Rollins was a 87-82 loser to Tampa at the Bob Martinez Center on Saturday afternoon. The Tars dropped into a first place tie with Eckerd at 14-9 and 10-5 in the SSC. Tampa improved to 8-14 and 4-11 in the SSC.
Jeff Merton led the Tars with 19 points on the day. Connor McKim scored 17- Jack Fleming had 13- Deion Clark scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds.
Marcell Robinson led Tampa with 25. Duke Shelton scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Lastly, Anthony Gamble netted 19.
Rollins shot 49 percent from the field and went 7 of 10 at the free throw line. Tampa shot 53 percent- and- went 17 of 18 from the foul line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 31-30. Rollins had nine turnovers to Tampa's 11.
Rollins jumped out to a 16-6 lead six minutes in. Rollins stretched that lead to 15 (23-8) halfway thru the opening stanza. Tampa would rally late in the half and knot the game at 33 with 1:53 in the half. The Spartans would take a 40-35 lead into the locker room.
Tampa stretched the lead to 49-38 three minutes into the half. It was 64-51 Tampa with just under nine minutes to go. Fleming would hit a pair of 3-pointers and Rollins would be down one (76-75) with 1:49 remaining. After a dunk by Shelton, Clark got the Tars within one once again. Robinson nailed a 3-pointer and a steal and bucket for Tampa would ice it with 20 seconds to go.
