The Rollins College Tars (6-4 1-0 SSC) will be in action for the first time in more than two weeks when they battle the University of Tampa at the Bob Martinez Sports Center at 4 PM Saturday. The Tars hope to have a better start than they did the last time out, despite another long lay off.
After a sluggish 1-4 start, the Tars have reeled off five consecutive wins to improve to 6-4. The last time out for Rollins was a win over Claiflin. The Tars have used a stifling zone to spark the streak. They are second nationally allowing just 59.4 points a game. The Tars have not allowed a team to break the 70 point plateau and have held teams under 60 points in five contests. Opponents are shooting just 39 percent- while the Tars are among the best (second in the conference) with 9.7 steals per game and third in blocked shots (5.5 per game.)
The Tars are ninth in the conference on the offensive end, scoring 68.9 points a game. The Tars top scorers are Mitch Woods at 12.3 points a game, and Adam Allen scoring 11.2 a night. Jeff Dirkin leads the front court, averaging 6.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks a game. The Tars also have two of the top ten players in assists. Alex Blessig is seventh in the conference at 3.5a night. Mitch Woods is tallying 3.3 assists a game.
Tampa (7-3 0-1 SSC) comes into the contest eight in the conference averaging 70.3 points a game. The Spartans have been solid on the defensive end. They are third in the conference allowing 64.4 points a game.
Jordan Davis leads the Spartans posting 13.4 points a game and he is third in the SSC in assists (7.2 a night.) Eric Moraes puts up 11.0 points a game and is sixth in the league in rebounding at 7.6 a night.
Richard Shmidt and Tom Klusman are two of the best coaches at any level. Shmidt is in his 31st season at UT and has a record of 628-318. While Klusman is in his 34th year at Rollins and carries a record of 615-345.
