Tars Stun Southern!

Often times in the game of basketball it is said that in a rivalry game the records can be thrown out the window. The Rollins Tars made sure that this was the case on Wednesday night at Warden Arena. The Tars came away with a stunning 82-76 win in overtime in front of the biggest crowd in 10 years at Warden Arena. After trailing by seven with 1:46 to go in regulation.
Rollins (9-9 3-5 SSC) was paced by a career high tying 26 points from Mitch Woods.  Woods was 10 of 11 at the foul line, including six of six in the OT.  Adam Allen came up with four big 3-pointer's in five attempts on his way to scoring 17.  Chris Uhle added 11 points, including what turned out to be the game winning 3-pointer in overtime.  Jeff Dirkin also had a solid game with eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Tars shot 53 percent (27-51) from the field.  They were on fire all night from the 3-point line where they shot 57 percent (12-21.)  Rollins shot at a 70 percent clip from the free throw line (16-23.)  Rollins had 14 assists and 15 turnovers.
The second ranked Moccasins (18-1 7-1 SSC) were led by a  23 point effort from Kevin Capers.  He was joined in double figures by Tyler Kelly with 17- and- Garrett Putman with 10.  Frank Adams also had a solid game with seven points and 11 rebounds.
The Tars got a 3-pointer from Uhle on the first trip of the game and would set the tone for the evening.  The Tars nationally ranked defense would get the better of the Mocs nationally ranked offense for the next 13 minutes.  Alex Blessig would nail a three to give Rollins a 18-17 lead with just under six minutes to go in the half.  The Mocs would then go on a 13-0 spurt to take a 12 point lead (30-18) with 3:35 in the half.  The Tars would answer with a 10-2 spurt capped by a Woods 3-pointer and would trail by four (32-28) at the intermission.
The Tars would come out with plenty of energy in the second half and a 3-pointer by Dirkin from the corner  would give them a one point lead (38-37.)   They would stretch that lead to four (47-43) with 13:19 left on the clock.
Both teams would go cold for the next four minutes and the Tars would stretch the lead to five (48-43) on a Trip McFall free throw at the 9:32 mark.  The Tars lead would be six (54-48) on a Scott Schuette 3-pointer at the 6:40 mark.
Once again the Mocs would respond with a 12-0 spurt and take a six point lead (60-54) with 4:26 to go. FSC would stretch the lead to seven (64-57) with 1:46 left but the Tars would scratch and claw there way back.
Dirkin would nail a 3-pointer and Woods would get a steal and dunk to cut the Mocs lead to two (64-62.) After a couple of defensive stops on each end the Tars would get a huge bucket from Alex Blessig to tie it with 15 seconds left and he would have a free throw to take the lead with 15 seconds. Blessig who shoots 90+ percent on the year at the line could not convert the free throw.  The Tars defense would force a long 3-pointer by Capers to force overtime.
FSC would once again jump out and take the lead in the OT but the Tars would battle back.  After a steal at one end of the court after checking back into the game Uhle would nail a 3-pointer that would prove to be the game winner with 45 seconds left.  Woods would stretch the lead to four (78-74) on a pair of free throws. The lead would be cut back to two on a Frank Adams hoop. The Tars would "ice it" with free throws late as many in the crowd of 1765 would storm the court as time expired.
FSC would shoot 40 percent (29-73) for the game. The Mocs shot just 24 percent (8-34) from the 3-point line. They also shot just 63 percent (10-16) at the free throw line.  FSC out rebounded the Tars 42-35.  They had 18 assists and 11 turnovers.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday at 4 PM when they take on St.Leo at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.  You can catch all the action on the Tars Sports network at RollinsSports.com and on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park.

Tars-Mocs Renew Heated Rivalry Wednesday.

The Rollins College Tars  (8-9 2-5 SSC) will renew there oldest standing rivalry when they host the Moccasins of Florida Southern at Warden Arena Wednesday night. The Tars will try and break a four game losing streak against Florida Southern. The Mocs won 72-66 over the Tars for the SSC title in the last meeting. Some of the faces have changed but expect the rivalry to be as heated as ever.
Rollins comes in having lost four of five but can erase a lot of frustration with a big win against FSC. The Tars are coming off a tough loss 79-77 to Barry on Saturday.  Jeff Dirkin had a career day on Saturday scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds. Adam Allen broke out of a recent shooting slump and put up 16. Mitch Woods added 13- and Alex Blessig also netted 13.
The Tars defense has been stout all season long. They are only giving up 63 points a night. On the other end the Tars are scoring just 67.5 a contest.
Woods paces the Tars at 13.3 points a night. He is joined in double figures  by Blessig at 10 a night.  Allen is putting up 9.1 a game.
The Mocs come in at 18-0 and 7-0 in the SSC and ranked second in the nation.  They are one of four remaining unbeatens in Division II.   The Mocs are well rested after not playing over the weekend.  The last time out they pulled off a thrilling 87-83 overtime win over Tampa.  Kevin Capers paced the Mocs with 26 in that contest.  Tyler Kelly added 17- while Lamar McKnight tallied a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
FSC's high flying offense comes into Wednesday averaging 90.2 points a game.  They have only been held under 80 twice this season.  The Mocs are giving up 76 a night on the defensive end.
Capers leads FSC in scoring at 18.8 points a game.  Dominic Lane comes in with a 14.1 average- while Stephen Battle nets 10.3 a night.

Miscues Doom Tars in Tight Home Loss.

The Rollins College Tars held a 45-38 lead at halftime at Warden Arena on Saturday. The next six minutes would be some of the worst basketball the Tars have played all season long. A 17-4 Barry run sparked by a full court trap that would force nine Tars turnovers in the first six minutes of the second half would play a big part. Ultimately the Tars would regroup but fall 79-77 at the Alfond Sports Center.
Barry would improve to 13-3 overall and 4-3 in the SSC with the win.  Four Buccaneers would score in double figures on the day.  Barry would shoot  63 percent (27-43) from the floor- they nailed 50 percent of there 3-point attempts (7-14.)  Barry shot 72 percent (18-25) at the foul line.  The Bucs would win the rebounding battle 26-22.  The Bucs would have 19 assists and 23 turnovers.  Maybe the biggest stat of the day would be the 33 points that the Bucs scored off 26 Tars turnovers.  Yunio Barrueta paced Barry with 25 points- Savad Garner added 13- while Arie Williams and Deric Hill netted 12 each.
The Tars fell to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the SSC with another tough loss. Four Tars scored in double figures. Jeff Dirkin paced the Tars with a career high 19 points to go along with six rebounds- Adam Allen netted 16 off the bench- Alex Blessig had another solid game with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists- leading scorer Mitch Woods added 13.  The Tars shot 60 percent from the field in the game (24-40.) They shot at a 53 percent clip (9-17) from the 3-point line.  Rollins shot 77 percent (20-26) from the foul line.  They had 16 assists and 26 turnovers. 18 of the 26 turnovers were made in the second half.
The game started highly contested in the first three minutes and the Bucs had a slight 10-9 edge after a Barrueta 3-pointer at the 16:55 mark.  The Tars would go on a 12-3 spurt over the next two and a half minutes and lead 21-13.  After a couple of spurts by both teams the Buccaneers would cut the deficit to one (29-28) on a Barrueta free throw at the 6:15 mark of the half.  Things would be played pretty evenly over the last 6:15 of the half but the Tars would take all the momentum into the locker room after a 3-pointer by Sharif Almulla would give Rollins a seven point halftime lead (45-38.)
The second half could not have started any worse for the home team. Soon the once seven point lead would disappear.  A pair of Hill free throws would make it 51-49 Barry with 14:39 to go.  Hill would make three free throws after a Almulla foul to cap off the six minutes of atrocious basketball and the Bucs would lead by seven (56-49.)
The Tars would show there resolve once again and go on a 11-0 run to lead by four (60-56) with 9:56 to go after a Woods old fashioned 3-point play.  The game would be tied a couple times and then the Tars would go back on top by four (68-64) on a pair of Scott Schuette free throws with 4:20 left in the contest.  Barry would counter and score the next seven points to take a 71-68 lead after a Barruetta 3-pointer at the 3:12 mark.  Allen would score the next four Tar points and they would regain the lead 72-71 with 1:24 to go after a pair of free throws.  Barruetta would score but then Woods would hit a pair of free throws to give the Tars the lead back with 1:04 to go.  A Barrueta lay up would put the Bucs back on top and the Tars would get the ball back. A controversial five second call would go against the Tars and result in a huge turnover with 19 seconds.  Barrueta would split a pair of free throws and the Bucs lead would be two (76-74.) The Tars would have another crucial turnover by Blessig with 12 seconds. Williams would hit a pair of free throws and it looked like the Bucs had the game locked up up four with 11 seconds.  Schuette hit a pair of free throws and the lead was down to two with seven seconds.  Williams split a pair of free throws so the Tars would have the ball down three (79-76) with six seconds to go.  Barry elected  to foul Allen. He made the first free throw. The second one was missed and the Tars would get the rebound. A Schuette 3-pointer from the corner would go off the side of the backboard but was touched by a Barry player. The Tars would have one last shot with 0.9 seconds but could not get a shot off and the Bucs would prevail 79-77.

Snapping The Skid.

On the surface a win against a team that you beat by 22 points to start the season is not that significant. For the Rollins College Tars this statement could not be more false.  This is why a 77-65 win over a much improved Palm Beach Atlantic team at Rubin Arena was a very big one for the Tars.  The win snapped a three game losing streak for the Tars. They avoided losing four straight for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
The Tars (8-8 overall 2-4 SSC) were led by solid efforts by several players. Mitch Woods led the team with 20 points-five assists and three steals.  Alex Blessig rebounded from a scoreless effort against Nova Southeastern Saturday with a monster effort. The transfer from Florida Gulf Coast netted 18 points- added eight assists- and- seven rebounds.  Chris Uhle got the team kick started with a pair of 3-pointer's in the opening minutes, he had 13 points- nine rebounds- and- four assists.  Jeff Dirkin chipped in 11 in the win.
Rollins shot 51 percent (25-49) from the floor in the game. They were solid from the 3-point line, as they shot 46 percent (12-26.) The Tars made good on 79 percent at the foul line (15-19.) The Tars had a slight edge on the boards 31-29. The Tars had 20 assists and 11 turnovers in this one.
The Sailfish (7-12) had three players score in double figures. Garret Tucker led the way with 13 points for PBA.  Evin Graham and Christian Martinez had 11 each.   The Sailfish shot 43 percent (21-49) from the floor. They were good on 39 percent (7-18) from the 3-point line. They shot 64 percent (16-25) at the free throw line. PBA had 12 assists and 13 turnovers.
Rollins got some bad news before this one even started. Lukas Winegarner will miss the rest of the season with a fractured fifth metatarsal  in his foot. Trip McFall is also out indefinitely with a wrist injury.
The Tars came out hot and behind a pair of Uhle 3-pointers would take a 11-2 lead in the first four minutes.  PBA would close the gap and cut the lead to three (23-20) at the six minute mark. The Tars would counter with a 8-0 run that would stretch the lead to 11 ((31-20) with 4:32 in the half. The Tars would take a 10 point lead (40-30) into the locker room.
The Tars and PBA would play even basketball for the first five minutes of the second half. Another Woods 3-pointer would give the Tars a 48-36 lead. The Sailfish would not go quietly. They would go on a 15-3 run to cut the deficit to two (53-51) at the 10:00 mark. Woods would spark another Tars run with a 3-ball, followed by a Blessig 3-pointer and a Dirkin lay-in to stretch the lead to 10 (63-53) with 6:12 to go. The Tars would not let the Sailfish any closer and got a much needed win.

Offensive Woes Haunt Tars in Loss At "Shark Tank."

Head coach Tom Klusman of the Rollins Tars felt maybe a little shake up in the starting lineup would help his team get back on track on offense. Scott Schuette got the start for Rollins in place of Adam Allen but a 9:50 drought at the end of the first half would underlie the Tars offensive woes and result in a 54-46 loss at the Don Taft University Center.
Nova Southeastern (6-10 3-2 SSC) would have a pair of players score double figures in Saturday's contest.  Brian Cahill led the Sharks with 16 points- while Chris Page netted 15.  NSU shot 36 percent (17-47) from the floor on the afternoon.  They shot just 30 percent (8-27) from the 3-point line.  NSU was a solid 71 percent (12-17) at the free throw line.  The Sharks dominated the rebounding battle 41-29.  They had 13 assists and 20 turnovers.
Rollins (7-8 2-4 SSC) was led by Mitch Woods.  The Tars top scorer rebounded from a four point performance on Wednesday to score 14 points and added six steals.  Chris Uhle had a solid game with nine points- five assists- four rebounds- and- four steals.  Sharif Almulla also had a solid game with eight.   The Tars shot 30 percent from the field in the game. They shot 23 percent (8-35) from the 3-point line.  Rollins shot 67 percent (6-9) at the foul line.  The Tars had 14 assists and 18 turnovers.
The Tars got off to a good start and would lead by six (9-3) after a Schuette 3-pointer early on.  The rest of the half would see the Tars score just six points and not make a field goal for the final 9:50.  The Tars were not able to take advantage of 12 NSU turnovers, as the Tars would only score 14 points off 20 Sharks turnovers in the game.  It would be NSU who had a eight point lead (23-15) at the half.
The Tars came out of the locker room red hot in the first four minutes of the second stanza.  Uhle would hit a pair of 3-pointer's, Schuette would drain a three and Almulla would give the Tars a 27-25 lead with a three of his own with 15 minutes to go.
The Sharks would counter and take a six point lead (37-31.) Woods would score the game's next five points and the Sharks lead would be trimmed to one (37-36.) NSU would once again counter with a 10-2 spurt that would give them a eight point lead (46-38) with under three minutes to play.  The Tars would get to within five (51-46) with 40 seconds left but Cahill would nail a pair of free throws and the Sharks would finish off the win.
Rollins will conclude a three game road trip when they head out of conference to play Palm Beach Atlantic Wednesday. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM at Rubin Arena.  You can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and round the world at RollinsSports.com

Late Rally Pushes Knights Past Tars Wednesday.

In a game that the Rollins Tars led for most of the way, it was a atrocious night at the free throw line (9-20 for 45 percent) and a sub par night on the boards (36-28) that would cost Rollins in a 70-67 loss to the Fighting Knights of Lynn at the Count and Countess D'Hoernle Sport and Cultural Center . Both teams sit at 7-7 on the season after Wednesday's game.  The Knights improve to 1-3 on the season in conference play, while the Tars drop to 2-3 in the league.

Lynn had 16 assists and 12 turnovers.
Rollins led for much of the first half. Adam Allen got them off to a quick start and they lead the entire way except for a brief 16-16 tie.  It would be 30-29 Tars after a Blessig bucket right before the intermission. That would be the Rollins lead at the break.
The Tars would stretch that lead to as many as seven (41-34) with just over 14 minutes to go before Lynn would go on a 8-0 run to give the Knights the lead.  The game would see-saw back and forth.  After a Clyburn 3-pointer the game would be tied at 55. The Tars would regain the lead (57-55) on a Dirkin stick back with 4:24 left.  Josh Soto would hit a three to spark a 7-0 Fighting Knights run that would give them a five point lead (62-57) with 30 seconds left. A Schuette 3-pointer would cut the lead to two (62-60) The Knights looked to have the game warped up leading 67-62 before another Schuette 3-pointer would again cut the lead to two (67-65).  Soto would split a pair and the Tars would have a chance down three (68-65) but would not be able to retain possession after a turnover on a pass that looked to be tipped.  After a brief discussion the ball would be given to the Knights and they would inbound to Clyburn whose two free throws would "ice it."
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they head to the "Shark tank" to take on Nova Southeastern. Tip time is set for 4 PM.

Scott Schuette was a perfect six of six from the floor, including a trio of three pointers to account for his 15 points (including what proved to be the game winner.) Lukas Winegarner had his first career double-double (10 points and 13 rebounds) in the win. The Tars shot 51 percent (26-51) from the field on the evening. The Spartans who came into the game losing the rebounding battle on the season drubbed the Tars 35-23 on the boards. The Spartans had 19 assists and 19 turnovers.

The Tars would make one last push, as a Schuette 3-pointer would cut the Tampa lead to 11 (64-53) at the 3:37 mark but that would not be barely enough.
