Sometimes in the game of basketball the ball just doesn't bounce your way. This was the case at Saint Leo Saturday as Rollins fell 77-75 to the Lions after a crazy bounce in the final seconds. The Tars dropped to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the SSC. While Saint Leo improved to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the SSC.
The Tars were led by 21 points from Deion Clark in a losing effort. Jeff Merton added 15- Sam Philpott 12- and- Eric Castaneda 11 for a Tars team that has dropped five of it's last six. The Tars shot 47 percent (25-53) in the game. A Rollins team which came into the game as one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the SSC managed to go just 3-14. Rollins shot 75 percent (22-29) from the free throw line on the game. They edged Saint Leo on the boards 34-33. They had just five assists on 25 made baskets.
The Lions were paced by 30 points from Caleb Stewart- Carter Belling scored 15- while Dewberry scored 14 including the game winner. The Lions shot 48 percent (28-58) in the victory. They knocked down 13 of 33 attempts from the 3-point line (39 percent.) The Lions shot 57 percent (8-14) from the free throw line.
The first half saw the Lions lead by as many as 10 points. The Tars would battle back though and trail by just one (36-35) at halftime.
The second half was a see-saw battle as neither team could shake the other. The Lions looked to be in control as they led by seven with just over 3 minutes to go. The Tars would regain the lead after a Philpott pair of free throws at the 54 second mark. The Lions would tie it 20 seconds later. The Tars would then have the ball with a chance to win it with 14 seconds left. Clark's runner would not fall, Merton would miss a tip in, Rollins would have another shot at a third tip-in and the ball would bounce to nearly half court where Stewart would gather and get to the other end for the left-handed lay-in as time expired.
