The Rollins College Tars fell to 21-5 overall and 12-2 in the SSC as they fell to the Mocs of Florida Southern (19-7 10-4 SSC) 75-67 at Jenkins Field House Saturday.
The average fan would not know how intense this rivalry was until attending a game live. The meeting in Winter Park ended with a frustrated Rion Rayfield chucking the ball at Matt Robertson as time expired. Ian Scott was booed every time he touched the ball Saturday after he and Rayfeld had a skirmish in the first meeting.
The Tars shot 45% from the field but really struggled from beyond the arc. Rollins was just 3 of 18 from long range Saturday. The Tars won the rebounding battle 37-27 and hit 75% (18-24) from the foul line. Uncharacteristically the Tars had more turnovers (16) than assists (13). Three Tars players scored double figures Saturday. Nick Wolf led the way with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Myk Brown chipped in 11 points while Matt Robertson had 10 despite being in foul trouble most of the evening.
The Mocs improved to 19-7 and 10-4 in the SSC. Four Mocs scored in double digits Saturday. Terry Jenkins led the way with 20 points including five triples. Brett Bailey had 14 points, Rion Rayfield netted 13 and Brandon Jenkins chipped in 12 for the Mocs who kept their faint title hopes alive. FSC shot 41 percent from the field and 12-33 (36%) from three point land. The Mocs were a big 19-23 (83%) at the free throw line. They had 18 assists to go with just 10 turnovers.
The Tars will be back in action Wednesday. Once again they will seek the outright conference title when they travel to the Clemente Center at Florida Tech. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
