The Rollins Tars got a Connor McKim layup with 19 seconds left and held on for a 78-75 win over Nova Southeastern in the Quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Wednesday from Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. The win improved the Tars to 16-13 on the year as they will now advance to take on top seeded Barry on Saturday at Jenkins FieldHouse on the campus of Florida Southern. The Sharks season ended at 17-10, as they lost four straight to end the year.
All five Rollins starters scored in double figures in the victory. Jeff Merton hit four 3-pointer's in the early going to account for most of his 18 points on the evening that led the way for Rollins. McKim added 14- Sam Philpott notched 13- Eric Castaneda scored 11- and- Deion Clark netted 10 in the victory. Rollins shot 56 percent from the field- 48 percent (10-21) from the 3-point line- and- 67 percent (12-18) from the free throw line in the contest. The Tars had 19 assists and 14 turnovers in the game.
NSU was led by Malik Hardy who scored a game high 30 points- Gerard Tarin added 14- and- Nick Smith scored 10 in the loss. The Sharks shot 49 percent from the floor- 24 percent (4-17) from the 3-point line- and- 81 percent (17-21) at the free throw line. The Sharks won the rebounding battle 31-23. They had 15 assists and 15 turnovers as a team.
Rollins would score the games first five points right out of the gate as Merton would knock down a 3-pointer and would feed Castaneda for a layup. Rollins would lead 16-8 before NSU would answer with six straight points. After a Tarin dunk the Sharks trailed 16-14 at the 12:49 mark of the opening half. Rollins would then open up a nine point lead (30-21) after a Parker Davis layup with 6:34 until halftime. The Tars would lead by as many as 11 (37-26) after a McKim 3-pointer with 2:44 to go in the half. The Tars would take a eight point advantage (39-31) into the locker room.
Merton was the only Rollins player in double figures with 12 in the opening half. Philpott and McKim each added five. The Tars shot 60 percent in the first 20 minutes- 63 percent (7-11) from the 3-point line- and- 50 percent (2-4) at the free throw line. They had 11 assists and seven turnovers in the opening half.
NSU was led by Hardy with 11- Dwayne Gibson and Tarin added six each. The Sharks shot 46 percent from the field and missed all six 3-pointer's in the first 20 minutes. They did shoot 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line. NSU won the rebounding battle 16-8 in the opening stanza. They had three assists and 11 turnovers in the half.
The Sharks quickly erased the halftime deficit and would knot the game at 45 after a Smith 3-pointer at the 15:58 mark. NSU would lead by two (56-54) halfway thru the second half. The Sharks would have what would be the largest lead of the game for them 62-54 after a Hardy 3-pointer with 9:02 to go. Rollins would chip away and at the 4:34 mark they would tie the game with a Clark tip-in. Merton would split a pair of free throws before NSU would get the lead back (70-69) after a Nick Stampley tip-in with just under four minutes to go. Castaneda would score the next four Rollins points as he would hit a pair of free throws and then make a layup with 1:20 to go to give the Tars a 73-70 lead. Hardy would knot the game at 73 with a 3-pointer with 45 seconds to go. McKim would give Rollins the lead for good after a layup with 19 seconds to go. After a big defensive stop by Rollins Merton would split a pair of free throws with nine seconds left. Rollins would foul with six seconds to go and Hardy would hit both free throws to make it 76-75. McKim's free throws with 4.9 seconds would stretch the lead to three (78-75.) David Dennis would try and draw a foul with two seconds left but it was ruled that he initiated the contact, Jeff Merton secured the rebound and the Tars advanced to play Barry on Saturday.

Tars Welcome Sharks To Winter Park For SSC Quarterfinal Wednesday.
The fourth seeded Rollins Tars will host the fifth seeded Nova Southeastern Sharks in the Quarterfinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Wednesday night at 7 PM at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. David Dennis leads the Sharks and is fifth in the SSC scoring 19.6 points per game. Dennis also averages 6.8 assists and 6.3 rebounds a contest. Rollins Snaps Losing Skid With Win At Saint Leo.
The Rollins Tars snapped a six game losing skid with a 81-66 win over Saint Leo at the Marion Bowman Activities Center Saturday. With the win the Tars will be the fourth seed in the SSC Tournament and will host #5 Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. Saint Leo with the loss did not qualify for the post-season as they fell to ninth after Florida Tech beat Nova earlier Saturday. With the win Rollins improves to 15-13 and 11-9 in the SSC. With the loss the Lions dropped to 12-19 and 8-12 in the SSC.
Eric Castaneda paced three Tars in double figures with 18 points. Jakobi Bonner and Connor McKim each scored 17- while Sam Philpott returned and scored nine. The Tars shot 53 percent from the floor- 50 percent (10-20) from the 3-point line- and- 77 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. The Tars edged Saint Leo on the boards 35-30. They had 13 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
Saint Leo was led by 19 points from Junior Searcy. The only other Lion in double figures was DeAndre King with 17. The Lions shot 41 percent as a team- 29 percent (9-31) from the 3-point line- and- 69 percent (11-16) from the free throw line. The Lions had 16 assists and 13 turnovers.

Tars Look To Get Back On Track In Season Finale At Saint Leo.
The Rollins Tars have dropped six straight games and will look to a place where they have had a lot of success in past seasons, the Marion Bowman Activities Center where they will face the Saint Leo Lions in the regular season finale for both teams Saturday. The Tars come in with a record of 14-13 and 10-9 in the SSC. Saint Leo comes into the contest with a 12-18 record and 7-12 in the SSC. Bonner Has Career Day in Rollins Loss on Senior Day.
The Rollins Tars celebrated senior day on Saturday at Warden Arena. They would fall 85-80 to Eckerd after senior's Jack Fleming- Jeff Merton and Deion Clark were honored prior to the game. Another senior Sam Philpott remained sidelined with an injury as the Tars dropped a sixth straight game.With the loss Rollins dropped to 14-13 and 10-9 in the SSC. Rollins has fallen to sixth place in the conference. With the victory Eckerd improved to 19-6 and 12-6 in the SSC.
Jakobi Bonner had a career high 23 points in the losing effort. Bonner was a perfect nine of nine at the free throw line in this one. Jeff Merton added 21- while Deion Clark scored 15. The Tars shot 56 percent from the field- 45 percent (9-20) from the 3-point line- and- 83 percent (15-18) at the free throw line. The Tars had 11 assists- and- 11 turnovers.
Eckerd was led by Trevon Young who scored 21 points- Drushaun McLaurn added 17- Marco Behori added 14- and- Blake Morrow netted 10. The Tritons shot 53 percent from the field- 48 percent (11-23) from the 3-point line- and- 71 percent (12-17) from the free throw line. EC won the rebounding battle 32-23. They had 25 assists and 12 turnovers in this one.
Both teams would start out hot on the offensive end. After a Jack Fleming 3-pointer at the 13:09 mark the Tars owned a 20-19 lead. Bonner would sink a pair of free throws three minutes later and Rollins had a two point edge (24-22) halfway thru the opening half. The game would go back and forth for the next several minutes and a layup by Connor McKim would give the Tars a 38-36 lead with 4:48 to go in the half. The Tritons would close the half on a 12-2 run to take a eight point lead (48-40) into the locker room.
Young would be the only Eckerd player in double figures in the opening half. The big man had 17 points and seven rebounds in the opening stanza. Three other Eckerd players would score six in the first 20 minutes. They shot 56 percent from the field- 53 percent (8-15) from the 3-point line- and- 80 percent (4-5) at the free throw line. The Tritons out-rebounded Rollins 18-7 in the opening stanza. They had 12 assists and just four turnovers as a team.

Jeff Merton would nail a 3-pointer for Rollins six minutes later and they would be within two (75-73) with 2:02 remaining. That is close as the Tars would get as Eckerd secured the victory.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday 2/24 in the last regular season game of the year when they travel to Saint Leo. Tip time is set for 4 PM.

Rollins Looks To Rebound Saturday.
The Rollins Tars look to rebound both literally and figuratively Saturday when they host the Eckerd College Tritons at Warden Arena. Rollins comes into Saturday's game on a five game losing skid and with a 14-12 record and 10-8 in the SSC. While the Tritons are 18-6 and 11-6 in the SSC. The Tars come into the game tied for fifth in the SSC with Lynn. They look to remain in the mix for a home game (top four seeds play at home) in the conference tournament with three games left to go. The Tars have yet to win a game in the month of February but come into Saturday with a 11-4 record at home on the season. The last time out Rollins was a 90-71 loser to Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. Jeff Merton and Jakobi Bonner scored 19 points each to lead Rollins in the defeat. Sam Philpott leads the Tars in scoring at 18.7 points per game but remains out with an injury. Merton scores 15.8 points and grabs 4.4 rebounds a night- Eric Castaneda averages 11.6 points and grabs 4.7 rebounds per contest. Connor McKim scores 11.3 points and dishes out 3.3 assists per night- while Deion Clark also averages in double figures getting 11.1 points a night. The Tars average a league fifth best 83.8 points a game- but on the defensive end they are seventh allowing 82.4 per night.

Reeling Tars Drop Fifth Straight.
The Rollins Tars dropped a fifth straight contest Wednesday, with a 89-70 defeat against Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale. With the loss Rollins fell to 14-12 and 10-8 in the SSC. It was the fifth straight defeat for Rollins. On the other side of the ledger NSU improved to 17-6 overall and 11-6 in the SSC with a fifth straight victory.
The trio of David Dennis- Malik Hardy- and- Nick Smith combined for 70 of the Sharks 89 points. NSU shot 46 percent as a team- 48 percent (13-27) from the 3-point line- and- 78 percent (21-27) from the free throw line. The Sharks dominated the rebounding battle 41-27. They had 23 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
Rollins who was once again playing without leading scorer Sam Philpott was led by Jakobi Bonner and Jeff Merton who scored 19 points each. They were the only two players in double figures as Deion Clark added eight. The Tars shot 47 percent as a team- 33 percent (6-18) from the 3-point line- and- 81 percent (21-26) at the free throw line. They had 15 assists and 17 turnovers as a team.

The Rollins Tars (14-11 10-7 SSC) began a crucial point in there schedule when they hit the road to take on the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday night. The Sharks (16-6 10-6 SSC) and the Tars have been heading in opposite directions of late. The Tars have lost four straight-while NSU has reeled off four straight wins. PBA Sneaks Past Rollins.
The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish knocked off the Rollins College Tars 89-83 Saturday at Warden Arena. Rollins has dropped four straight and falls to 14-11 and 10-7 in the SSC. PBA improves to 13-14 and 7-9 in the SSC.

PBA Travels To Winter Park Saturday.
The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish visit Warden Arena in Winter Park on Saturday for a 4 PM tip. You can catch all the action on RollinsSports.com with Jim "Shooter' Ferro and Robert Siegel. The Tars are 14-10 overall and 10-6 in the SSC. On the other side PBA comes in with a 12-14 record and 6-9 in the SSC.
Rollins had lost three straight and is coming off a wild 90-88 loss to Florida Southern on Wednesday night. After trailing by 24 points at the half the Tars rallied and took the lead with under three minutes to go before ultimately falling. Rollins split the season series with the Mocs, as each won on the others home floor. Eric Castaneda had 30 of his 34 points in the second half Wednesday to lead the furious comeback. Jeff Merton scored 19 points- while Connor McKim added 13. Sam Philpott leads the Tars in scoring on the year at 18.7 points a game but has not reached double figures in any of the past three contests (all losses.) Philpott did leave the game Wednesday early with an injury. Merton scores 15.7 per game and grabs 4.7 rebounds a night. Tars Erase Huge Deficit, Fall Late To Southern Wednesday.
The Rollins Tars have been a tale of two teams much of the season. The Tars came in having been bad on the road and almost unbeatable at home. The Tars were at home on Wednesday started out the game playing the first half like a road game before mounting a furious comeback, taking the lead late before falling 90-88 to Florida Southern. With the loss Rollins fall into third place in the SSC at 14-10 overall and 10-6 SSC with its third straight loss. Southern improved to 15-9 overall and 9-7 in the SSC with the win.
The Tars were led by Eric Castaneda who scored 30 of his career high 34 points in the second half. Castaneda would have three free throws to tie the game in the waning seconds, but would make the first- then miss the second- before missing the third intentionally with less than a second to go. Jeff Merton added 19- while Connor McKim scored 13 points- dished out seven assists- and- grabbed five rebounds. The Tars shot 50 percent as a team. They shot 39 percent (11-28) from the 3-point line. Rollins shot at a 71 percent clip (15-21) at the free throw line. The Tars had 19 assists and seven turnovers in the contest.
Jonathan Lawton and Brett Hanson had 24 points each to lead the Mocs who have now won three straight. Trey Diggs also netted 21 for FSC. The Mocs shot 55 percent from the field- 56 percent (19-34) from the 3-point line- and- 64 percent (9-14) at the free throw line. The Mocs won the rebounding battle 33-27. They had 24 assists and 14 turnovers as a team.
The Mocs could not miss in the opening 20 minutes. They shot 72 percent from the field- and- 72 percent (13-18) from the 3-point line. Lawton hit a 3-ball on the opening possession and FSC was off and running. They would lead 26-11 halfway thru the opening stanza. The Tars briefly got to within 11 but the Mocs would stretch the lead to 58-34 at the intermission.
The Tars got six points from Castaneda during a 10-2 run that got them within 16 (60-44) with 17:40. The next next eight minutes would see the Tars get no closer than 11 as the Mocs looked to be in control. The Tars would go on a 14-5 run and get to within two (78-76) at the 4:03 mark of the contest. Castaneda knotted the game at 79 with a 3-pointer and then after a stop by Rollins on defense another Castaneda 3-pointer would give them a 82-79 lead with under three minutes to go. Diggs hit a 3-pointer for the Mocs- Castaneda scored in the paint- and- then Lawton 3-pointer gave Southern a four point lead (88-84) with one minute to go. A three-point play by Castaneda got Rollins within one (88-87) with 39 seconds left. After a Rollins stop Deion Clark was fouled with seven seconds to go. Clark missed the front end of the one and one, so he had to quickly foul Lawton. Lawton made both free throws to make it 90-87. Castaneda took the inbounds pass and fired a long heave with one second left and was fouled in the act of shooting. After making the first- Castaneda missed the second- and- intentionally missed the third as he was called for a line violation as Southern escaped with a victory and a season series split with Rollins.

First it was Embry-Riddle who upset the Tars 98-89 on Wednesday, then on Saturday the Tars were bitten by a place that has been a house of horrors for them for many years, the Martinez Center at Tampa. with a 87-82 loss.The Tars come into Wednesday's contest having won 11 straight at home. The Tars escaped the first meeting between the two teams 117-111 in double overtime on 1/13. Jeff Merton led the Tars in the Tampa contest with 19 points and seven rebounds. Connor McKim scored 17 in that one- while Jack Fleming contributed 13- and- Deion Clark scored 12.

Tampa Upsets Tars.
Rollins was a 87-82 loser to Tampa at the Bob Martinez Center on Saturday afternoon. The Tars dropped into a first place tie with Eckerd at 14-9 and 10-5 in the SSC. Tampa improved to 8-14 and 4-11 in the SSC.
Jeff Merton led the Tars with 19 points on the day. Connor McKim scored 17- Jack Fleming had 13- Deion Clark scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds.
Marcell Robinson led Tampa with 25. Duke Shelton scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Lastly, Anthony Gamble netted 19.
Rollins shot 49 percent from the field and went 7 of 10 at the free throw line. Tampa shot 53 percent- and- went 17 of 18 from the foul line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 31-30. Rollins had nine turnovers to Tampa's 11.
Rollins jumped out to a 16-6 lead six minutes in. Rollins stretched that lead to 15 (23-8) halfway thru the opening stanza. Tampa would rally late in the half and knot the game at 33 with 1:53 in the half. The Spartans would take a 40-35 lead into the locker room.
Tampa stretched the lead to 49-38 three minutes into the half. It was 64-51 Tampa with just under nine minutes to go. Fleming would hit a pair of 3-pointers and Rollins would be down one (76-75) with 1:49 remaining. After a dunk by Shelton, Clark got the Tars within one once again. Robinson nailed a 3-pointer and a steal and bucket for Tampa would ice it with 20 seconds to go.

Marcell Robinson led Tampa with 25. Duke Shelton scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Lastly, Anthony Gamble netted 19.
Rollins shot 49 percent from the field and went 7 of 10 at the free throw line. Tampa shot 53 percent- and- went 17 of 18 from the foul line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 31-30. Rollins had nine turnovers to Tampa's 11.
Rollins jumped out to a 16-6 lead six minutes in. Rollins stretched that lead to 15 (23-8) halfway thru the opening stanza. Tampa would rally late in the half and knot the game at 33 with 1:53 in the half. The Spartans would take a 40-35 lead into the locker room.
Tampa stretched the lead to 49-38 three minutes into the half. It was 64-51 Tampa with just under nine minutes to go. Fleming would hit a pair of 3-pointers and Rollins would be down one (76-75) with 1:49 remaining. After a dunk by Shelton, Clark got the Tars within one once again. Robinson nailed a 3-pointer and a steal and bucket for Tampa would ice it with 20 seconds to go.
