Rebounding Is Key As Tars Roll Past Panthers Saturday.

The Rollins College Tars knew going into Saturday's matchup with Virginia Union that rebounding would be key. The Panthers averaged 13 offensive rebounds a game as a team. The Tars responded to the challenge Saturday. Not only rebounding very well but correcting a lot of the mistakes that they made in the second half of Friday's loss to South Carolina Aiken. They were not going to let a second half lead slip away for the second day in a row.
The Tars (2-4)  out rebounded the Panthers 37-29 in the 77-59 win in the second day of the Saint Leo Classic at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.  The Tars led "wire to wire" in this one. They held the Panthers to just one offensive rebound in the opening half. Jeff Dirkin had a career high 14 rebounds. The Tars had three players score in double figures on the afternoon. Mitch Woods scored 14 points and added a team high six assists. Chris Uhle netted a career high with 14 points, to go along with five rebounds. Alex Blessig added 13 points to go along with four assists. Lukas Winegarner added nine points off the bench and Adam Allen had all eight of his points in the second half. The Tars shot 50 percent (23-46) from the field. They were 33 percent (8-24) from the 3-point line. The Tars shot 74 percent (23-31) at the foul line. That included 17-18 in the second half. Rollins had 18 assists and 13 turnovers.
The Panthers (1-5) were led by 20 points from Omar Briggs to go along with seven rebounds. Ray Anderson added 15. The Panthers shot 35.3 percent (18-51) from the field. They were just 1-10 from the 3-point line on the afternoon. Virginia Union shot 66.7 percent (22-33) at the foul line. They had just six assists on 18 made baskets and turned the ball over 12 times.
The Tars jumped out to a 5-0 lead early after a Uhle jumper and a Woods 3-pointer in the first three minutes of the game. The Tars would lead 27-19 at the half after controlling it most of the way.
The Tars would get a pair of big three's to start the second half. Adam Allen would bury a 3-pointer to put them up 10 (47-37) and then a Woods three would stretch the lead to 13. The Panthers would get as close as six with just under seven minutes to play but the Tars would cruise to the victory that snapped a brief two game losing skid.
The Tars will be back in Winter Park Monday when they host Puerto Rico- Bayamon at Warden Arena at 7 PM. You can catch all the action with Jim "Shooter" Ferro and Robert Seagull on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and round the world at RollinsSports.com
