The Rollins Tars snapped a six game losing skid with a 81-66 win over Saint Leo at the Marion Bowman Activities Center Saturday. With the win the Tars will be the fourth seed in the SSC Tournament and will host #5 Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. Saint Leo with the loss did not qualify for the post-season as they fell to ninth after Florida Tech beat Nova earlier Saturday. With the win Rollins improves to 15-13 and 11-9 in the SSC. With the loss the Lions dropped to 12-19 and 8-12 in the SSC.
Eric Castaneda paced three Tars in double figures with 18 points. Jakobi Bonner and Connor McKim each scored 17- while Sam Philpott returned and scored nine. The Tars shot 53 percent from the floor- 50 percent (10-20) from the 3-point line- and- 77 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. The Tars edged Saint Leo on the boards 35-30. They had 13 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
Saint Leo was led by 19 points from Junior Searcy. The only other Lion in double figures was DeAndre King with 17. The Lions shot 41 percent as a team- 29 percent (9-31) from the 3-point line- and- 69 percent (11-16) from the free throw line. The Lions had 16 assists and 13 turnovers.
The game was knotted at 10 after the first five minutes. The Lions then scored the next 11 points to take a 21-10 lead at the 12:09 mark of the half. The Tars would pull within two (25-23) after a pair of Castaneda free throws at the 6:04 mark of the first stanza. A Castaneda layup would give the Tars the lead 28-27 at the 3:40 mark of the half. The Tars would take a 35-34 lead into the locker room.
Castaneda led the Rollins with nine in the first stanza- while McKim added eight. Rollins shot 44 percent in the opening half- 56 percent (5-9) from the 3-point line- and- 75 percent (6-8) at the free throw line. The Tars had six assists and eight turnovers in the half.
Saint Leo was led by 12 points from King in the first half- while Searcy added eight. The Lions shot 45 percent from the field- 40 percent (6-15) from the 3-point line- and- 50 percent (2-4) from the free throw line. The Lions had 10 assists and seven turnovers in the half.
Rollins would go up by five (44-39) after a Jeff Merton 3-pointer with 16:30 to go. The Lions would go back on tip before a McKim 3-ball would give Rollins the lead. The Rollins lead was trimmed to one (52-51) before a 15-0 Rollins run put the Tars in command. The Lions would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way as the Tars earned the right to host a first round tournament game on Wednesday.
