Hot Shooting First Half Not Enough As Rollins Falls In SSC Quarterfinals

The Rollins College Tars shot 71.4 percent from the field and 68.8 percent (11-16) from the 3-point line in the first half against Nova Southeastern at Rick Case Arena inside the Don Taft University Center. Against a lot of teams that would be good enough but when you play against the #1 team in the county you have to be nearly perfect. Rollins despite that hot shooting still trailed 55-52  at halftime. They would ultimately fall 104-91. With the loss Rollins season ends at 13-16 on the year. Nova Southeastern advances to the SSC Semifinals where they will host #4 Barry who knocked off #5 Tampa on Tuesday night in Miami.

Ricky Ghedini got Rollins on the board before six straight Sharks points. Jah Nze would nail a triple to knot the game at 6. After a Jaxson Nap trey NSU led 16-10. The Sharks would open up a double digit lead halfway through the first half. Down 34-23 at the 8:57 mark Rollins would get a spark off the bench as Michael Niemann would go on a personal 12-0 run as he knocked down four triples to give the Tars a 35-34 lead with 6:41 until halftime. NSU took a brief five point lead but Rollins would battle back and tie the game at 44 on a Jah Nze jumper with 2:24 in the opening stanza. After NSU again took the lead Nze would knot the game at 50 on his three with 48 seconds in the half. It would be a 55-52 lead for NSU at the half. NSU shot 58.3 percent in the first half, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line, and 88.9 percent (8-9) at the free throw line.

Rollins came out of the locker room and regained the lead 62-61 on Nze's layup at the 16:55 mark. The next seven points would go the Sharks way. Trailing by six Michael Kalina would hit a triple of his own at the 11:25 mark and Rollins trailed 75-72. Before you knew it NSU led by double digits again (84-74) after Eli Allen scored with 7:54 on the clock. The lead grew to 16 and stayed in double digits until a last push by the Tars got them within nine on a pair of occasions. NSU would close it out late to advance to the SSC Semifinals and beat Rollins for the third time this season. Nze paced Rollins with 22 points, Ghedini had 17, and Niemann knocked down five triples to get his 15 points. The Tars shot 58.6 percent from the field, 48.3 percent (14-29) from the 3-point line, and 64.3 percent (9-14) at the free throw line. Rollins had 17 assists and 18 turnovers in the contest.

NSU was paced by Ross Reeves with 32 points, Nap added 19, Allen tallied 15, Bennett Kayser chipped in 12, while Dallas  Graziani scored 11 to go with 12 assists.  NSU shot 55.9 percent from the field, 34.6 percent (9-26) from the 3-point line, and 73.1 percent (19-26) from the free throw line. The Sharks won the rebounding battle 31-30. They had 22 assists and five turnovers in the contest.

#8 Seed Rollins Set to Meet #1 Nova Southeastern For The Third Time in SSC Quarterfinal on Tuesday

The Rollins College Tars (13-15 7-13 SSC) were not sure that they had done enough to qualify for the SSC tournament when they ended the regular season on Wednesday against Nova Southeastern. Three scenarios had to happen that determined the Tars fate. First Palm Beach Atlantic had to beat Tampa, that was never in doubt. Then Rollins needed Lynn to beat Florida Tech which they did. The final piece of the puzzle, Rollins needed Barry to beat Eckerd and that is exactly what happened. By virtue of a win against Florida Southern earlier in the season (the third seed in the tournament) Rollins won the tiebreaker over Eckerd. Ironically since that win over the Mocs, Rollins has lost five straight. You can catch all the action of the SSC Quarterfinal from Rick Case Arena (3/3) on 91.5 FM WPRK and round the world on RollinsSports.com with Jim "Shooter" Ferro on the call. Tip time is slated for 7:30 PM.

Last time out Rollins lost 75-69 to these very same Sharks. NSU scored the games final seven points to secure the win. Jah Nze led three Tars in double figures with 14 points while both Cheo James and Ryan Renfro tallied 11. Rollins shot 43.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (18-24) at the free throw line in the loss. In the first meeting on 1/10 Rollins lost to then #3 Nova Southeastern 91-73. Ricky Ghedini scored 16, Omar Figueroa had 15, and Jackson Gaffney scored 11. Since that meeting both Figueroa and Gaffney have been lost to injury by the Tars. Rollins scores 81.5 points per game (8th SSC) while they give up 76.6 points per contest (2nd SSC.) They shoot 46.7 percent from the floor (5th SSC) and 35 percent from the 3-point line (6th SSC.) The 74 percent that they shoot from the free throw line is good for 4th in the SSC. Rollins is -2.21 in turnover margin (8th SSC) and +1.20 in assist to turnover ratio (5th SSC.) They also dish out an SSC 5th best 16.68 assists per night. On defense the Tars are fourth in field goal percentage defense in the conference (44.2 percent) as well as 4th at guarding the 3-point line (32.2 percent.) On the glass Rollins gets seven (38.6-31.6) more rebounds than the opposition. They block 2.7 shots per game (9th SSC) and get 7.14 steals per game (8th SSC.) Nze (17.7 points per game for 6th SSC) and Figueroa (16.6 points per game good for 8th SSC) are leading the team in scoring. Ghedini and Matus Malovec share the team lead in rebounds per game with 5.0 per contest while Figueroa is shooting 46.9 percent from the field (9th SSC,) 42.4 percent from the 3-point line (3rd SSC,) 79.3 percent from the free throw line (10th SSC,) 2.8 triples per night (4th SSC,) 2.9 assists per game which leads the team, a 1.8 assist to turnover ratio (10th SSC,) 1.7 steals per game (5th SSC,) and 31.4 minutes played per game (8th SSC.) Renfro blocks a team leading 0.8 shots per game, and Nze gets 1.5 steals per game (8th SSC.)

NSU has won 100 straight games at home and come in with a 24-1 record and 19-1 in the SSC. They are the top team in the country and have won 18 straight. The latest victim was Florida Southern by a score of 92-73 on Saturday. Ross Reeves led five Sharks in double figures with 24 points, Dallas Graziani had 19 to go with six assists, Jaxon Nap netted 16, Ryan Davis added 15 to go with 10 rebounds, while Eli Allen scored 10 to go with 10 rebounds. In the first meeting with Rollins in January Graziani and Reeves each had 23, Bobby Rosenberger scored 14, and Nap added 10. The Sharks shot 49.2 percent from the field, 35 percent from the 3-point line (7-20) and 74.3 percent (26-35) from the free throw line in the 18 point win. The Sharks shot 39.7 percent from the field, 14.3 percent (4-28) from the 3-point line, and 65 percent (13-20) at the free throw line. They lead the country in turnover margin (+10.3) and assist to turnover ratio (2.08.) They also lead the SSC in assists (19.88 per night.) They are holding the opposition to 42.5 percent shooting from the field (2nd SSC) and 31.1 percent from the 3-point line (also 2nd SSC.) They are getting 5.7 (43.0-37.3) more rebounds than the opposition which is 4th in the SSC. They block 2.6 shots per game (10th SSC) and get 12.2 steals per game (4th SSC.) Reeves leads the SSC putting up 23 points per game which is seventh in the country, Graziani gets 20.3 points per game, Nap scores 13.9 per night, and Bennett Kayser rounds out the double digit scorers at 10 per contest. Nap grabs 8.2 rebounds per game which is 5th in the SSC, while Reeves and Graziani are 5th and 7th respectively in field goal percentage. Graziani leads the SSC with the 5th best assists number in the country (6.3 per night.) His 151 assists are 12th most in the nation. He also leads the SSC in assist to turnover ratio (3.3.) Tars Nearly Pull Off The Unthinkable In Loss To NSU.

The 2025-26 season had not gone anywhere close to according to plan going into Wednesday night. The Rollins College Tars had their backs against the wall trying to secure a spot in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. The opponent, #1 Nova Southeastern had won 98 straight games at Rick Case Arena before Wednesday. Rollins gave the Sharks all they could want, as they led 68-67 with 1:50 to go but the Sharks did what championship teams do, scoring the games final seven points to pick up the 75-69 win. With the loss Rollins regular season concludes at 13-15 and 7-13 in the SSC. NSU improves to 23-1 and 18-1 in the SSC with a 17th straight win.

NSU jumped all over the Tars early as they scored the games first 9 points. Rollins finally got on the board on a Mayson Quartlebaum layup at the 16:19 mark of the first half. A 10-0 Sharks run would stretch the lead to 17 early. It was 28-13 NSU before Michael Kalina made a triple to cut that lead to 12 (28-16) Rollins would continue to get contributions from unlikely sources as little used Cheo James knocked down a trey to make it a seven point game (33-26) with 7:42 in the first half. The lead was cut to five by Rollins but NSU stretched it to seven (43-36)  at halftime. Rollins shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (4-5) at the free throw line in the half. NSU shot 47.5 percent from the field, 15.4 percent (2-13) from the 3-point line, and 3-3 at the free throw line in the opening frame.

After a Dallas Graziani trey Rollins answered with a 5-0 run capped by a Ricky Ghedini triple to make it a 46-41 Rollins deficit with 19:10 to go. Rollins would continue to hang around and get to within three (57-54) on a pair of Mayson Quartlebaum free throws with 9:41 on the clock. Rollins battled back and tied the game at 63 on a Jah Nze layup with 4:23 to go. After the two teams traded scores the Tars took the lead as Ryan Renfro split a pair of free throws with 1:50 on the clock. After Jaxson Nap tied the game nine seconds later it was Graziani and Ross Reeves that would carry the Sharks to the finish line.

Rollins was paced by Nze with 14, while both James and Renfro had 11. Rollins shot 43.1 percent from. the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (18-24) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 43-38. They had 12 assists and 22 turnovers in the contest.

Graziani poured in a game high 35 points for the Sharks as he played all 40 minutes, Reeves added 14, and Ryan Davis netted 11. The Sharks shot 39.7 percent from the field, 14.3 percent (4-28) from the 3-point line, and 65 percent (13-20) at the free throw line. They had nine assists and nine turnovers in the contest.

Rollins still has a chance to make the Sunshine State Conference. With the remaining games on Saturday in the SSC, all of the following scenarios need to happen for the Tars to clinch the #8 seed in the SSC:

Rollins Looks To Shock The World @ #1 NSU

The Rollins College Tars (13-14 7-12 SSC) are hanging by a thread. The only way they could find a way into the Sunshine State Conference tournament  is by beating #1 Nova Southeastern (22-1 17-1 SSC) at Rick Case Arena on Wednesday night and then they would need some help. Not the most ideal situation for the Tars to say the least. You can catch all the action of the regular season finale on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and on RollinsSports.com with Jim "Shooter" Ferro on the call.

Defensive Miscues Put Tars In Precarious Position Heading Into The Final Two Regular Season Games.

This is not the position that the Rollins College Tars wanted to be in heading into the last week of the regular season. "It is very disappointing to be in this spot and have to work this hard just to make the conference tournament. Ultimately we just didn't get enough stops in the second half to give ourselves a chance to win this game," Rollins assistant coach Kyle Frakes explained after a 95-84 loss to Barry at Warden Arena on Wednesday night. With the loss Rollins falls to 13-13 and 7-11 in the SSC. Rollins is currently tied for 8th in the SSC with Eckerd (top eight teams in the SSC qualify for the tournament.) Barry improves to 14-11 and 9-8 in the SSC with the win.

Barry jumped out to a 12-6 lead before Omar Figueroa knocked down a triple to get the Tars within three (12-9) at the 14:04 mark of the first half. Rollins would tie the game at 14 on a Matus Malovec free throw with 12:13 until halftime. Barry would then run off the next five points. Rollins once again would battle back and knot the game at 30 on a Jah Nze layup with 5;18 in the first half. A Figueroa layup, a trey by Figueroa and a Nze layup would give Rollins a 37-34 lead with 3:36 in the opening frame. The two teams would trade the lead late in the half until Rollins would open up a five point (49-44) halftime lead after another Figueroa 3-ball late in the half. Rollins was led by Figueroa and Nze who each had 18 points in the first 20 minutes. The Tars shot 57.6 percent from the field, 38.4 percent (5-13) from the 3-point line, and 60 percent (6-10) at the free throw line in the opening half. Barry shot shot 59.2 percent from the field, 42.9 percent (6-14) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (6-9) from the free throw line in the first stanza.

The Bucs came out and scored the first seven points of the second half to regain the lead before Rollins tied it at 51 on a Nze layup at the 17:58 mark. Deon Perry hit a jumper and Ryan Van Eck a triple to give Barry a five point lead that they never gave back the rest of the way. Every time Rollins made a run in the second half Barry would have an answer.

Rollins shot 50.7 percent from the field, 26.9 percent (7-26) from the 3-point line, and 56.3 percent (9-16) at the free throw line. Late Game Woes Continue In Road Loss To Tampa

For the second straight game and the second time this week the Rollins College were in a tight see-saw affair. This one featured 18 ties and 21 lead changes. As has been the case for every road game but two this season, the Tars came up short in the end. This time a 88-81 decision against the University of Tampa at the Bob Martinez Center. With the loss Rollins falls to 13-12 and 7-10 in the SSC. Tampa improves to 13-10 and 7-9 in the SSC with the win.

It was a slow start for both teams as Jah Nze of Rollins had the only points ( a triple) in the first 1:51 of the contest. Rollins would take a four point lead (10-6) after a hoop by Omar Figueroa. Tampa would take the lead (13-12) on a pair of Ryan Blount free throws with 13:14 to go in the first half. After a three by BJ Schaeffer the Tampa lead was six (20-14) with 10:45 in the opening half. Rollins would battle back and knot the game at 26 after Nze nailed a trey with five minutes until halftime. The two teams would go back and forth the rest of the half but it was a quick 4-0 burst by the Spartans that put the home team on top 38-34 going into halftime. Rollins shot 48 percent from the field in the opening half, 23.1 percent (3-13) from the 3-point line, and 58.3 percent (7-12) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. UT shot 44 percent from the field, 23.1 percent (3-13) from the 3-point line, and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line in the games first 20 minutes.

Rollins battled back early in the second and retook the lead (45-44) on a Figueroa trey at the 16:10 mark. After Figueroa and Trey Lane traded triples the game was tied at 57 with 10:28 on the clock. After several minutes of back and forth action Figueroa calmly knocked down a pair of free throws to put Rollins up 73-72 with 5:09 to go. The next six points went to UT. Quartlebaum made a layup and was fouled. He converted the free throw at the 2:16 mark to get Rollins within two (78-76.) Tampa made enough free throws and got enough stops down the stretch to pick up the win.

Rollins was led by Nze and Quartlebaum who had 21 points each, Figueroa added 17, and Ricky Ghedini tallied 11. The Tars shot 50 percent from the field, 31 percent (9-29) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (24-30) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 31-26. Short- Handed Rollins Falters Late In Daytona

The Rollins College Tars came into Wednesday's night game at the ICI Center in Daytona Beach short-handed. Already without Jackson Gaffney due to an injury, Rollins was without second leading scorer Omar Figueroa with flu-like symptoms. Rollins battled all night and led 66-65 with 2:23 to go. They would not score the rest of the way and Embry-Riddle came away with the 71-66 win. With the loss Rollins falls to 13-11 and 7-9 in the SSC. ERAU improves to 11-11 and 8-7 in the SSC following the win.

The game was a see-saw battle that included 10 ties and 13 lead changes. Rollins was led by Jah Nze with 21 points while Ricky Ghedini netted 15. Rollins shot 42.1 percent from the field, 36.7 percent (11-30) from the 3-point line, and 63.6 percent (7-11) at the free throw line. The Tars had 14 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest.

ERAU was paced by Jared Berry with 23, Jack Klinger added 12, and Dawson Barr netted 10. ERAU shot 42.4 percent from the field, 30.4 percent (7-23) from the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (14-16) at the free throw line. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 43-26. They had 11 assists and 15 turnovers in the contest.

Rollins scored the games first four points on a basket by Nze and a layup by Ryan Renfro. After a Marshall Klug triple at the 14:05 mark of the first half it was a 12-4 Tars lead. Rollins still had a nine point lead (22-13) after Nze knocked down a trey with 8:30 in the opening half. A 9-0 Eagles run tied the game at 22 as Evan Montanari hit a 3-ball. That triple was answered by a Cheo James triple that made it 25-22 Rollins. After four straight Eagles points Matus Malovec knocked down a triple of his own to give Rollins a 28-26 lead with 3:54 until halftime. The two teams traded baskets until a triple by Montanari gave ERAU a 33-32 lead at the half. Rollins shot 46.4 percent in the first half, 42.9 percent (6-14) from the 3-point line, and 0-2 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. ERAU shot 41.4 percent from the field, 26.7 percent (4-15) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (5-6) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.

The two teams traded blows early in the second half as Nze hit a triple to knot the game at 42 with 15:35 to go. A quick 8-0 run by ERAU gave them an eight point lead. Rollins would battle back and take the lead 58-56 on Nze's triple at the 7:31 mark. The two teams were on the see-saw for the next several minutes. Rollins led 66-65 after two Nze free throws at the 2:23 mark. A couple costly turnovers and missed free throws cost the Tars late as ERAU would end the game on a 6-0 run to get the 71-66 win and split the season series with the Tars.

Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Tampa to take on the Spartans. Tip time is set for 4 PM.

Balanced Offense, Stifling Defense Lift Rollins To Rout Of Eckerd.

The Rollins College Tars came into Saturday with a bad taste in their mouth after a rough performance on Wednesday against Lynn. They left no doubt in this one as they routed Eckerd 90-65 at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Mayson Quartlebaum scored a season high 25 points, Omar Figueroa added 19, and Jah Nze tallied 15 in the win.

"What. a tail of two different teams," Rollins assistant coach Kyle Frakes said in the postgame show after defeating the team that they lost to by 26 points on the road in the first meeting and then came back to beat by 25 at home.

"How about Mayson Quarterlbaum tonight? His game is really starting to come along and I don't know a single person in our program who doesn't root for that kid after beating cancer," Frakes added.

Rollins (12-9 6-7 SSC) won for the third time in the past four games. The Tars shot 60 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent (7-21) from the 3-point line, and 56.5 percent (13-23) from the free throw line in the win.

Eckerd (10-10 4-9 SSC) got 14 points from Miguel Llompart, Timothy Thompson added 11, while both Jacob Davis and Caden Walton tallied 10. The Tritons shot 40 percent from the field, 21.7 percent (5-23) from the 3-point line, and 61.5 percent (16-26) from the free throw line.

Rollins jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead to start this one after a Jackson Gaffney triple at the 17:56 mark of the first half. The lead grew to 11 on a pair of occasions. After a layup by Quartlebaum at the 9:01 mark of the first half  Rollins had a 10 point lead (26-16.) Another Quartlebaum layup at the 2:51 mark of the half made the lead 16 (36-20.) Rollins would take a 16 point advantage (43-27) into the locker room. Eckerd shot 36 percent from the field, 15.4 percent from three (2-13) and 63.6 percent (7-11) at the free throw line in the first half.

The second half saw the Tritons provide some resistance early on but ultimately the Tars would cruise. After being within 13 (57-44) after a Llompart trey Rollins would go on the game deciding run. Over the next 7:37 Rollins would score 27 points to just 13 for Eckerd and the lead was 27 (84-57.) The win was punctuated by a breakaway dunk by Quartlebaum. The rebounding was all even at 34 for the two teams. Rollins had 22 assists and seven turnovers in the complete effort. Both Quartlebaum and Figueroa added three steals as well.

Eckerd had 12 assists and 14 turnovers in this one. They lost for the fourth straight time. Leading scorer on the season Wyatt Triestman was held scoreless on five field goal attempts.

Frakes said this about the defense on him:

"How about Matus (Malovec) today? He holds Eckerd's leading scorer scoreless. You look at the box score and see he was just 0-2 from the field. He was +21 in his minutes. If you asked him he would probably tell you he'd like to score 8-10 points but he has been so good for us," Frakes explained.

Rollins will be back in action on Wednesday when they head to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech at the Clemente Center. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
