Monstrous Second Half Propels 17th Ranked Tars To Sixth Straight Win.

It was a tale of two halves for the Rollins College Tars on Wednesday night at Barry.  Whatever coach Tom Klusman and his staff said in the locker room worked to perfection after a lackluster first half. The Tars ended up coasting to a 72-55 victory.
Rollins (14-2 6-0 SSC) won for the sixth straight time. It kept the Tars perfect both away from Warden Arena and in the conference. Rollins was led by four players who scored in double figures. Adam Allen paced the Tars for the second straight game with 14 points.  He was three of eight from the 3-point line and also had a four point play in the second half.  Mitch Woods had a very solid game with 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds.  Jeff Dirkin also had 12 points, this included two of two from the 3-point line.  Kyle McClanahan netted 10 points, dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds in the win.
Barry fell to 1-5 in the conference and 7-8 overall.  The Bucs were paced by Justin McCoy who put up 21 points,  McCoy was just four of 10 from the field but hit 12 of his 13 free throw attempts.  Aaron Martin scored 16 points including three 3-pointers and Chad Renfro added 8.
The Tars shot 53 percent to 34 percent for the Buccaneers. Rollins shot 46 percent (12-26) from the 3-point line, while the Bucs were just 30 percent (6-20.) Barry made 88 percent of it's free throws (21-24.) The Tars hit just 62 percent (8-13.) Rollins won the rebounding battle 28-26.  Barry had 19 turnovers to 16 for the Tars.
The game started out well for Barry. The Bucs would jump out to a early seven point lead (10-3) in the first seven minutes. Aaron Martin would nail his first three 3-point attempts for the Buccaneers.  The Tars would get some much needed offense off the bench, as Chris Uhle and Adam Allen would nail a trio of big three's (two by Allen.)  The game would be played evenly for much of the rest of half until Barry would go up by seven (32-25.)  McClanahan would hit a runner to cut the lead to five (32-27) at halftime.
The Tars would come out with great emotion and would go on a 27-2 run that turned a 32-27 deficit into a 54-34 lead. Barry would not make its first field goal of the second half until more than ten minutes in.  The Tars stifling zone would salt away this victory.  Barry would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way as the Tars would cruise to the 72-55 win.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday when they head to Davey,Fla. to take on the Preseason favorite to win the conference (Saint Leo.)  Tip time at the Marion Bowman Activities Center is set for 4 PM on Saturday.  You can catch all the action on RollinsSports.Com and WPRK Winter Park.

Tars Roll Past PBA.

Many people wondered after Tom Klusman got win number 600 on Wednesday night if his team would have a letdown on Saturday. The Tars answered all those questions early Saturday.
Rollins (11-2 3-0 SSC) jumped out to a 20-4 lead early and led by 30 at the half.  They would cruise to a 18 point victory. Dave Diakite had a career day, the UCF transfer had 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the win.  Adam Allen came off the bench and scored 20.  The Florida transfer was five of seven from the 3-point line in 24 minutes.  Lukas Winegarner was four of four from the field including a three for his 10 points in 10 minutes of action.  The Tars shot 57 percent (29-51) from the field and knocked down 11 of 25 3-pointers (44 percent.) The Tars made 73 percent (17-22) from the foul line.  The Tars out rebounded the Sailfish 33-24.  They had 25 assists and 17 turnovers.
PBA fell to 1-12 on the season with a 10th straight loss.  Four Sailfish players scored in double figures on the day.  Marcus Hardy and Dante Valentine scored 16 points each to pace PBA.  Jonathan Kreidt added 12 and Salim Faurus had 11 to round out the double digit scorers.  PBA shot 38 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line in the loss.  They shot 82 percent at the foul line. The Sailfish had 12 assists and 14 turnovers.

The lone win came against Lynn in November.  Marcus Hardly leads the Sailfish at 17.6 points a game.  He also pulls down 7.6 rebounds a night.  Christian Martinez (12.6 ppg) and Dante Valentine (11.3 ppg) also score in double digits.  They score 69.7 a game, while they struggle at the defensive end giving up 83.7 a contest.

600! Tars Get Coach Another Big Road Win.

The Rollins Tars (10-2 3-0 SSC) knocked off the Panthers of Florida Tech 74-62 Wednesday night at the Clemente Center and got coach Tom Klusman his 600th win in his 33rd year as coach of the Tars.
The Tars used some solid 3-point shooting 11-25 (45 percent,) including five of eight from the 3-point line in the second half. The Tars shot 49 percent overall (24-49) in the victory.
The Tars were led by a trio of starters in double figures. Kyle McClanahan netted 19 points, had six rebounds and dished out six assists.  Dave Diakite scored 16, including a perfect 10 of 10 from the foul line, while Brett Chance chipped in 15 behind solid shooting. Chance was five of six from the floor and nailed three of four from the 3-point line.  The Tars had 12 assists and turned the ball over 21 times.
For the Panthers (6-5 0-2 SSC) the loss was the fourth in the past six contests.  Only one player scored in double figures.  Chris Carter led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  The Panthers  were stymied by the Tars zone defense all night. They shot 37 percent from the field (22-60) and really struggled from the 3-point line where they shot 10.5 percent (2-19.)  The Panthers shot 76 percent (16-21) at the foul line on the evening.  Florida Tech won the battle of the boards 36-35.  They had seven assists and turned the ball over 15 times.  The Panthers did have 12 steals.  The leader in the nation Julius Reed had six and is now averaging 4.5 per game.
The game went back and forth in the first several minutes and would be deadlocked at 16 until a Kyle McClanahan 3-pointer would give the Tars a 19-16 lead with 10:07 in the half.  After a Randy Echols basket would cut the lead to 19-18 the Tars would reel off the game's next 16 points.  McClanahan would hit a pair of 3-pointers, Chance would have a five point run by himself and then a thunderous dunk on a breakaway by Dave Diakite would get the Tars bench fired up.  Chance would hit another three and then Jeff Dirkin would split a pair of free throws to make it 35-18 with 4:27 in the half.   The Tars lead would be 37-23 headed to the locker room.
The Panthers scored the first four points of the second half and the Tars lead would be 10 (37-27) after a David Usic layup fifty seconds in.  In the next three minutes the Tars would stretch the lead to 17 (48-31) after a Mitch Woods three.  The Tars would lead by as many as 20 (60-40) and would cruise for the last ten minutes to get Klusman his milestone win.
Here are a few thoughts from some current Tars on coach Klusman after 600 wins:
"Coach Klusman is the man. We all love him to death. He is a great coach. We are very lucky to play under Coach Klusman said Kyle Schenider."
Jeff Dirkin added these comments:
" Klusman has an exceptional talent for managing and motivating players.  He believes in every one of us, often more than we believe in ourselves.  That is a very powerful motivator".
  Corey Goedde agreed:
" He's a legendary coach and to be as successful as he has for as long as he has been coaching is a pretty amazing thing."
Florida Tech issued Klusman a basketball signifying his 600th win.
Rollins will be back in action on Saturday when they take a step back from conference play and battle Palm Beach Atlantic at Warden Arena. Tip time is set for 4 PM.

Tars,Klusman Seek History Wednesday.

The Rollins College Tars (9-2 2-0 SSC) seek to make history when they travel to Florida Tech to take on the Panthers at the Clemente Center in Melbourne Wednesday. Coach Tom Klusman sitting at 599 career wins will look to become the fifth active coach in DII to win 600 games.
The Tars are coming off a big road win, when they knocked off previously unbeaten Tampa 72-66 on Saturday.  Kyle McClanahan comes into Wednesday leading the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game.  McClanahan is second in the SSC in field goal percentage (60.2 percent) and fourth in assists (5.0 per game). McClanahan is coming off a career high 26 points in Saturday's win.  Two other players score in double figures.  Dave Diakite is scoring 13.5 points per game and Brett Chance is scoring 10.2 points a game.  The Tars are scoring 74.5 points per game, while they allow 62.5  a contest. A win would assure the Tars to stay atop the SSC as St.Leo will take on Florida Southern Wednesday night.
Rollins has dropped three straight games to Florida Tech.  The Tars received 15 votes in the latest NABC DII Coaches Poll this week.
Florida Tech (6-4 0-1 SSC) has lost three of five after a 4-1 start. The Panthers are coming off the first regular season title in school history a season ago.  FIT's lone conference game was a 86-80 overtime loss to Barry.  The top two scorers in the SSC are from Florida Tech.  Chris Carter pours in a game high 21 points a game, while Jermaine Jackson puts up 19.9 a contest.  Julius Reed rounds out the double figure scorers at 15 points per game and leads the nation at 4.4 steals a night.
The Panthers high flying offense is averaging 85.2 points a game.  Defensively, the Panthers are near the bottom of the league allowing 71.6 points a contest.  Last time out, FIT rolled 94-61 over Palm Beach Atlantic. Three players scored in double figures led by the 32 points and 10 rebounds from Jermaine Jackson.  Chris Carter had 21 points and nine rebounds, while Julius Reed had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Rollins Tars (9-2 2-0 SSC) came into the Bob Martinez Center Saturday and knocked the Spartans off 72-66 to give coach Tom Klusman win number 599 in his coaching career.
Kyle McClanahan had a career game for the Tars. McClanahan put up a career high 26 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists in 38 minutes of action. The Winter Park native was 8 of 11 from the field and 10 of 12 at the foul line on the day.  Dave Diakite continued his solid play of late, he scored 14 points and had three steals.  The Tars shot 56 percent for the game, this included a blistering 70 percent (14-20) in the second half. The Tars could not find the stroke from long range on Saturday, going just  4-15 (27 percent).  The Tars made 27 trips to the foul line, making 18 (67 percent).  The Tars edged Tampa on the boards 28-27.  They had 17 assists along with 13 turnovers.
Tampa fell to 12-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play with the loss.  The Spartans had two players in double figures on the day. Anthony Griffis led the way with 18 points.  Da'Marko Foster netted 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss.  Tampa shot 47 percent (24-51) for the game and went just three of seven at the foul line.  The Spartans were 15 of 36 from the 3 point line, had 20 assists and turned the ball over 18 times.

Tars Face Giant Road Test Saturday.

The Rollins Tars (8-2) will play about as big a game as you can play in January when they travel to the Bob Martinez Center to face the undefeated 22nd ranked Tampa Spartans.
The Tars (8-2) are coming off a split of a pair of games in the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament. In the opener Rollins reeled off their eight straight win with a 71-61 victory over Mansfield. The next afternoon Shaw knocked off the Tars in the title game.
Dave Diakite had a solid tournament for the Tars, scoring 23 points in the opener and 20 in the nightcap.  Adam Allen scored 11 in the title game after sitting out the opener (knee) and Kyle McClanahan was also a member of the All Tournament team along with Diakite.
The Tars come into Saturday's game averaging 74.7 points and allow just 62. 2 a game.   Kyle McClamahan is the leading scorer at 14.2 points a game, which is ninth in the SSC.  He is third in the conference in assists at 5.1 a game and is tied for second in the league in field goal percentage (59 percent).  Diakite is second on the team at 13.4 a game.  He leads the team in rebounding at 5.4 a night and has 18 steals as well.  The Tars have two other players, Brett Chance (10.8 ppg) and Adam Allen (10.1 ppg) averaging double figures.  The Tars were picked fourth in the preseason and are 1-0 thus far in conference play.  The Tars were 8-3 last season and finished 16-11 overall.

The Tampa Spartans (12-0) were picked last in the conference preseason but have run off twelve straight wins to start the campaign. Tampa currently sits 22nd in the coaches poll.  The Spartans have already doubled there win total from last season (6-20, 2-14).  Like the Tars the Spartans are coming off  a holiday tournament that they hosted. UT was the champ in the Tampa classic knocking off Miles and Paine.
Da'Marko Foster leads the Spartans and is second in the SSC at 19 points a contest.  One other Spartan scores in double digits as well.  Anthony Griffis puts up 14.8 points a game.  Vincent Cornu averages 8.6 points and 6.3 rebounds a game.  Jon Riles is the top assist man in the SSC at 5.4 a night.  The Spartans have knocked off Southeastern, Shaw and Palm Beach Atlantic who were all common opponents they had with the Tars.

Meet The 2012-13 Rollins College Tars!

2012-13 Rollins Tars Player Profiles:
Starters:
Kyle McClanahan (#3)
guard
Maitland,Fla. (Winter Park High School)
6-1 185
graduate student

McClanahan played on a limited basis for Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators in the 2010-11 season before transferring to Rollins. The Florida transfer and Winter Park native played in eight games for the Gators in the 2010-11 season.  In eight games McClanahan played 2.8 minutes a games and averaged 0.9 points per contest.
This season McClanahan leads the Tars in scoring at 14.2 points a game headed into conference action. He has also averaged 5.1 assists and 5.3 rebounds a game.
"Expectations are very high this season, especially with my boy K-Mac doing work."
said fellow Winter Park alum Kyle Schenider.

Pete's take: McClanahan is the Tars "glue guy." As K Mac goes, so go the Tars.

Mitch Woods (#22)
guard
Naples,Fla. (Community School of Naples)
6-3 210
junior

Woods is a transfer from Appalachian State.  He averaged 2.1 points a game in the 2011-12 season.
Woods  is off to a solid start to his Rollins career.  He averages 9.1 points a game and has been deadly from the 3-point line, shooting 58 percent (11-19).
Teammate Adam Allen summed up Woods game the best:
"Mitch is really good at getting out on the break and making plays in transition.  He is also a knockdown shooter when left open and a very good slasher in the half court offense."

Pete's take: Woods is a great shooter and can score from just about anywhere on the floor.

Jeff Dirkin (#5)
forward
Oak Park, Illinois (Oak Park High School)
6-8 210
red shirt sophomore

Dirkin was one of three sophomores who saw significant minutes last season.  Dirkin played in 27 games (five starts) as a freshman.  He averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds a season ago.  Those numbers have taken a significant jump in the 2012-13 season, as Dirkin has averaged 5.1 points and 4.7 rebounds thru the first 10 games in 2012.

Pete's take: Dirkin very well could be the most improved Tar from his freshman to his sophomore season (red shirting really paid off).

Brett Chance (#15)
guard/forward
Winter Park,Fla. (Lake Howell High School)
6-2 190
senior

Chance has battled thru injuries much of his Rollins career after transferring from Canisius.  Chance has had a solid season thus far averaging 10.8 points a game.  This includes shooting 41 percent from the 3-point line.
Adam Allen had some solid things to say about Chance:
" Brett Chance has a knack for scoring and is a very good shooter when he can get to a spot and rise up.  He also impacts the game with his passing and leading the break."

Pete's take: Chance has had a solid career and looks to finish his senior year without injuries which have plagued him much of his career. When healthy, he is a dynamite scorer and a force to be reckoned with.

Dave Diakite (#42)
forward
Washington D.C. (National Christian Academy)
6-6 215
senior

Diakite is the second leading scorer for this season's Tars putting up 13.4 points a night. The UCF transfer has unbelievable athleticism and has had some highlight reel dunks (one last season that made the top ten on Sports center).
Allen had this to say about Diakite's game:
"Dave is one of the best athletes you will ever see play the game. His athleticism makes him a good rebounder and a one man fast break. He has a scorer's mindset, so when he gets it going offensively he can "light it up".

Pete's take: A great athlete and the man who will probably determine how good this team ultimately is.

Bench:
Corey Goedde (#4)
Guard
6-1 180
Cincinnati,OH (Glen Este High School)
redshirt freshman

Goedde will see some action this season after redshirting a year ago.
On what he learned redshirting last season:
" When we are working together as a team was when we were the most successful. You can't ever take a night off, you always have to play your hardest (on what he learned from last season's team.")

Pete's take: Goedde will not play a lot, but is one of the hardest workers on this team.

Trip McFall (#10)
Guard
Indianapolis,Indiana (North Central High School)
6-3 195
sophomore

McFall also redshirted last season.  He played in 27 games his freshman season, scoring 1.5 points a game and shooting 35 percent from the 3-point line.  McFall has averaged 1.6 points a game in seven games this year.

Pete's take: McFall is a solid shooter and can be a contributor off the Tars bench.

James Ferell (#11)
guard
Winter Park,Fla, (Winter Park High School)
6-0 175
freshman

Ferell is one of three Tars (McClanahan and Schneider also) from Winter Park High School.  He is averaging 2.2 points a game thus far this season.

Pete's tale: Ferrell will need to take advantage of playing time when he gets it, as this team has a lot of depth at the guard position.  He has not yet paid his dues and probably will not see a whole lot of action this season.

Kyle Schneider (#14)
guard
Winter Park,Fla. (Winter Park High School)
5-10 180
junior

Schneider continues to have an injury riddled career. On his knee injury, Schneider said:
" My knee is not fully healed yet.  I still have a lot of pain and am not able to go full contact yet."
On the expectations for the season:
"The expectations this season are very high.  We all have a positive attitude and expect to make a run deep into March, especially with my boy K Mac doing work this season."

Pete's take: Unfortunately for Schneider it could be another lost season due to the knee injury.

Chris Uhle (#24)
center/forward
Ocala,Fla. (Trinity Catholic High School)
6-11 245
sophomore

Uhle has been very good in his second season as a Tar.  He has averaged 4.6 points a game, coming off the bench in all ten contests. Uhle has more than doubled his scoring average from last season.  He is tied for the team lead in blocked shots and is shooting 36 percent from the 3-point line.

Pete's take: Uhle can flat out shoot, as evidenced by his 36 percent clip from the 3-point line and the fact that he has made all eight free throws he has attempted this season.  Leave him open and most of the time he will knock the shot down.  Also a good shot blocker.

Scott Schuette (#33)
guard
Lexington,Ky. (Lexington Catholic)
6-3 190
sophomore

Last year's experience should really help Schuette in his sophomore season. His numbers are down a little from last season.  After averaging 5.1 points a game last season, his average has dropped to 3.3 in the 2012-13 season.  After shooting 33 percent from the 3-point line last season, Schuette is shooting just 23 percent from the 3-point line and 33 percent from the field on the year.

Pete's take: Schuette is a very good shooter, but has not found his stroke yet in the 2012-13 season.  Whether he can or not will be a big factor in if the Tars will compete for the conference title this year.

Lukas Winegarner (#35)

forward
Soderjtale,Sweden (Igeltavikens High School)
6-9 215
junior

Winegarner is another solid shooter and provides the Tars with some size off the bench.  He is a transfer from Radford.  Winegarner played in 28 games and averaged 2.8 points a game at Radford last season.  This season he has averaged 3.1 points a game in a little over ten minutes a contest.  He is shooting 33 percent from the field and 27 percent from the 3-point line.

Pete's take: Winegarner has been solid this season, although he has not shot the ball particularly well.  He has hit some big shots and made some big plays already this season though.

Adam Allen (#40)
forward
Milton,Fla. (Milton High School)
6-8 222
graduate student

Allen is another of the DI transfers.  He is a big key to this team, as he is going to be relied upon as the scorer off the bench.  His DI experience should help.

Pete's take: Very good scorer off the Tars bench.  One thing to look out for with Allen is he does have a bum knee and will not be able to play in a lot of back to backs throughout the season.

Bridger Dawson (#55)
center
Aspen,Colorado (Aspen High School)
6-8 220
freshman

Dawson has averaged 0.4 points a game in seven contests with the Tars this season.

Pete's take: Dawson will not see much action this season, but he will need to learn a thing or two from the likes of Uhle, Allen and Winegarner.  He could be a solid big man who contributes next season.
