 minutes. Rollins, after tying the game a couple times would take what would be their first lead of the game at the 6:35 mark after a Joey Galvis layup. Galvis would not be able to complete the old fashioned 3-point play after he was fouled. The two teams would continue to trade blows. At the 2:01 mark the game would be tied at 69 before Merton would nail a deep 3-pointer from the top of the key to give Rollins what would be the biggest lead of the game at 72-69. The Panthers would cut it to one after an offensive rebound. Rollins would have the ball up one with 16 seconds to go and a costly turnover underneath the basket would lead to a Panthers layup that would ultimately be the game winner. Ferrell would have a chance to atone for his mistake at the other end but his runner in the lane would bounce off the back rim. FIT would seal it with a pair of free throws. Rollins would not get a shot off to tie it as another turnover would lead to the Panthers victory.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they host #12 Barry. Tip time at Warden Arena is set for 730 PM. You can catch all the action on the Geico Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park.

Tars Win Fifth Straight, Edge Sharks Again.
For the second time this season the Rollins Tars got all they could handle from the Nova Southeastern Sharks. This time around it was a 78-75 win over NSU for Rollins. With the victory the Tars improve to 16-6 overall and 8-3 in the SSC. After the defeat NSU drops to 9-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
Rollins was led by leading scorer on the season Jeff Merton. Merton bounced back from a rare poor scoring output on Wednesday to lead all scorers with 23 points. He also put the game away for the Tars on the defensive end with a pair of steals in the game's last minute. Sam Philpott continued to impress with 15 points off the bench. Deion Clark just missed a double-double (12 points and nine rebounds.) Joey Galvis came up big for the second time in as many match-ups with NSU. The Tampa Jesuit product scored 11 points and iced the game with two free throws with three seconds to go. Rollins shot 41 percent (25-61) in the game. They shot at a 80 percent clip (16-20) from the free throw line- while making 12 of 35 from the 3-point line (34 percent.)
NSU was led by the duo of Chris Page and Harrison Goodrick. Page had 22 in just 26 minutes- while Goodrick added 21 of his own. The Sharks shot 43 percent from the floor (27-63) in the game. They shot at a 31 percent clip (11-36) from the 3-point line- and- shot 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. The Sharks won the rebounding battle 41-35. They had 17 assists and 15 turnovers.
It was NSU who got off to the quick start in this one. They would have a seven point lead (21-14) at the 10:41 mark of the opening half. Rollins would have an answer though. The Tars would go on a 17-2 run to take a 31-23 lead with 4:36 in the opening half. The lead would shrink to two (39-37) after a pair of a Page 3-pointer's right before halftime.
The Sharks would tie the game on three separate occasions but Rollins would never trail in the second stanza. The lead was between two and eight for most of the second half. The Tars led by eight (72-64) after a Galvis 3-pointer at the 3:09 mark. Another Page 3-pointer at the 2:20 mark would pull NSU within four (72-68.) The Tars would stretch the lead back to six at the two minute mark after a Philpott basket. 53 seconds later Dwayne Gibson would drain a 3-pointer to cut the Rollins lead to one (74-73.) After a steal by Page the Sharks would have the ball with a chance to take the lead but Merton would get a big steal at the 30 second mark. Deion Clark would miss the front end of a one and one but once again Merton would get in the passing lane with 12 seconds left. Merton would make both free throws to give Rollins a three point lead. A Casey Carroll dunk at the three second mark would pull NSU within one. After a Rollins timeout Galvis would hit a pair of free throws to win it. Page had a desperation heave from half court to tie it but it would be off the mark and the Tars would secure the victory.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday night when travel to the Jenkins FieldHouse. Tip time from Florida Southern is set for 7:30 PM.
