The Rollins Tars dropped a fifth straight contest Wednesday, with a 89-70 defeat against Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale. With the loss Rollins fell to 14-12 and 10-8 in the SSC. It was the fifth straight defeat for Rollins. On the other side of the ledger NSU improved to 17-6 overall and 11-6 in the SSC with a fifth straight victory.
The trio of David Dennis- Malik Hardy- and- Nick Smith combined for 70 of the Sharks 89 points. NSU shot 46 percent as a team- 48 percent (13-27) from the 3-point line- and- 78 percent (21-27) from the free throw line. The Sharks dominated the rebounding battle 41-27. They had 23 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
Rollins who was once again playing without leading scorer Sam Philpott was led by Jakobi Bonner and Jeff Merton who scored 19 points each. They were the only two players in double figures as Deion Clark added eight. The Tars shot 47 percent as a team- 33 percent (6-18) from the 3-point line- and- 81 percent (21-26) at the free throw line. They had 15 assists and 17 turnovers as a team.
Rollins scored the game's first five points but would trail by 10 (20-10) at the midway point of the opening half. The lead would stay in double digits much of the half, but it would be 40-31 NSU at the break.
Bonner had nine and Merton seven to lead Rollins in the opening half. They shot 47 percent as a team- 33 percent (2-6) from the 3-point line in the opening stanza. The Tars shot 73 percent (11-15) at the free throw line. They had five assists and 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Smith had 17 to lead NSU in the first half. The Sharks shot 43 percent as a team- 31 percent (4-13) from the 3-point line- and- 77 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. The Sharks had a 21-13 edge on the boards. They had eight assists and seven turnovers in the half.
NSU extended the lead to 20 (55-35) with 5:22 to go after a Smith 3-pointer. It would be a 23 point lead on a handful of occasions. The Sharks would cruise to victory from there.
