Rollins Staves Off Pesky Eagles.

The Rollins Tars held off a furious rally by Embry-Riddle in the last three minutes to hang on for a 97-93 win at Warden Arena on Saturday.  With the win Rollins improves to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. After the setback, ERAU falls to 11-8 on the year.
As he has all season long Jeff Merton led the way for the Tars.  The sophomore from Naples scored 22 points- Deion Clark had a solid game scoring 17- Sam Philpott scored 13- while Mike Bedulskis netted 12.
The Tars shot 58 percent (33-57) in the victory. This included a 43 percent (9-21) day from the 3-point line- after a rare off game at Tampa the Tars got back to what they have done at the free throw line shooting 85 percent (22-26.)  Rollins also had 27 assists in the game. One area that the Tars struggled on Saturday was the 16 turnovers that led to 30 Embry-Riddle points.  James Ferrell tied his career high with nine assists to go along with his seven points in the Tars third straight victory.  The Tars out rebounded ERAU 35-24 in this one.
Dalton Barnes had a monster second half and led all scorers with 31 points in this one for Embry-Riddle.  The Eagles also got 20 points from Ognjen Miljkovic- while Dillon Graham added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.
ERAU shot 51 percent (30-59) from the field in the loss.  They were very good from the 3-point line where they shot 47 percent (15-32.)  They also shot at a 82 percent clip (18-22) from the free throw line.  They had 19 assists and turned the ball over 12 times.  Although the 12 turnovers only cost them 13 points.
The game got off to a slow start for both teams as they went back and forth. It would not take long for the pace to quicken though. A 3-pointer by Clark would give the Tars a six point lead at the 13:14 mark of the opening half.  ERAU would take a brief lead, before Rollins would go on a 10-2 run to take a 31-25 lead at the 7:11 mark of the opening half.  Rollins would lead by double digits at the 1:16 mark but a tip in by the Eagles right before halftime would make the score 46-38 at the intermission.
The Tars would look to be in command for much of the second half. They led by as many as 14 with just over 10 minutes to go but the Eagles would not go away.  A slew of Rollins turnovers would make it interesting down the stretch, as the Eagles would get to within one at the 11 second mark.  The Tars would hit four free throws in the last 11 seconds, the latter being by Merton to stave off the comeback.
Rollins will jump right back into Sunshine State Conference action Wednesday when they head to Saint Pete to take on first place Eckerd.  Tip time is set for 7:30 PM. You can catch all the action on the Geico Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park.

Tars Look To Ground Eagles Saturday.

The Rollins Tars (13-6 6-3 SSC) aim for a third straight victory Saturday when they host the Eagles of Embry-Riddle University at Warden Arena. You can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and worldwide at RollinsSports.com on the Geico Tars Sports Network.
The Tars are coming off a hard fought 59-58 victory at Tampa the last time out. Joey Galvis continued his solid season, leading the way with 14 points- Sam Philpott was the only other Tar in double figures with 11.  Rollins also got nine points and five rebounds each from Alex Blessig and Jeff Merton as the Tars completed the season sweep of the Spartans. The Tars shot 43 percent from the field in this one- they had a rare tough night at the free throw line, where they shot 50 percent (11-22.)  Tampa shot 33 percent from the field (21-63-) and 29 percent from the 3-point line (11-38.)
The Tars go into Saturday averaging 83.4 points a night on the offensive end. They are second in the SSC behind first place Eckerd on the defensive end, as they are giving up 73.4 points a night.  The Tars are having a solid season shooting the ball, as evidenced by the 49 percent clip from the field- 38 percent from the 3-point line- and nearly 80 percent shooting from the free throw line.
Three Tars are averaging double figures on the season. Merton leads the way at 15 points a night- Sharif Almulla is scoring 13 a game- while Philpott has come on strong of late and is putting up 10.7 per contest.  Merton is leading the team in rebounding at 4.9 per contest.  The Tars were a 85-68 winner over ERAU in the first meeting in Daytona December 2nd.
Embry-Riddle fell to Palm Beach Atlantic the last time out. The loss was there fifth in six games.  The Eagles (11-7) lost 72-66 at Rubin Arena.  The Eagles shoot 36 percent (22 of 60) as a team- and- went five of 18 (28 percent) from the 3-point line in the defeat to PBA.
Three ERAU players scored in double figures in that game. Ognjen Milijkovic paced the Eagles with 16- Styler Hogan added a career high 13- and- Dalton Barnes rounded out the double digit scorers with 10.
Like Rollins the Eagles are having a big year on the offensive end where they are putting up 86 points a night- unlike the Tars the Eagles have not been good on the defensive end where they give up 81 a contest.  ERAU is shooting 45 percent as a team on the season, and they are out rebounding their opponents by more than six boards a contest.
ERAU has six players averaging double figures paced by Milijkovic at 16.8 a night- He also leads the team in rebounding at 7.2 a contest- Barnes is the team's next leading scorer at 14.4 a game- and Reed Ridder is also putting up solid numbers at 14.1 per game.

Tars Escape Tampa With Victory.

Maybe it was the lack of success in the past in the Bob Martinez Center. Maybe it was the reliable shooting strokes that eluded them. For whatever reason this game just felt like one that the Rollins Tars would not pull out in the end.  To tell you what a strange day it was inside the Martinez Center, a Rollins team that led the Sunshine State Conference and the country in free throw shooting coming in (at 81 percent) only made good on 50 percent of the trips they made to the line Saturday (11-22.) In the end though the Tars escape with a 59-58 win and a season sweep of the Spartans.
Rollins (13-6 6-3 SSC) was led by the pair of Joey Galvis (14 points) and Sam Philpott (11 points) off the bench.  Jeff Merton and Alex Blessig each scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds in the victory.  The Tars shot 43 percent (21-49) in the game.  They shot 40 percent (6-15) from the 3-point line.  The Tars did not fare well at the free throw line, where they shot 50 percent (11-22.)  The Tars edged the Spartans on the boards 40-36.  They had 11 assists and 15 turnovers.
Tampa (5-13 1-8 SSC) was led by 12 points by Austin Rettig.  Marcel Robinson would add 11, despite going just 3-14 from the field in the loss.  Rettig was 5-18, the two combined to go 5-19 from the 3-point line.  Tyler Zacur added nine.  Duke Shelton had seven points- eight rebounds- and blocked five shots. The cold shooting Spartans shot 33 percent (21-63) from the field- they shot 37 percent (11-38) from the 3-point line.  The Spartans also shot 50 percent (5-10) from the free throw line.  The Spartans had 14 assists and 12 turnovers.
The game got off to a slow start offensively for both teams. It would be tied at two five minutes in.  Tampa would take a brief 7-4 lead before the Tars would answer with seven straight.  A Jack Fleming 3-pointer at the 10:29 mark would cap off the 7-0 run and give the Tars a 11-7 lead.  The Spartans would score eight of the next nine to take a 15-12 lead on a Darren McClain 3-pointer at the 8:06 mark.  The Tars would then go on a 12 point run of their own to take a nine point lead (24-15) at the 3:35 mark.  Tampa would score seven of the last eight points of the half and the Tars would lead 25-21 at the intermission.
Bedulskis would nail his first 3-pointer of the season to give Rollins a seven point lead 38 seconds into the second half.  Tampa would counter once again and retake the lead 32-30 at the 16:20 mark.  The advantage would grow to four two minutes later.  The Tars would regain the lead after a 7-2 run (41-40) at the 11:42 mark.  The teams would trade baskets and the Spartans would have a one point advantage (47-46) at the halfway point of the second half.
The Spartans would extend the lead to four before the Tars would fight back to knot the game at 52 with 5:41 to go.  Tampa would regain a short lived three point lead before the Tars would get a personal five-point run by Blessig to take a 57-55 lead at the 2:03 mark.  The Tars lead would extend to four before a Marcel Robinson 3-pointer would cut it to one (59-58) with 40 seconds to go.  Tampa would get the last shot but Bacon's 3-point attempt was blocked by James Ferrell as time expired.
Rollins will be off until  Saturday January 30th when they host Embry Riddle.  Tip time is set for 4 PM at Warden Arena.  You can catch all the action on the Geico Tars Sports Network on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and worldwide at RollinsSports.com

Tampa has struggled for much of the campaign but are always hard to play (especially inside the Martinez Center.)  The Spartans are come off a 73-69 loss to Nova last time out. They did get their first conference win of the year the game before against Saint Leo.
In the game against NSU the Spartans were led by Austin Rettig with 25 points and five assists.  Tampa got a career high 11 assists from Matt Johnson in the defeat.  Pat Bacon also had a solid game, scoring 17 points and dishing out four assists.

The game started as a see-saw affair in the first five minutes.  The largest lead was three (9-6) by the Tars at the 15:33 mark.  The Mocs would have an answer though. They would go on a quick 9-2 spurt to take a four point lead (15-11) at the 13:30 minute mark.  The Tars would then cut it to two at the 11:17 mark after a pair of Eric Castaneda free throws.  The Mocs would stretch the lead out to eight at the 7:11 mark of the opening half. Rollins would then go on a 10-3 run to trim the lead to one (28-27) at the 4:35 mark.  The Tars would trail by four (37-33) at the intermission.

Sailfish Outlast Tars In a Wild One.

The Rollins Tars could not get the final defensive stop that they needed in the game's final 25 seconds and Michael Simpson's eighth  3-pointer of the day would prove to be the difference as PBA would outlast the Tars 88-86 in a wild one at Warden Arena. With the win PBA improved to 9-6 on the season. With the second heartbreaking defeat in it's past three contests the Tars would fall to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in the SSC.
Michael Simpson would nail eight 3-pointer's included the game winner for PBA en route to his game high 29 points- Malek Barber would chip in with 20- while Bakari Warthen would notch 14 points in the Sailfish victory.  PBA shot 50 percent (32-64) as a team. They went 13-29 (45 percent) from the 3-point line. The "Fish" shot 85 percent (11-13) from the free throw line.  They edged the Tars on the boards 35-33.  PBA had 21 assists and 13 turnovers.
Rollins was led by Sam Philpott with 16 points- Joey Galvis was the only other Tar in double figures with 13- a trio of players (James Ferrell, Deion Clark, and Jeff Merton) pitched in with nine. Merton also had seven assists, seven rebounds, and three steals. Galvis added four steals of his own.
Rollins shot 46 percent (29-57) as a team.  They shot 33 percent (9-27) from the 3-point line.  The Tars shot 77 percent (23-30) from the free throw line.  The Tars had 20 assists and turned the ball over just eight times in the defeat.
Mike Bedulskis would score a pair of baskets in the early going to account for the Tars first four minutes as the game would be tied at four at the 17:51 mark of the opening half.  The game would go back and forth for the next couple minutes as PBA would lead 9-8 at the under 16 media timeout.  The next four minutes would belong to the Tars as a Philpott dunk would spark a 10-4 run that would give them a 18-13 lead four minutes later.  The Sailfish would battle back again and tie the game again at 18.  Galvis would bury a pair of 3-pointer's to give the Tars a 24-20 edge at the 10:12 mark of the half.  PBA would get to within one (28-27) at the 6:27 mark of the halftime before a 7-2 Rollins spurt stretched the lead to seven (35-29) with 3:44 in the half.  The Tars would lead by as many as eight with just over a minute in the half but the Sailfish would get a four point play on a banked in 3-pointer after a bizarre sequence that saw the Tars receive a technical foul over a substitution. It would be 43-41 Rollins at the half.
The Sailfish would come out red hot in the opening stages of the second half. They would make 9 of the first 10 shots they took and turn a two point deficit into a 13 point advantage.  The Sailfish would lead by 10 (62-52) after what would be the fifth 3-pointer of the second half at the 15:32 mark.
The lead would grow to as many as 13 but the Tars would fight back. Philpott would score six of the 10 points in a 10-0 Rollins run that would trim the deficit to three (67-64) at the 11:01 mark.  The Sailfish would once again go on a spurt to gain a double digit advantage. This time it was 11 points (77-66) at the 6:58 mark. Merton's Career Night Propels Rollins Past Florida Tech.

Just call it home away from home. Having lost five of it's last six the Rollins Tars just needed a trip to a familiar place to pick up another victory. With a 89-74 win over Florida Tech at the Clemente Center on Wednesday night the Tars are now 3-0 on the home court of Florida Tech this season (they beat Paine and Clark-Atlanta there to start the season.)  With the win Rollins improved to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. Florida Tech fell to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the SSC.
Rollins was led by Jeff Merton, who scored 20 of his career high 28 points in the second half to pace the Tars- James Ferrell and Mike Bedulskis would add 14 points each.  Nine of the 11 Rollins players who saw action Wednesday scored.  The Tars shot the ball extremely well from everywhere on Wednesday night. They shot 59 percent (30-53) from the field- they shot 47 percent (8-17) from the 3-point line- as well as shooting 75 percent (21-28) from the free throw line.  The Tars would be even on the boards with a very good rebounding Florida Tech team (30 rebounds each.)  The Tars would have 19 assists and 14 turnovers.
The Panthers were led by 25 points from Corbin Jackson- he nearly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.  Jordan Majors netted 15 points- while Randy Echols would hit four 3-pointers en route to his 14 point night.  The Panthers shot 48 percent (27-56) from the field- they shot 41 percent (11-27) from the 3-point line- as they have all season long the Panthers struggled at the free throw line where they shot 56 percent (9-16.)  FIT had 17 assists and also turned it over 17 times.
Florida Tech would start out the game taking a six point lead (8-2) after a pair of 3-pointer's early.  FIT would lead by as many as 11 (23-12) midway thru the opening half.  Rollins would fight back and take a one point lead (32-31) at the 3:26 mark of the half after a Eric Castenada layup.  Rollins would carry a four point lead (40-36) into the intermission.
The second half would be tightly contested in the early going as well. The Tars would lead by three (47-44) four minutes into the half.  The next six minutes would see six lead changes as the Tars would have a one point lead with nine minutes to go.  Merton would then take over. The Naples native would score nine straight points and spark a 11-0 Rollins run that would give them a commanding 12 point lead (77-65) at the 6:41 mark.  FIT would get to within nine at the 3:09 mark but that is as close as they would get as the Tars would cruise to the victory.

The Panthers led by as many as 11 in that one.  Pat Anderson led the Panthers with 23 points in the loss.  Sam Daniels (14) and Jordan Majors (11) also scored in double figures. The Tars have given up big nights to Yunio Barrueta (40 points) from Barry and Caleb Stewart (30 points) from Saint Leo in the past week and a half.
