Huge Rebounding Advantage Lifts Falcons Past Tars.

In a small miracle that you will not see for a long time the Rollins Tars held a 33-32 lead over the Seattle Pacific Falcons at the half at the Orleans Arena in the Dixie State Las Vegas Challenge.  The Tars led at the half despite being out rebounded 22-7 in the opening stanza. Unfortunately for the Tars they would not be able to maintain what was a hot shooting opening half and would fall 74-54 to the Falcons.
The Falcons (9-3) would win for the second time in as many days in Las Vegas. Wednesday night they were a 76-66 winner over Dixie State.  Corey Hutson paced the Falcons with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting in the game. Brendan Carroll added 12- Matt Borton tallied 11- and- Mitch Penner posted a double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds.)  Riley Stockton (the nephew of John Stockton) tallied nine assists for the Falcons.  Seattle Pacific shot 49 percent for the game.  They shot 36 percent from the 3-point line.  The Falcons shot 87 percent (13-15) at the foul line.  Seattle Pacific hammered the Tars on the glass 41-13.  They had 21 assists and 15 turnovers.
The Tars (5-5) were led by Sharif Almulla and Jeff Dirkin with 13 points each.  Chris Uhle added 12 in the defeat.  Uhle was the only Tar with more than two rebounds (he had three.)  Rollins shot 48 percent from the field in the game.  They shot at a 55 percent clip (6-11) from the 3-point line.  The Tars struggled at the foul line. They shot 57 percent (4-7.)  The Tars had 13 assists and nine turnovers.
It would be Rollins who would begin the game with the first five points.  SPU would quickly erase that with a seven point run to take the lead.  After a Dirkin jam would tie the game at seven the Falcons would go on another five point run to go up 12-7 at the 13:42 mark on a Penner 3-pointer.  Rollins would answer with the next seven capped off by a pair of Scott Schuette free throws.  The game would be tied eight times before halftime the last time at 30 on a Almulla 3-pointer at the 1:44 mark. SPU would briefly take a two point lead before a Almulla 3-pointer right before the half would give Rollins a 33-32 lead at the break.
The Tars shot 50 percent (12-24) in the opening half.  They were a sizzling 63 percent (5-8) from the 3-point line. Almulla was 3-of 3 from 3-point range.  Assistant coach Kyle Frakes in the post game show called it the best half of basketball Rollins played thus far this season.
The next 20 minutes Rollins would learn why the Falcons are a perennial power. Including being DII runner up and a regional finalist a year ago.  Jeff Merton would convert a conventional 3-point play 29 seconds into the second half and the Tars would hold a four point lead (36-32.)
SPU would run off the next nine points to take a 41-36 lead early in the second half.  The Falcons would never look back after opening up a double digit lead at the 13:35 mark.  The Tars would get within six a pair of times but SPU would ride the big second half to the victory.
The Tars will be off for Christmas break and will be back in action January 2nd when they host Palm Beach Atlantic at Warden Arena.

Rollins Edges Saint Martin's.

Maybe it's because the trip is right after finals. Perhaps the players feel less pressure with no school at the time. For whatever reason the Rollins Tars love playing in Las Vegas. This year is no exception. Playing for the first time in 13 days Rollins was a 73-67 winner over Saint Martin's in the Las Vegas Dixie Challenge at the Orleans Arena.
The Tars (5-4 0-1 SSC) were led by four players in double figures on the night.  Jeff Dirkin scored 13 points on 5- of- 8 shooting for the game.  Scott Schuette also had 13 to go along with five assists in 35 minutes of action.  The senior from Lexington Catholic was 5- of-14 in the victory.  Alex Blessig just missed a double-double as well. The transfer from Florida Gulf Coast scored 12 points and dished out nine assists.  Mike Bedulskis provided a spark for the Tars when they needed it most. Scoring 11 of Rollins first 12 points to start the second half.
Rollins shot 45 percent from the floor on the night.  They shot 32 percent (8-25) from the 3-point line.  They shot 63 percent (15-24) from the free throw line.  After coming into the game at - 5.1 rebounds per contest the Tars and Saints each gathered 38 rebounds.  The Tars had 19 assists and turned the ball over 12 times.
Saint Martin's (3-7) had three players score in double- double.  The Saints were led by a double-double (18 points and 14 rebounds) from Tyler Idowu.  Tyler Copp scored 16- and- Trey Ingram netted 10 in the loss.
The Saints shot 37 percent from the floor for the game. They shot 31 percent (8-26) from the 3-point line.  The Saints shot 94 percent (15-16) from the free throw line.  They had 13 assists and 12 turnovers.
Both teams would come out having trouble scoring but it would be the Tars who would score the game's first seven points after the first five minutes.  After a pair of Idowu free throws the Tars would jump out to a 11 point lead (13-2) after a Schuette lay up.   The Tar lead would remain at 12 (20-8) after a Schuette jumper at the 7:54 mark of the opening half.  The Saints would battle back and cut the lead to two (28-26) after a Isaac Bianchini 3-pointer at the 1:16 mark.  Sam Phillpott would convert a big 3-point play giving the Tars a five point lead at the half (31-26.)
The Saints would score the first four points of the half and cut the Rollins lead to one (31-30.)  After a pair of Bedulskis free throws a Will Bond 3-pointer would knot the game at 33.  The Tars would then grab a pair of five point leads. The last being at 40-35 (all by Bedulskis.)  The Saints would not go away though. A 7-0 run capped by another Bond 3-pointer would make it 42-40 at the 10:50 mark.  At the 9:43 mark the Saints would take what was the largest lead of the game (46-42.)  Rollins would bounce back and take the 47-46 lead after a big Blessig 3-pointer. at the 8:29 mark.  After the game was knotted at 48 the Tars would score the next five. It would be 53-48 after a Schuette layup at the 6:50 mark.  Once again Saint Martin's would fight back. Copp would hit a pair of free throws to give the Saints a one point lead (57-56) with 3:41 to go.  Dirkin would give the Tars the lead back on a 3-pointer at the 3:05 mark (60-57.)  A pair of free throws would get the Saints to within one at the 2:57 mark but that is as close as they would get. The Tars would lead by as many as nine before securing the 73-67 win.
Rollins will be right back at it Thursday. The Tars will battle the Falcons of Seattle Pacific at the Orleans Arena. Tip time is set for 5:30 PM. You can catch all the action on the Geico Tars Sports Network at 91.5 FM WPRK and worldwide at RollinsSports.com

A Look Around The SSC. Florida Southern College

As part of the off season, I will be giving everyone a look at all the schools in the Sunshine State Conference. This month's feature school will be the SSC regular season and tournament champion Moccasins of Florida Southern College. The Mocs were the host school in the South regional this season but were upset by eight seed Tuskegee in the opening round.
Florida Southern College (formally knows as Florida Southern, Southern or FSC) is a private college located in Lakeland,Florida. The school is the home of the world's largest single site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture.  The Princeton review selected FSC as the most beautiful campus in the country in both 2011 and 2012. The Mocs have won national titles in NCAA Division II competition in baseball, golf, swimming, and basketball. The Mocs official colors are scarlet and white.
FSC was founded as a South Florida Institute in Orlando,Florida in 1856 and moved to nearby Leesburg in 1885 under the sponsorship of the United Methodist Church and was open to both male and female students. It moved to Sumerland (now Palm Harbor in 1901) and changed it's name to Southern College in 1906. Due to the fires of the early 1920's it was temporarily relocated to Clearwater Beach and then to Lakeland in 1922. In 1935 it was renamed Florida Southern College by the board of trustees.
Florida Southern College has over 2,319 students and 50 undergraduate majors in a variety of disciplines and offers both Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science Degrees. At the graduate level, the school offers masters degrees in Business Administration, teaching, Masters of Education and Masters of Science in Nursing.
Florida Southern's athletic teams are known as the Moccasins, often shortened to Mocs. Prior to 1926 they were known as the Southerners. The official colors are scarlet and white, although athletes sport red, white, and blue uniforms. FSC is a DII school that participates in the Sunshine State Conference except for woman's lacrosse (Independent.) The Mocs have won 27 DII championships, 12 in Men's Golf, nine in baseball, Four in Woman's golf, and one each in Men's Basketball and Woman's Softball. The Mocs most recent championship was in May 2010 when the men's golf team won it's 12th title.

Ten Things Tars 2013-14.

The Rollins Tars had a up and down 2013-14 basketball season. Here's a breakdown of the good and the bad.
The good:
1. The Tars rally for a 82-76 overtime win over then second ranked Florida Southern on January 29th. It was dubbed by Nate Weyant (Sports Information director) as an instant classic. Mitch Woods had a monster day and almost single handedly willed the Tars to the win.
2. Mitch Woods is named All Sunshine State Conference First Team. Woods led the Tars averaging 15.4 points a game on the year. This included 35 and 26 points in the two meeting with Florida Southern. Woods was joined on the All Conference Team by Yanio Barruetta (Barry,) Kevin Capers (Florida Southern,) Jerrel Harris (Saint Leo,) and Jermaine Jackson of Florida Tech. Capers was the Conference Player of the Year, while Corbin Jackson (Florida Tech) was Defensive Player Of The Year. Barrueta was the Newcomer Of The Year. Adrian Gonzalez (Barry) was the freshman of the year. Linc Darner of Florida Southern won Coach Of The Year.
3. The Tars sweep defending Conference Champion Saint Leo. The Lions are one of four SSC teams to make the NCAA Tournament South Regional. SSC regular season and tournament champion Florida Southern will be the top seed. The Mocs will host Tuskegee on 3/15 in Lakeland. #5 Tampa will face #4 North Alabama. #3 Delta State will take on #6 Barry. #2 Seed Saint Leo will face #7 West Alabama.
4. The Tars win four straight league games before falling to Florida Southern late in the season finale.
5. Alex Blessig averages double figures in his first season with the Tars after leaving Florida Gulf Coast.

The bad:
1. The Tars hit rock bottom when they lose 70-67 to Lynn on January 15th. This is the Fighting Knights only win in the first half of the SSC schedule.
2. Rollins gets off to a rocky 1-4 start. It is the worst start for the Tars in 10+years.
3.Lukas Winegarner goes down to a broken foot. A devastating injury to the Tars front court, and one of it's three seniors.
4. The Tars fall to Warner for the second straight year at Warden Arena.
5. The season comes to a close in large part due to poor foul shooting and 3-point shooting against Nova Southeastern. The Tars lose in overtime. As coach Klusman said:
"Not shooting 50 percent at the foul line and poor 3-point shooting were bugaboos they had all season."

Sharks Outlast Tars.

In the game of basketball especially in March it comes down to the little things. After trailing by 10 points with four minutes remaining and six with a minute to go the Tars made a furious rally to force overtime. Unfortunately for the fifth seeded Tars that would not translate into overtime as they would fall 75-71 to the Sharks of Nova Southeastern. Ultimately the game would come down to foul shooting in the extra session. The Sharks who were the best foul shooting team in the conference drained free throws when it counted. For the Tars Jeff Dirkin missed three of four free throws late.
Rollins season ended with a record of 14-13. The Tars had five players score in double figures. Jeff Dirkin led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes- Chris Uhle added 14 in 39 minutes of action. Alex Blessig also added 14 in the loss- Mitch Woods and Adam Allen each scored 10 points in what would be their final game as members of the Tars. Rollins shot 40 percent (28-70) on the night. They struggled from the 3-point line where they shot 28 percent (9-32.) The Tars were a costly 46 percent (6-13) at the foul line. They had 16 assists and seven turnovers.
The Sharks (13-16) also placed five players in double figures as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the SSC tournament to face Eckerd Friday at 5 PM in Kissimmee. Chris Page and Justin Jeangerard paced NSU with 18 points each- Jeangerard added 14 rebounds in the win. Stian Berg added 16- Maurice Fuller had 13- and Brian Cahill had 10 for NSU. The Sharks shot 41 percent (23-56) in the game. NSU shot 39 percent (15-39) from the 3-point line. The Sharks shot 70 percent (14-20) from the foul line on the night. NSU won the rebounding battle 44-40. They had 16 assists and 14 turnovers.
Rollins trailed by seven early but would battle back and knot the game at 15 midway thru the opening half. Five lead changes and two ties happened in the next 10 minutes before the Sharks would take a three point lead (31-28) at the half.
The Sharks were in command much of the second half and looked to have the game in hand leading by 10 (58-48) with 4:03 left. The Tars would not go quietly. A Dirkin put back would get the Tars within four (62-58) with 1:21 to go. A steal and bucket by Blessig would get the Tars within two (62-60) Blessig would nail a 3-pointer after the Sharks split a pair of free throws to tie it at 63. Rollins would have the last chance at the end of regulation but the Tars would have a pair of turnovers and the Sharks one in the waning seconds of regulation.
NSU would strike first in OT and lead by three. Uhle would nail a 3-pointer to knot the game at 70 with 2:38 in the extra session. The Tars would not make a field goal over the last 2:38 and the Sharks would win it at the stripe.
