Tars Shake Off Rust, Panthers Thursday.

On a night when the Rollins College Tars played in front of a sparse crowd due to winter break and had to provide some energy by some highlight reel dunks the Tars knocked off Claiflin 65-56. First the Tars had to shake off some rust, after playing for the first time in 15 days at Warden Arena.
The Tars (6-4)  were led by a balanced attack. Mitch Woods led the Tars with 14 points to go along with a season high nine assists.  Scott Schuette had three big 3-pointers and tallied 11 points.  Alex Blessig added 10 points and six assists. The Tars also got eight points each from Chris Uhle and Jeff Dirkin. Dirkin also grabbed eight rebounds.  Uhle also added four blocked shots. The Tars shot 56 percent from the field on the game (24-43.) They also shot 55 percent (11-20) from the 3-point line in the contest.  They shot just 60 percent (6-10) at the foul line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 34-29. The Tars had 18 assists and 11 turnovers.  The win was the fifth straight for Rollins after a 1-4 start.
The Panthers only had one player score in double figures. Montel Williams drained seven 3-pointers en route to a 23 point effort.  Marcelus Dunn added nine points and five rebounds. Brandon Curry added eight in the loss. Just like many teams have against the Tars this season, the Panthers struggled against the zone defense. Claiflin managed just 56 points on 35 percent shooting from the field.  They were 9- of 21 from the 3-point line with Williams accounting for 7 of 14. The Panters shot 47 percent (7-15) at the foul line. They had 15 assists and seven turnovers.
Neither team could find the basket in the early going. The Panthers would finally score the game's first basket at the 16:53 mark. The Tars would then run off the next seven points.  The Tars zone continued to stymie Claiflin and they would open up a 15 point lead (24-9) at the 6:46 mark of the opening half.  The Tars would stretch that lead out to 16 on a pair of ocassions but the Panters would get to within 11 just before the halftime buzzer. After a pair of missed free throws by Trip McFall with three second in the opening half, Adam Allen would tip one in at the buzzer to give the Tars a 13 point lead (36-23) at the break.
The first 6:15 of the second half would see the Tars stretch that lead to 20 (49-29) which was the biggest of the contest on a Uhle 3-pointer.  The Panthers would get to within eight (52-44) before a Schuette 3-pointer stretched the lead back to 11 at the 9:26 mark. The Panthers would get to within eight again on a Dunn 3-pointer, but Blessig would answer to give the Tars a 11 point lead (58-47) with 7:52 to go. The Tars would hang on down the stretch and secure the victory.
Rollins will take another long break as they will not play again until January 4th. The Tars will battle Tampa at the Bob Martinez Sports Center on that day. As always you can catch all the action on the Tars sports network and 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and round the world at RollinsSports.com

Tars Knock Off Lions in Conference Opener.

The Rollins College Tars scored a 74-68 win over the Saint Leo Lions in a thrilling Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams at Warden Arena. The game featured eight- ties -and 16- lead changes before the Tars came out on top.
Rollins improved to 5-4 with their fourth straight win after a 1-4 start.  Three Tars scored in double figures on the evening. Adam Allen had a career-high 21 points in 26 minutes. The grad student from Milton,Fla. was 8- of- 11- from the field (3- of- 5- from the 3-point line.) He also nailed his only two free throw attempts that "iced" the win for the Tars. Mitch Woods added 17 points, including eight in the final two minutes. Woods also had six rebounds- and- three- steals. Alex Blessig netted 13 points and also added four assists in 34 minutes.
The Tars shot 56 percent from the floor in this game, that included a 40- percent clip (8-20) from the 3-point line. The Tars struggled at the foul line where they shot 50 percent (8-of- 16.) The Tars had 16 assists- 10 turnovers- and- seven- steals.
Saint Leo fell for just the second time this season. The Lions record is now 8-2 and 0-1 in the SSC. They were led by Jerrel Harris who scored 24 points. The conference's leading scorer came in averaging 21.3 points a game, but was held to just eight in the second half Wednesday on 2- of- 9- shooting. Spencer Mitchell chipped in 11 for the Lions, while Chim Kadima netted 10 and grabbed six rebounds. The Lions shot 43 percent from the floor in this one. Leo shot 38 percent from the 3-point line.  They shot 67 percent at the free throw line and out rebounded the Tars 32-27. The Lions had 16 assists-12 turnovers- and six steals.
The Tars got off to a quick start and led 14-6 five minutes in capped by a Lukas Winegarner free throw. The Lions would counter with a 15-1 run as a Mitchell lay- in would give the Lions a six point lead. The Tars would battle back and a Allen lay up would give them the lead back 25-24 with 6:21 in the half. The Lions would regain the lead and take the two point lead into the locker room.
The second half began much the same way as the first did as Uhle and Blessig would get the Tars the lead back after two possessions. The next 12 minutes would feature four ties and eight lead changes.
A Blessig lay up would regain the lead for the Tars (63-62.) That would be short-lived as Devin Crisoto would give the Lions the lead back on a conventional 3-point play.
Woods would then come up huge for the home team. He would tie it at 65 with a lay-up and then a old fashioned 3-point play with 1:45 left gave the Tars a 68-65 lead. Cadima missed a potential game tying 3-pointer and then a Woods free throw would stretch the Tars lead to four. After a Lions turnover, Woods would score again to stretch the lead to six with 33 seconds left. Harris would nail a 3-pointer to cut the lead in half at the 27 second mark. Allen would then "ice it" for the Tars with a pair of free throws.
Rollins will take a break for final exams and will resume when they take on Claiflin December 19th at 7 PM. You can catch everything Rollins on the Tars sports network 91.5 WPRK and worldwide at Rollins Sports.com

On the chemistry of this team:
"We have great team chemistry- we have a great mix of veterans and new guys. Veterans do a great job of helping the new guys on and off the court.

Pete's take: Blessig is learning the offense and will continue to get better at learning it. He will be a big key to this team's success. Can not win if he does not perform well at the Point Guard position.

Is a sharpshooting big man who had a breakout sophomore season last year. Gives the Tars experience and versatility.

2012-13: He played in all 30 games- averaging 15 minutes a night. Posted 5.3 points- and 2.2- rebounds- a- game. Shot 41 percent from the field- 43 percent from the 3-point line- and made 90 percent of his free throws.

Fellow front court mate Jeff Dirkin had this to say about Uhle's game:
"Chris has been one of our more consistent players. He does a great job of staying on balance and with his high release he is really tough to stop."

Pete's take: Uhle will need to knock down open three's and will block several shots, as well as alter his share. One of the best strokes you will ever see from a man his size.

Jeff Dirkin (#5)
Forward
Oak Park,Ill. (Oak Park High School)
6- foot- 8, 210 lbs.
redshirt junior

Is in his fourth year with the program. He is a long and lanky big man. Is known for his long defensive ability and his hook shot. Has played in every Tars game the past two seasons.

Dirkin on his role on the offensive end:
" This year on the offensive end I am looking to hit the open 3-pointer, and score from the right block.

Pete's take: Dirkin will be one of the vocal leaders of this group. He has improved a great deal on offense since joining the program.

Adam Allen (#40)
forward
Milton,Fla. (Milton High School)
6- foot- 8, 222 lbs.

" I expect us to finish better than last year and challenge Southern for the conference title."

Allen has been playing college basketball since the 2007-08 season at the University of Florida. He had two medical redshirts and still has knee problems. He will not be able to play a lot of second nights of back to back's.
  About his knees Allen says:
" Knees have held up well so far. My focus will be to strengthen the muscles around my knee by doing yoga and rehab. Could only participate in 2-3 practices a week before the season started. Now that the season has begun the days i'm not practicing I will be conditioning in the pool and riding the stationary bike."
Allen added this comment.
" The biggest struggle for me this year will be staying in basketball playing shape without playing basketball on a daily basis."

Pete's take: You have to give Allen a ton of credit for sticking with hoops and fighting through all the knee problems. An emotional leader on this team and probably the team's best pure shooter.

Talking about Winegarner on the offensive end. Dirkin said:
" It's going to be very important for Lukas and myself to be able to handle the ball for 2-3 dribbles in our offense and be effective."

Pete's take: Winegarner will need to rebound well for this team. He will also need to continue to improve his ball handling skills on the offensive end.

Trip McFall (#10)
Guard
Indianapolis,Indiana (North Central High School)
6- foot- 3, 195 lbs.
redshirt junior

Is one of the team captain's and a team leader. Here are a couple of his teammates thoughts on Trip as a leader.
Blessig said:
" Trip is one of the reasons this team has such great team chemistry. They have a good mix of veterans and new guys. The veterans (such as Trip) do a great job of helping the new guys on and off the court."

Allen agreed:
" These guys have great team chemistry mostly led by Trip, Mitch and myself. They have made a point to organize team events and include the younger guys in the social scenes."

Bernal weighed in on McFall as a leader:
"Team captain. Emotional leader. Will play spot minutes off the bench. Shooting is his best asset."
Alen reflected back on McFall's season as a redshirt:
" Trip redshirted and he furthered his knowledge of the offense and learned how to help the guys understand there roles."

McFall played in 17 games last year averaging 7.9 minutes a game. Scored 13 points on the season. Has nine assists- and- six- steals- on the year.
2011-12: redshirt

redshirt sopomore

Pete's take: Will play hard and give team quality minutes when on the floor. Will need to spell Blessig every once in a while.  Very good passer. Won two state championships while at Winter Park High.

Shariff  Almula (#0)
guard/forward
Orlando,Fla. (Timber Creek High School)
6 foot 3, 175 lbs.
sophomore
Transfer from Shenandoah University

Bernal on Almula:
" Versatile guard who can also play the wing. Four year varsity player at Timber Creek. Can shoot it decently and his length will be useful in some of the Tars various zone schemes."

Pete's take: One of the new players that could be a key for the Tars by mid- season.

Joey Galvis (#32)
Guard
Tampa,Fla. (Tampa Jesuit High School)
6- foot- 1- 165 lbs.
freshman

Is a shifty guard who gives the team perimeter depth. Won a high school state championship last season.
 Blessig on Galvis:
" He is a great character guy who works hard each day. He shoots the ball very well and makes the extra pass when needed.

Bernal on Galvis:
"A walk- on guard that is an above average shooter. Tars looking to bring him along."

Allen on Galvis:
" Joey is a knockdown shooter. Joey has a good feel for the game, but with the depth to compete with guys like Schuette and MCFall minutes will be hard to come by.

Pete's take: A decent shooter who will have to "pay his dues" before he sees any floor time. Is stuck behind some of the more experienced shooters like Schuette and McFall.

Bridger Dawson (#55)
Center/Forward
Aspen,Co. (Aspen High School)
6- foot- 8, 220 lbs.
redshirt sophomore

2012-13- Played in 13 games. Had eight points- and- nine- rebounds for the season.

2011-12: Redshirted

Kyle Schneider (#14)
Winter Park,Fla. (Winter Park High School)
5- foot- 10, 180 lbs.
senior

Played in eight games in the 2010-11 season. Had 31 minutes played. Has battled injuries since. Was a medical redshirt in both the 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons.

Pete's take: Has had knee problems his entire career. If he can physically play will not see much floor time.

Redshirt:
Sam Phillipott (#31)
Guard/Forward
Noblesville,Indiana (Noblesville High School)
6- foot- 7- 200 lbs.
freshman

Blessig on Phillipott:
"He and Joey are characters that work hard each day." Their game is very good coming out of good high school competition. Both shoot the ball very well and make the extra pass when needed."

Allen on Phillipott:
" Sam is a knock down shooter. Sam has no conscious and a quick release that allows him to get his shot off before the defense gets out to him. If Sam can understand the offense he will find some playing time."

Pete's take: You can always find playing time for shooters. Obviously Phillipott needs to learn the offense a little better, and he will learn it this year from the bench as a redshirt.

Tars Rip Tarzans Tuesday.

The Rollins Tars evened their season record at 4-4 with a 102-45 pasting of Puerto Rico Mayaguez at Warden Arena Tuesday afternoon.  The Tars hardly looked like the same team that started out the season at 1-4 and has had a hard time scoring all season long.
The win was the third straight for the Tars and completed a stretch of four games in five days with a record of 3-1. The lone loss being a hard-fought 70-59 loss to South Carolina Aiken in the Saint Leo Classic. The Tars were led by five players in double figures Tuesday. Alex Blessig nailed five 3-pointer's en route to a career high 20 points. Jeff Dirkin continued a solid stretch of late. Dirkin scored 13 points- grabbed six rebounds- and added to his team leading total with a pair of steals. Scott Schuette hit 4 of 5 3-pointer's to tally 12 points. The 12 points was Schuette's season high.   Lukas Winegarner and Mitch Woods added 10 points each. The Tars got 41 points off the bench and everyone played and scored for the home team in this one. Rollins shot the ball extremely well from the field. The Tars shot at a 54 percent clip (37-68) from the field and had the best shooting night of the season from the 3-point line. They hit 51 percent (18-35) from the 3-point line.
Mayaguez fell to 0-8 on the season. The Tarzans did not have a player score in double figures. Gabriel Garcia and Patrick Morales led the Tarzans with seven points each.
The game was close for the first five minutes. Then the Tars opened up a 10 point lead (23-13) at the 11 minute mark of the opening half. A Dirkin slam with 7:15 to go would give Rollins a 16 point lead (31-15). They would out score the Tarzans 15-3 the rest of the opening half and would have a commanding 46-18 lead at the intermission.
The Tars would push the advantage to 30 on a Dirkin tip in on the first possession of the opening half. The Tars would stretch the lead to 43 with 10 minutes to play. The lead would grow to 50 (84-34) at the 7:57 mark. Joey Galvis would get into the act and give the Tars a 57 point lead in the game's final minute and that would be the final margin. The 57 point win was the Tars largest margin of victory since 1983.
The Tars held the Tarzans to 28 percent shooting from the field and just 20 percent (5-25) from the 3-point line. The Tarzans were just 40 percent (4-10) at the free throw line. The Tarzans had just nine assists and 24 turnovers.
The Tars shot 77 percent at the foul line (10-13.) They out rebounded the Tarzans 44-39.  The Tars had 26 assists and 15 turnovers. Rollins had 14 steals on the day. Woods led the way with three.
Rollins will take a well deserved week off before they open conference play with a 7 PM tilt against Saint Leo at Warden Arena on December 4th. As always you can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK and round the world at RollinsSports.com

Tars Size Too Much For Vaqueros.

The Rollins College Tars got a career high 16 points from Lukas Winegarner and won a second straight. This one a 65-49 win against an undersized Puerto Rico-Bayamon.
The Tars improved to 3-4 on the season with the victory. Winegarner was 3-of-5 from the field, hit his only 3-point attempt- and was 9- of 9- at the foul line. The transfer from Radford also had five rebounds  and  blocked two shots. Winegarner was the only Tar in double figures Monday. Adam Allen added nine points and Chris Uhle had eight. The Vaqueros won the rebounding battle 26-24. They had nine assists and turned the ball over 19 times.
Both teams started out hot in the early going. The Tars would lead 23-15 midway thru the first half as Winegarner would make four straight free throws. The rest of the half would be played fairly evenly and the Tars would lead 35-25 at the break. Bayamon cut that deficit to six early in the second half, but that is as close as they would get. The Tars would cruise to a second straight victory.
Rollins will be back in action Tuesday when they play for the fourth time in five days. The opponent Tuesday will be Puerto Rico Mayaguez. Tip time is set for 3 PM. You can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and worldwide at RollinsSports.com

They were not going to let a second half lead slip away for the second day in a row.

A Tale of Two Halves. Tars Doomed by Lackluster Second Half in Loss To Aiken.

The Rollins College Tars looked like a completely different team in the first half on Friday night in the opening round of the Saint Leo Classic than the team that struggled in a overtime loss to the Warner Royals. The Tars, facing the 18th ranked Panthers of South Carolina Aiken led 37-30 at the half. Then a combination of a solid second half with swarming defense by Aiken  and a Tars team that could not find the bottom of the net, had too many unforced turnovers and missed a couple front ends of one and one's led to a 70-59 defeat at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
Aiken improved to 5-1 on the season and collected  there fifth straight win. They were led by three players in double figures. Kinley Branch led the Pacers with 14 points, Paul Larsen added 13, while Ronald Zimmerman chipped in 11. Devontae Wright added seven points and eight assists, including a pair of back-breaking 3-pointer's. The Pacers shot 54.5 percent (24-44) on the game. They shot 42 percent (8-19) from the 3-point line. This included five of 11 from the 3-point line in the second half. The Pacers shot at a 61 percent clip (14-23) from the foul line. They had 20 assists and 13 turnovers.
The Tars dropped to 1-4 on the year. They were led by a pair of players in double figures. Mitch Woods led the way with 19 points, and Adam Allen netted 14. Woods was just 5-16 from the floor, but made all seven free throw attempts. Allen scored all 14 of his points in the first half, he missed all five of his shot attempts in the second half. The Tars shot 30.8 percent (16-52) from the field. They were a frigid 22 percent (6-27) in the second half. The Tars shot 23 percent (5-21) from the 3-point line. They were a "ice cold" one of 11 from the 3-point line in the second half. Rollins shot 75.9 percent (22-29) from the free throw line. Each team collected 33 rebounds. The Tars had 10 assists and 15 turnovers. Nine of those 15 miscues were in the second half. The Aiken bench outscored the Tars 28-5 on the game.
The game started with the Pacers scoring the first five points. The Tars would respond and run off the next 13 and led 13-5 on a pair of Blessig free throws at the 14:50 mark. The Tars would stretch that lead to nine on three different occasions, the last being a 24-15 lead at the 9:50 mark after a Allen lay up. The Pacers would then cut the lead to three  three different times before the Tars would stretch it back out to seven  (37-30) at the break.
The Pacers would come out in the second half and a Wright 3-pointer would cut the Tar lead to four, before Woods would answer with a three of his own. Wright's second three would cut it back to four again (40-36) at the 17:23 mark. The Tars 43-36 lead would become a 48-45 Pacer lead after a 12-2 Pacer run. A Paul Larsen lay up would make it 55-47 Aiken with just over seven minutes to play. Mitch Woods would make two free throws at the 4:20 mark to cut it to six (59-53) but that's as close as the Tars would get.

Deja Vu. Warner nips Tars (Again!)

For the second consecutive season the Warner Royals came into Warden Arena and stole a early season win from the Rollins Tars. This time it was a 66-64 overtime win for the Royals.
Former Rollins assistant Shawn Hanrahan brought his undersized group in ready to play. Hanrahan who was an assistant back when the Tars went all the way into the elite eight in 2004 brought in a team that did not have a player taller than six foot six. He often played with a small lineup that did not have a player over six foot two in the group.
The Tars (1-3) raced out to a 27-12 lead in the game's first ten minutes and looked to be cruising to a second straight win. Then the ball stopped moving, the 3-pointer's kept missing and the Tars had themselves a problem. At the half, it would be 30-21 Tars.
The Royals (2-3)would come out in the second half and would battle back to take a 40-38 lead on a Rice three with 11:04 to go.  It would go back and forth for the next several minutes. The Tars would go on a 7-0 run and lead 45-40 with six minutes left.  Adam Allen would bank in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Tars a 51-48 lead, only to see Warner answer with a three of their own to tie it.  A left handed runner by Blessig would give the Tars a 53-51 advantage with 1:23 to go. After a Tanner Connor lay up would tie it at 53. The Tars would regain the lead on a Dirkin three. The Royals would answer with a deep three that would tie it with 37 second left. The Tars would have a chance to win it in regulation but Mitch Woods' seventeen footer would be off the mark and the game would head into OT.
The Royals would take command late in OT. They would lead by five  with less than a minute to go. The Tars would have one last push. After  a Chris Uhle three with 55  seconds left  would cut the Royals lead to  two. Rice would hit a huge bucket that extended the Royals lead and looked to put the game away with 27 seconds. The Tars would see Uhle miss a three, but the ball went out of bounds to the Tars down four with 19 seconds left. A corner three by Dirkin would not fall, Blessig would hit there runner with the left hand with five seconds to cut the lead to two. On the ensuing inbounds the Tars would get the steal only to see Dirkin miss the layup as time expired.
Alex Blessig led the Tars with a career high 14 points. He also added nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Adam Allen chipped in 14 points to go along with eight boards. Chris Uhle and Mitch Woods netted nine each. Uhle also had 11 rebounds. The Tars shot 37 percent from the field in the evening. They could not find the range from the 3-point line hitting 24 percent (9-37.) The Tars out rebounded Warner 46-37 and had 18 assists to go with 12 turnovers.  They were just 5-11 at the foul line.
The Royals were led by Jason Pospichal. He had a game high 22 points off the bench, making six of 13 from the 3-point line. Mitch Rice added sixteen and Lartero Shaw chipped in 10. Warner shot 39 percent from the floor. They were 11-30 from the 3-point line. That included a 50 percent clip (7-14) in the second half. The Royals shot 79 percent at the foul line (11-14.) They had 18 assists and 14 turnovers.
The Tars will be back in action Friday and Saturday. They will head to the Saint Leo tournament where they will face sixth ranked South Carolina Aiken Friday at 5 PM. Then they will face Virginia Union Saturday at 2 PM. As always you can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK and worldwide at RollinsSports.com

Led by a hot shooting Allen, the Tars jumped out to a 19-7 lead midway thru the opening half. The Sailifish briefly got the lead into single digits before a barrage of three's led by Mitch Woods gave the Tars a 21 point lead (40-19) with 2:53 left in the half. The Sailfish would then score the last 12 points of the half to cut the Tars deficit to nine (40-31) at the intermission.
PBA would get the lead down to seven early in the second half, but then Woods would nail a pair of 3-pointer's to stretch the lead to 11 (50-39.) The Tars would then make another run and a put back jam by Lukas Winegarner would make it 63-45 Rollins. The Sailfish would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.  Rollins would avoid there first 0-3 start since the 1983-84 season.
Rollins will take a week off and will host the Warner Royals on Tuesday. As always you can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK and worldwide at RollinsSports.TV. with Jim "Shooter" Ferro" and Robert Seagull. Tip time next Tuesday is set for 7 PM.

Southern Holds Off Tars late.

The Rollins College Tars fell to 19-10 after a gut-wrenching 72-66 loss to Florida Southern in the SSC Championship game at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. The win gave the Moccasins the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II South Regional and all but assured the Mocs will be the host school.
The Tars led nearly the entire game until a 3-pointer by Tyler Kelly with 7.1 seconds left proved to be the game winner. The Tars had a chance to win it but a highly contested Diakite shot went wide right with 1.1 second to go. The Mocs tacked on five of six free throws to account for the final score as Diakite was hit with a pair of technical fouls in the waning seconds.
Brett Chance had a huge day for the Tars scoring a team high 22 points on eight of 12 shooting, including six of nine from the 3-point line.  Kyle McClanahan added 14 points and three assists, while Diakite netted 11 points to go along with 12 rebounds.
Both McClanahan and Diakite were named to the All Tournament time after the game.
Seth Evans lead all scorers with 26 points including six three's and was named the Tournament MVP. Brett Bailey chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, while Cameron Vines put up 11 points to go along with six rebounds.
Rollins shot 50 percent from the field and the 3-point line (12-24.) The Mocs shot 40 percent from the floor and hit 13-34 3 pointer's.
The Tars won the rebounding battle 33-30. FSC forced 20 Tars turnovers while having just 11 of their own.
The Tars came out with all the energy and led 20-4 after the game's first 10 minutes. As all good teams do the Mocs would have an answer and a Evans three would spark a 20-2 Mocs run that would give Southern a 24-22 lead. Chance would run off the next eight points and give the Tars the lead back. A pair of dunks by Capers would get FSC within five with 3:33 in the half. The Tars would that lead to seven (37-30) at the break.
The Tars would get off to a hot start in the second half and open up a 13 point lead (48-35) with 15:21 to go. The Tars would maintain a lead until the Mocs would get it down to a three point game (59-56) with 6:41 left. The Mocs would have the lead for the first time at the 4:34 mark(63-62.) The Mocs would add a free throw before a McClanahan bucket tied it and Mitch Woods would give the Tars a 66-64 lead with a lay up at the 1:53 mark. The Mocs would score the game's last eight points.
The Tars will await there fate when the NCAA pairings are released at 10 PM on Sunday night.

Tars Stun Saint Leo! Face Southern Sunday.

The Rollins College Tars (19-9) held Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year Marcus Ruh to just two points and dominated on the defensive end for the second straight day in a 62-53 upset of top seeded Saint Leo in the SSC Semifinals at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee,Fla.
Mitch Woods led the Tars attack with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Chris Uhle was big from the 3-point line for the Tars, hitting four of eight en route to his 13 points. Kyle McClanahan added 12 points, while Dave Diakite netted 11 points to go along with nine rebounds in the victory for the Tars that highly boosted there tournament resume.
Saint Leo fell to 21-7 on the year.  The co-SSC champions with Florida Southern were led by a 21 point effort from Trent Thomas. Jerrel Harris chipped in 11 for the Lions.
The Tars shot 40 percent (17-42) from the field on the day. The Lions shot 32 percent (18-55 from the field) and went 10-36 from three.
Rollins won the rebounding battle 36-28.
In the previous two meetings (both won by St.Leo) the Tars found themselves in a early hole and could not dig out of it. Saturday it was the Tars that got off to the quick start and behind a pair of Uhle 3-pointers took  a 16-6 lead midway thru the opening half.
Leo would answer with a 12-0 run and take a 18-16 lead two minutes later. The lead would change hands three more times and the game would be knotted at 26 at halftime.
Leo would take advantage of a cold shooting Tars team to begin the second half and open up a six point lead (34-28.) The Tars missed six straight attempts from the floor to begin the half. The Tars would answer right back as a Scott Schuette three would cap a 14-3 run that gave the Tars a 42-37 lead with 9:46 remaining.
Saint Leo would get it down to a one possession game on a pair of occasions but the Tars defense would get big stops in both situations. The next two minutes saw the Tars continue to play stifling defense and stretch the lead to 11. The huge win for Rollins all but assured them a spot in the NCAA South Regional, but they can take the league's automatic bid with a win over second seeded Florida Southern on Sunday. The Tars have made 10 trips to the championship game, winning four. The last being a 75-65 win over Eckerd in the finals two years ago. The Tars have lost both meeting to Florida Southern this season.

Seeking A Little Payback.

The Rollins College Tars (17-6 9-4 SSC) look to get a little revenge on Saturday afternoon when they host Sunshine State Conference leader Saint Leo in a 4 PM showdown inside the Alfond Sports Center's Warden Arena. The Tars suffered the only road loss of the season when they were crushed by Saint Leo 79-54 on January 26th. After nine and a half minutes the Lions led 27-2 and never looked back.
The Tars come in riding a two game win streak. The zone defense that has been a Tom Klusman staple in his 33 seasons at Rollins has been a big reason why. In the last two victories the Tars have allowed just 47 points a contest. Rollins comes in ranked fifth in the first South region standings that were released on Wednesday. Rollins was a 52-45 winner over Lynn and a 56-48 winner over Nova Southeastern in the last two contests.
Kyle McClanahan leads the way for the Tars on the season scoring 14.9 points a game, he is second in the conference in field goal percentage (57 percent), third in assists (4.6 a game) and eighth in steals (1.7 a game.) Dave Diakite is second on the team at 13.4 points a game and is seventh in the league in rebounding at 6.5 boards a contest. Adam Allen is scoring 10.2 a game as the team's third leading scorer.
The Tars are fourth in the league on offense at 71.7 points a game and are second on the defensive end, giving up just 64.9 a night. The Tars  lead the SSC shooting at a 47 percent clip from the field. Rollins is 8-5 at home on the season, including 3-3 in conference play. The Tars only road loss of the season was to Saint Leo.
Saint Leo comes into Saturday as the conference leader. They have a half game lead on Florida Southern, with the Tars a game and a half back. The Lions are 19-5 overall and 11-3 in the SSC. They have the lead in the conference on the strength of a season sweep of Florida Southern. The Lions last outing was a 62-59 win over Tampa. Marcus Ruh leads the Lions and is fourth in the SSC averaging 16.6 points a game. Ruh has been deadly from the 3-point line on the season, where he is shooting at a 49 percent clip which is good for the top spot in the league. Jerrel Harris puts up 13.8 points a night, while Trent Thomas scores 13.5 a contest. The Lions have the top defense in the league, as they allow
62.5 points a game on the defensive end. The Lions are seventh on offense (69.9 a game.)

The second half would start the same way the first did, as this time it would be Dave Diakite who buried the three to give the Tars a 32-19 lead. The lead would be as many as 14 (41-27) before the Sharks would make a run to cut it to 46-39 at the 7:23 mark. That would be as close as the Sharks would get the rest of the way.  The Tars have now won seven of the past eight versus NSU.
