Five Tally Double Figures As Rollins Knocks Off Saint Leo.

 Five Rollins players scored in double figures as they knocked off the Saint Leo Lions 85-74 at Warden Arena on Wednesday. With the win Rollins improves to 8-5 and 2-3 in the SSC. The Lions fall to 6-6 and 1-3 in the SSC after the loss. 

 Both teams got off to a slow start on the offensive end as the game was knotted at 8 after a Mayson Quartlebaum basket at the 13:19 mark of the opening half. The Tars would open up a six point lead (16-10) after a Michael Kalina layup with 9:48 in the opening stanza. After taking a nine point lead (26-17) on a Jah Nze  layup with 5:33 until halftime. The next five points went the way of the Lions. Rollins would eventually take a 12 point lead (39-27) at halftime. Rollins shot 51.5 percent from the field in the opening half, 23.1 percent (3-13) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (2-3) from the free throw line in the half. Saint Leo shot 33.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point line (3-9) and 40 percent (2-5) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. 

 The lead grew to 17 in the opening minute of the second half. After a Lenz Dupont hoop the Lions got to within 10 (51-41) with 15:11 to go. The lead would stay in double digits much of the rest of the game as one last push by Saint Leo would get them within nine ((76-67) with 2:10 to go. Nine would be as close as Saint Leo would get the rest of the way as Rollins pulled out the win. 

 Omar Figueroa paced the Tars with 22 points, Jackson Gaffney added 14, Nze scored 13, Ryan Renfro added 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Quartlebaum scored 11. As a team Rollins shot 46.2 percent from the field, 32 percent (8-25) from the 3-point line, and 81 percent (17-21) from the free throw line. Rollins dominated the rebounding battle 51-26. They had 16 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest. 

 Donovan Hill led Saint Leo with 27 points, Luther Smith added 13 points, and Matthew Ansah tallied 10. The Lions shot 41.3 percent from the field, 25 percent (6-24) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (16-20) at the free throw line. They had 11 assists and eight turnovers as a team. 

 Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they battle  Barry in Miami Shores. Tip time is set for 4 PM.

Rollins Returns To SSC Action In Battle With Saint Leo

 The Rollins College Tars return to SSC action as they battle the Saint Leo Lions At Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center.  Rollins (7-5 1-3 SSC) is coming off a split of a pair of games in the Holiday hoops Classic in Las Vegas. After a decisive win over Hawaii Hilo Rollins fell 72-70 to the Colorado School of Mines. Rollins is seventh in the SSC putting up 86.1 points per game while they continue to lock down the opposition giving up an SSC second best 72 points per contest. Rollins shoots 47.4 percent from the floor (third in the SSC,) 37.7 percent from the 3-point line (third SSC,) and 72.8 percent at the free throw line (fourth in the conference.) They are eighth in turnover margin (-1.17,) sixth in assist to turnover ratio (1.44) and dish out 18.7 assists per game (fifth in the SSC.) The Tars are fourth in opponent field goal percentage (41.9 percent,) seventh in 3-point defense (33.6 percent) while they lead the league getting 13.7 more rebounds than the opposition per night (43.3-29.6.) They block 3.1 shots per game (8th SSC) and get 7.1 steals per game (also eighth in the SSC.) The Lions shoot an SSC fifth best 37 percent from the 3-point line while they are ninth defending the 3-point line (36.2 percent.) They also struggle at the free throw line (66.9 percent which is good for 10th in the SSC.) The Lions get 0.4 more rebounds than the opposition (36.9-36.5) which is also 10th in the conference. The Lions are fourth in turnover margin (0.91) and eighth in assist to turnover ratio (1.21.) Cold Shooting Hinders Tars As they Settle For Vegas Split

 The Rollins College Tars had to settle for a split in the Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena in Las Vegas. It was a back and forth game on Sunday night but Rollins struggled shooting the ball and fell 72-70 to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. With the win Mines improves to 5-9 on the season while Rollins sits at 7-5 on the season after the hard-fought loss on Sunday. 

 A night after Rollins jumped out to an 11-0 lead in a win over Hawaii Hilo the Tars were the team that got off to the slow start and fell behind 8-0. A 6-0 run by the Tars cut the Mines lead to two at the 15:02 mark of the first half. Rollins would take the lead (18-17) on a Mayson Quartlebaum jumper at the 9:29 mark of the opening stanza. That lead would be short-lived and ultimately Rollins would  trail by seven (36-29) at halftime. Rollins shot 32.3 percent in the first half, 23.5 percent (4-17) from the 3-point line, and 42.9 percent (3-7) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. The Orediggers shot 42.9 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line, and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the free throw line in the opening half. 

 The Orediggers would stretch the lead to 10 to start the second half. Omar Figueroa would bury a triple for the Tars to get them within four (46-42) with 14:49 to play. Mines maintained that lead before Rollins got a Marshall Klug 3-pointer and a pair of Jah Nze free throws to take a 60-59 lead with 8:10 on the clock. After the two teams traded the lead Alex Romack would convert a three-point play to give the Orediggers the edge 64-63 with 7:06 on the clock. Rollins would pick the wrong time to go more than four minutes without a point before Nze finally nailed a trey at the 3:04 mark to make it 67-66 Mines. An Nze layup at the 2:18 mark would knot the game at 68 after an Orediggers free throw. Cooper Mroczek would give the Orediggers the lead but Nze would calmly drain a pair of free throws with 41 ticks left to knot the game at 70. After a Rollins defensive stop Mroczek would convert an offensive rebound into what would be the game winning basket. Rollins had a pair of looks on the final possession but neither would fall. 

 Nze paced the Tars with 22 points while Figueroa added 13. Rollins shot 38.1 percent from the field, 27.3 percent (9-33) from the 3-point line, and 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 42-31. The Tars had 16 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest. 

"It was a tough start for us in the first 12 minutes of the game and we had to battle uphill for the last 28 minutes," Rollins assistant coach Kyle Frakes mentioned on the postgame show on WPRK. "They made the tough layups and shots late in the shot clock that we didn't and that was the difference in the game,"Frakes explained. 

 The Orediggers were paced by Mroczek with 18 while Kellon Johnson and Trent Minter each added 12. Mines shot 49.1 percent from the field, 32 percent (8-25) from the 3-point line, and 63.2 percent (12-19) at the free throw line. They had 18 assists and 12 turnovers as a team. 

 Rollins will be back on action on December 31st when they take on Saint Leo. Tip time from Warden Arena is set for 2 PM.

Rollins Rolls Past Hawaii Hilo

 The Rollins College Tars scored the games first 11 points behind the hot shooting of Jah Nze and never looked back in a 89-69 drubbing of Hawaii Hilo at the Holiday Hoops Classic at South Pointe Arena in Las Vegas Saturday. With the win Rollins improves to 7-4 and 1-3 in the SSC. The Vulcans dropped to 0-8 on the year. 

It took until the 14:59 mark of the first half before the Vulcans got on the board with a pair of free throws by Charles Higby. Nze hit another triple to extend the Rollins lead to 12 (14-2.) After Ryan Renfro converted a layup at the 11:30 mark of the first half the Tars extended the lead to 16 (22-6.) After another Nze trey it was 34-15 in favor of the Tars with 6:50 until halftime. The lead expanded to a game high 21 (38-17) after another Renfro layup with 4:55 left in the half. Rollins took a 21 point lead (48-27) into the locker room. Rollins shot 52.7 percent from the field, 50 percent (8-16) from the 3-point line, and 0-1 at the free throw line in the half. The Vulcans shot 32.3 percent from the field, 9.1 percent (1-11) from the 3-point line, and 6-6 at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. 

 Rollins extended the lead to 26 (53-27) 1:15 into the second half. The Tars largest lead was 31 (62-31) after a Mayson Quartlebaum layup with 15:32 to go. Rollins would cruise to victory from that point on. Nze knocked down six triples on his way to 22 points, Marshall Klug added 13, Ricky Ghedini tallied 12, and Renfo stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Rollins shot 48.5 percent from the field, 46.9 percent (15-32) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (8-10) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 44-34. They had 25 assists and 12 turnovers in the contest. 

 Hawaii Hilo was led by Julio Montes with 17, Alex Horiuk added 12 to go along with 11 rebounds, Jessiya Villa had 11, and Jamal Entezami notched 10. The Vulcans shot 39.4 percent from the field, 25 percent (6-24) from the 3-point line, and 91.7 percent (11-12) from the free throw line in the loss. They added eight assists and 10 turnovers in the defeat.

Tars Travel To Las Vegas For Pair Of Games In Holiday Hoops Classic

 The Rollins College Tars (6-4 1-3 SSC) travel to Las Vegas for a pair of games in the Holiday Hoops Classic this weekend. On Saturday (12/20) Rollins takes on the University of Hawaii at Hilo at 9 PM Eastern time while the following day they will take on the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.  Noting the Tars: Rollins has won two straight. Last time out they beat South Florida Bible 85-57 after picking up their first conference win in a 84-78 victory over Tampa in the previous contest. Rollins scores an SSC sixth best 86.4 points per game while they give up an SSC second best 72.3 points per night. Rollins shoots a league third best 48.2 percent from the field, an SSC second best 37.9 percent from the 3-point line, and shoot at a 73.2 percent clip from the free throw line which is fourth in the league. Noting the Orediggers: It has been a rare down year thus far for the School of Mines (4-8.) It is the first time since the 2021-22 season the Orediggers have won less than 25 games. Going back even further with the exception of that 2021-22 season the School of Mines has won at least 23 games in each season since the 2014-15 campaign. Last time out the Orediggers fell 81-73 to Colorado Mesa. Of the four wins secured by Mines three of them have come at home. Prior to playing the Tars on Sunday Mines will take on Montana State Billings. In the loss to Mesa five Orediggers scored in double figures led by Alex Romack with 16, Markus Pastorcic- Straun added 15, Jonathan Moore netted 13, Cooper Mrozeck had 12, and Braydon Jacob tallied 10. The Orediggers score 78 points per game while they allow 78 per night. They shoot 43.7 percent from the field, 33.1 percent from the 3-point line, and 69.5 percent at the free throw line. Defense Is Key As Rollins Disposes of Pesky Rams.

 The Rollins College Tars and South Florida Bible College Rams did battle at Warden Arena on Saturday. After a hard fought first half that saw the Tars have an eight point lead, they did a better job of protecting the ball in the final 20 minutes and came away with the 85-57 win. Rollins improved to 6-4 on the year.  

Rollins jumped out to a quick start as they led 5-0 as Marshall Klug scored the first five points of the contest on a basket as well as an and one. After Jah Nze nailed a triple at the 16:34 mark of the first half  Rollins held a 13-2 advantage. The Rans got to within six before a Michael Niemann triple and dunk gave Rollins a 21-10 lead halfway through the first half. The Rams came back and got to within four (27-23) as Herb Augustin nailed a triple with 6:18 until halftime. Ryan Renfro hit back to back buckets and Jackson Gaffney knocked down a three to stretch the lead back to double digits. After a mini surge by the Rams that saw Carter Kuzmin score right before halftime it was 36-28 in favor of Rollins. Rollins shot 54.2 percent from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (6-8) from the free throw line in the opening half. South Florida Bible shot 33 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from the 3-point line (4-11) and 80 percent (4-5) at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. 

 Rollins took control early in the second half as the Tars scored the first 10 points of the half to stretch the lead to 18. That lead grew to 24 as Omar Figueroa continued his torrid early season shooting to knock down a pair of triples. After Ricky Ghedinni hit a trey the lead was a game high 27 (68-41.) The lead would grow to as many as 28 as Rollins would cruise to the win. 

 Nze led the Tars with 14, Gaffney added 12, and both Klug and Mayson Quartlebaum had nine. Quartlebaum added a game high eight rebounds. Rollins shot 52.8 percent from the field, 37 percent (10-27) from the 3-point line, and 82.6 percent (19-23) from the free throw line. Rollins dominated the glass 48-25. They had 19 assists and 18 turnovers in the contest. 

 The Rams were led by Herb Augustin with 13 while Samuel Smith and Quan Vickers each tallied nine. They shot 30.9 percent from the field, 31 percent (9-29) from the 3-point line, and 85.7 percent (6-7) at the free throw line. They had 12 assists and 10 turnovers as a team.

 Rollins (5-4 1-3 SSC) finally got in the win column in conference play behind a 29 point effort from Jah Nze, 16 points from Omar Figueroa, 11 from from Ryan Renfro, and 10 from Mayson Quartlebaum in a 84-78 win over the University of Tampa on Saturday. Rollins scores an SSC sixth best 87.7 points per night while on the defensive end they are tied for second in the conference surrendering 74 points per night. The Tars shoot 47.7 percent from the field (second in the SSC,) 38 percent from the 3-point line (second in the SSC,) and 72.1 percent at the free throw line (fifth in the SSC.) They also dish out 18.2 assists per game which is sixth in the conference. Nze, Figueroa Spark Tars First Conference Win.

 Jah Nze and Omar Figueroa combined for 45 points as the Rollins College Tars found the win column for the first time in Sunshine State Conference play with a 84-78 win at Warden Arena. Rollins snapped a brief two game losing streak and improves to 5-4 and 1-3 in the SSC. Tampa falls to 4-4 and 0-3 in the SSC after Saturday's loss. 

 It was a slow start for both teams on the offensive end. After Jackson Gaffney made a layup at the 15:25 mark of the opening half Rollins held a brief 7-5 advantage. Tampa would then go on a 15-0 run as the Spartans would get hot from long range. A Trey Lane triple at the 10:51 mark would give UT a 20-7 lead. Rollins would battle back and get to within one (33-32) at halftime. The Tars shot 46.4 percent from the field, 20 percent (2-10) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (4-5) at the free throw line in the half. The Spartans shot 40 percent from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) from the 3-point line, and 40 percent (2-5) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. 

 The Spartans maintained the lead after a quick five points to open the second half. Rollins got to within one (43-42) after a Matus Malovec triple and a Mayson Quartleblum layup with 14:57 to go. The Tars would tie the game at 47 on a Nze trey with 13:02 on the clock. The game was knotted at 52 before a Ryan Renfro layup and three Figueroa free throws made it a five point Rollins lead. Figueroa and Nze both connected from long range to extend the Tars lead to eight (65-57) with 8:22 to go. The Rollins lead grew to double digits on a pair of Renfro free throws (73-63) with 4:49 to go. Rollins would hold off a late push by the Spartans in the final minute to secure the six point win. 

 Nze led the way with 29 points and five assists, Figueroa knocked down three triples on his way to 16, Renfro added 11, and Quartlebaum notched 10. Rollins shot 50 percent from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (28-32) from the free throw line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 35-30. They also had 14 assists and 17 turnovers in the contest. 

 Tampa was paced by 26 points and 10 rebounds from Ryan Blount while Trey Lane added 22. The Spartans shot 42.4 percent from the floor, 37 percent (10-27) from the 3-point line, and 60 percent (18-30) at the free throw line. 

 Rollins will be back in action Monday when they host South Florida Bible at Warden Arena at 6 PM.

Three Score In Double Figures As Rollins Falls In Lakeland.

 The Rollins College Tars went toe to toe with the #18 team in the country at Streamline Sail Arena inside the George Jenkins FieldHouse. In a game that featured seven ties and nine lead changes the Mocs prevailed 93-88. With their seventh straight win Southern improves to 8-1 and 2-0 in the SSC Rollins fell to 4-4 and 0-3 in the SSC after the narrow loss. 

 The teams went back and forth early. Jah Nze converted a layup and Ryan Renfo made a basket to give the visitors a 13-8 lead at the 14:53 mark of the opening half. Marshall Klug and Matus Malovec connected from long range to give the Tars a nine point lead (21-12) with 11:39 in the opening half. After another Nze triple the Tars were up by 12 (24-12.) The next eight points were secured by the Mocs as Amare Miller cut the lead to four (24-20) at the 10:10 mark until halftime. The Mocs battled back and knotted the game at 33 on two Miller free throws with 4:16 in the half. After a few ties Rollins retook the lead 43-41 at the half after a Renfro layup. Rollins shot 45.2 percent in the first half, 43.8 percent (7-16) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (8-10) at the free throw line in the opening stanza. The Mocs shot 51.7 percent from the field, 37.5 percent (6-16) from the 3-point line, and 71.4 percent (5-7) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. 

 A pair of triples by Ameer Ramdan to open the second half gave the Mocs a four point lead but Jackson Gaffney answered with a three of his own to make it a one point game (47-46 FSC) at the 18:10 mark. Once again the Tars would retake the lead (54-52) as Mayson Quartlebaum made a layup with 14:32 to go. After a trey by Ricky Ghedini Rollins led by five (59-54) with 11:40 on the clock. The Mocs would score the next five point to knot the game at 59. Rollins would again open up a seven point lead after an 8-1 run on a Nze layup with 8:22 to go made it 67-60. A 15-1 burst by the Mocs would give them a seven point lead 75-68. FSC would extend that lead to 11 (80-69.) Down 10 with 1:33 to go Rollins made a late push. Ultimately it would not be enough as Rollins fell 93-88.

 The Mocs balanced attack had six players score in double figures. Miller paced FSC with 24, Ramadan and Brady Corso each had 15, Elijah Walsh and Khalil Ross each had 12, while Charlie Dalton scored 12. The Mocs shot 53.4 percent from the field, 41.4 percent (12-29) from the 3-point line, and 73.1 percent (19-26) from the free throw line. They had 21 assists and 12 turnovers in this one.

Figueroa Scores 23 As Slow Start Sinks Rollins In Loss To Panthers.

 Omar Figueroa led the way with 23 points for the Rollins Tars on Wednesday night at Warden Arena but that was not the story of the night. The story of night was how Rollins did not score in the games first 6:37 and did not make a field goal until the 12:18 mark of the opening half. Rollins battled uphill the rest of the night and ultimately fell 71-65 to the Florida Tech Panthers. The loss dropped the Tars to 4-3 as they lost for the first time in five tries at Warden Arena this season. After an 0-4 start Florida Tech has now won four straight to even their record at 4-4 on the year. The Panthers are 1-1 in Sunshine State Conference play while the Tars fall to 0-2 in SSC action. 

To say both teams got off to a slow start offensively would be an understatement. A 3-pointer by Ty Harpring of the Panthers were the first points of the game 1:55 seconds in. Noah Van Bibber had a tip-in to make it 5-0 in favor of the visitors at the first media timeout. Rollins finally got on the board as Marshall Klug hit three free throws at the 13:23 mark to make it a 5-3 game. A Mayson Quartbaum basket kept the Rollns deficit at four (9-5) with 12:18 until halftime. Rollins made a mini surge as Figueroa would hit back to back triples, the second knotting the game at 11 with 10:33 in the half. The Panthers would slowly pull away as they would lead by as many as 15 and take a 13 point lead (37-24) lead into the halftime break. Rollins shot 27.8 percent from the field, 23.1 percent (3-13) from the 3-point line, and a perfect 3-3 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. The Panthers shot 46.9 percent from the field, 37.5 percent (6-16) from the 3-point line, and one of one at the free throw line in the opening stanza. 

 Rollins got off to solid start in the second half as the half opened with a technical foul on the Panthers. Jah Nze hit both free throws, before Klug and  Renfro had baskets to make it a seven point Rollins deficit (37-30) early in the second half, The Panthers stopped the momentum as Harpring hit a pair of triples to stretch the lead back out to double figures. After falling down 15 the Tars went on another 6-0 run as Figueroa converted a layup to make it 55-46 at the 8:45 mark. Again, a 3-pointer by Florida Tech, this one by Brewer Nitcher restored a double digit lead. Down 14 with 6:08 to go Rollins started on the comeback trail again. a tip in by Renfo, followed by a trey by Figueroa and another by Nze made it a six point game (63-57) at the 3:39 mark. Rollins would get as close as four on a pair of Renfo free throws but that is as close as the Tars would get as Tech would do just enough to close out the road win.

The Panthers shot 48.1 percent from the field, 40.7 percent (11-27) from the 3-point line, and 52.6 percent (10-19) from the free throw line. They had 15 assists and 16 turnovers as a team.

The Tars are coming off a 119-49 drubbing of Warner last time out. Six Tars scored in double figures with Omar Figueroa leading the way with 16 points. Michael Niemann added 14 off the bench, Jackson Gaffney tallied 13, Michael Kalina and Cheo James each had 12, while Jah Nze notched 10.
