Brown Could be Instrumental in Tars Tournament Run

Myk Brown has had some ups and downs in his Rollins College career. The 6 foot 4 Junior from Gainesville,Florida by way of VCU was the most outstanding player in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament as the Tars took the title a year ago. Tars fans are hoping for a repeat performance starting on Wednesday when the Tars open the 2011 Conference Tournament at home vs Barry. Barry is the team that the Tars defeated for the tournament title a season ago. The Tars were the regular season champs with a record of 22-6 overall and 13-3 in the SSC.
Brown had a game a season ago in the first meeting with Florida Southern last January where he exploded for 18 points in just 5 minutes. If this game proved anything it is that when he is hot Brown can be as good as anyone on offense. This season Brown is the third leading scorers for the 18th ranked Tars. He comes into the tournament averaging 13.1 points a game although he did miss a couple games with the lingering effects from a concussion. Brown is the second leading foul shooter in the SSC shooting at a 82 percent clip. Not bad for a guy who started playing organized basketball when he was in the seventh grade.
Brown went on to PK Yonge High School in Gainesville. Brown gives a lot of the credit to the coaching staff for his success.
"They put in a lot of time to help me improve my game and get to the next level" Brown said.
As for his role on the team at Rollins this is what he had to say.
"My role in the offense is to score and get other people involved. The Princeton offense (that the Tars run) involves everyone on the team. Everybody has to be on the same page" Brown added.
As for his role in the Tars zone defense this is what Brown had to add.
" In the zone defense I have to give all my energy and really try to pressure the ball and make the offense feel uncomfortable in order to be successful". "Brown said".
On a team that has a very solid crop of Seniors (Matt Robertson, Nick Wolf, Nikola Baran and Alex Castillo), it could be the two Juniors (Myk Brown and Ian Scott) who determine how far this team will ultimately go. It all starts Wednesday night at Warden Arena.

The Rollins College Tars (17-4 9-1 SSC) and Tampa Spartans (17-4 6-4 SSC) look to be two teams headed in opposite directions. The Tars 78-65 win was the 8th straight for Rollins. The loss for Tampa was their 4th in the past 5 contests after a 16-0 start.
Rollins used four double digit scorers and a solid bench effort to get the win at Warden Arena Wednesday. Nick Wolf continued his steak of consecutive games with 20 points as he hit the 20 point plateau for the 6th straight time. Wolf added 13 rebounds which made it five straight double-doubles for the Senior from Cincinnati. Matt Robertson tallied 16 points including a pair of big three's late. Ian Scott had 14 points including 8 of 8 at the charity stripe. The bench for the Tars was solid as well. Alex Castillo led the "bench bunch" with 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 26 minutes. Brett Chance went 3 of 3 for 6 points in 17 minutes. Chris Malcolm added 3 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in his 23 minutes. The Tar bench out scored Tampa's 21-6. The Spartans were 11-16 (69%) at the line and had 15 miscues.
The game started with Tampa jumping out to a early 9-2 lead. The Tars fought back though and would take there first lead at 20-19 on a Nick Wolf three point play. The lead would change hands 4 times until Tampa would take a 32-29 lead into the locker room.
The Spartans came out shooting in the second half. A pair of triples by Griffis made it 38-31 Spartans early in the second half. The Tars would once again fight back and tie the game on a pair of occasions at 39 and 46.  Rollins would then go on a 12-2 run and a Matt Robertson triple would put the Tars up 10 with 7:22 to go.
The Spartans would not go quietly. Fred Woods and Griffis would nail back to back treys and the Tar lead would whittle down to 1 with 3:14 to go. Castillo would make a free throw and a Ian Scott steal and bucket would put the Tars back in command. The Tars hit 11 of 12 free throws to ice the win.
A loss by Florida Southern to FIT in overtime gives the Tars a 2 game lead in the SSC standings with six to play. The Tars were ranked sixth in the South regional rankings that came out earlier Tuesday. Three other SSC teams look to be in line for a NCAA berth if things stay this way. #2 Tampa, #3 Florida Southern and #9 Eckerd join the Tars. All three were losers on Wednesday night.  Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they will face the Eckerd Tritons (15-5 6-4 SSC). Tip time is set for 4 PM at the McArthur Center.

Looking For Some Payback.

The Rollins College Tars (16-4 8-1 SSC) will look to continue their recent roll at Warden Arena on Wednesday. The Tars welcome 21st ranked Tampa to the Alfond Sports Center. The Tars lone loss in the SSC came back on January 2nd against the Spartans at the Bob Martinez Sports Center 86-80. Since then Rollins has run off 7 consecutive victories by an average margin of 11 points a game. The last was a 62-61 thriller at Nova Southeastern. Nick Wolf hit the game winning free throws with 8.5 seconds to go and the Tars survived a last second shot for the win.
The Tars have been "rock solid" of late. They come into Wednesday's contest with a 10-1 record at home, including 5-0 in conference play. The Tars have really picked it up at the defensive end during the streak. The Sharks of NSU came in averaging 84 points a contest but could only manage 61 on 35% shooting Saturday. The Tars score 77.8 points a night while allowing 69.3.  Three players continue to pace the Tars attack. Nick Wolf has had five straight games of 20 points or more and has four straight double-doubles. The Senior from Cincinnati is averaging 20.5 points a night to lead the SSC. He also averages 10.3 boards (2nd in the SSC). Wolf leads the SSC in minutes played at 36.2 a contest. Matt Robertson has come on strong in the last couple games with 14.7 a night. Myk Brown rounds out the Tars double digit scorers at 14 per contest. Brown tweaked his leg in the game vs NSU and was limited to just 2 points in 15 minutes.
Tampa comes in ranked 21st in DII. The Spartans have lost 3 of 4 after starting the season with 16 wins in a row. The Spartans are coming off a 59-52 loss to Barry at the Bob Martinez Sports Center saturday night. The Spartans are currently tied for for third in the SSC with Eckerd. Anthony Griffis (15.6 ppg) and Fred Woods (12.9) contribute double numbers for the Spartans. Tampa has the best defensive team in the SSC giving up just 67 points a night. They score 75.9 a contest. Tampa has been solid away from the Bob Martinez Sports Center (5-1). The key to this one could be Callum Townsend. Townsend is a sharp shooter who can be "hot and cold". He hit seven treys for a game high 21 points in the first meeting.
