Tars Let One Slip Away.

The Rollins Tars had several opportunities to close out it's first win inside Warden Arena since January 19th but could not get the job done. The result was a 70-68 overtime loss to the Barry Buccaneers.
With the loss Rollins fell to 17-8 overall and 9-6 in the SSC. The Tars currently sit fourth in the standings with one game left in the regular season. Adam Allen hit three 3-pointers in rout to a team high 15 points in the loss. Kyle McClanahan had another solid game. The Senior from Winter Park posted 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had eight assists plus five steals.  Chris Uhle also chipped in 12 points. The Tars shot 41 percent in the game. The Tars made 12 of 35 3-point attempts and hit eight of nine free throws. The Tars had 14 assists, 11 turnovers, and were out rebounded 36-34.
The Buccaneers improved to 13-12 overall and 6-9 in the SSC. Chad Renfro led the Bucs with 20 points, Vladimir Raymonvil netted 13 and Justin McCoy notched 12 for Barry. The Bucs shot 43 percent for the game and were 14-30 from the 3-point line. The Bucs were 10-16 at the foul line. They had 13 assists and 14 turnovers.
The game started out well for the Tars. They would lead by seven on three separate occasions. Barry would erase that seven point deficit in a hurry and the game would be tied at 23 with 5:50 in the opening half. The Bucs would gain the lead 29-28 with six seconds left in the half. McClanahan would beat the buzzer right  before the half and the Tars would take a 30-29 halftime lead.
Neither team would be able to get out to a lead in the first part of the second half. The Tars would then get a Uhle jumper and 3-pointer by Allen to go up 45-39 with 8:26 to go. Barry would once again erase the deficit, this time on a Renfro 3 at the five minute mark. Barry would then take a 3-point lead but Brett Chance would nail a 3-pointer to tie the game at 50 with three minutes left. The teams would trade baskets and then Allen would hit a twisting lay up with 1:15 left to give the Tars a two point lead (54-52.) The Tars would get a stop at the other end and looked to have the game well in hand. McClanahan (a 84 percent foul shooter) would miss the front end of a one and one with 23 seconds to go. Barry would score at the other end to tie the game. Mitch Woods would have a chance to win it for the Tars but his shot wouldn't go and the game went into overtime.
In the OT Rollins would score first but Barry would open up a four point lead (64-60.) The Tars would then run off the next five points to regain the lead. Uhle drained another three and McClanahan hit a pair of free throws. Anoter Renfro three would give the Bucs the lead back and they would stretch it to four. The Tars would get  a Woods 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds to cut the lead to one. After a made Barry free throw the Tars had one last chance with 1.8 on the clock and the length of the court to go. Woods shot from half court would fall short and the Tars would suffer a crushing defeat.
Rollins will look to bounce back when they head to Lakeland to take on Florida Southern Saturday night. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM at Jenkins Field House.

Another Slow Start Dooms Tars.

The Rollins Tars got off to another rough start and ultimately would fall 76-60 to Saint Leo in a big Sunshine State Conference showdown on Saturday at Warden Arena.

They had 10 assists and 18 turnovers in the loss.
Saint Leo improved to 20-5 and 12-3 in the SSC. They clinched the regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Tournament when Florida Southern lost to Florida Tech Saturday night. The 20th ranked Lions had four players tally double figures Saturday. Jerrel Harris paced the Lions with a game high 23 points, this included a perfect 10-10 at the free throw line. Trent Thomas provided a huge spark off the Lions bench and netted 15 points. Shaun Adams posted a 13 point day, and Marcus  Ruh scored 12 for Saint Leo. The Lions shot 43.5 percent (20-46) on the day. They were six of 15 from the 3 point line (40 percent.) The Lions made a living at the foul line where they shot 85.7 percent (30-35.) The Lions had six assists and nine turnovers.
The game started with both teams struggling offensively and after a McClanhan 3-pointer the Tars would have a 3-2 lead nearly five minutes into the contest. The Tars would then go ice cold and Trent Thomas would score 10 points off the Leo bench and spark a 13-0 run that would give the Lions a 15-3 lead. That lead would be stretched to 13 (21-8) with 4:30 left in the opening half. The Lions would lead by 16 (34-18) at the half.
The Lions would stretch the lead to 23 (53-30) with 10:45 to go.  The Tars would get to within 10 (58-48) behind a pair of Brett Chance 3-pointers with 6:19 to go. The Tars would get it to eight (60-52) on a Adam Allen tip in with 3:47 to go but that is as close as they would get.

Seeking A Little Payback.

The Rollins College Tars (17-6 9-4 SSC) look to get a little revenge on Saturday afternoon when they host Sunshine State Conference leader Saint Leo in a 4 PM showdown inside the Alfond Sports Center's Warden Arena. The Tars suffered the only road loss of the season when they were crushed by Saint Leo 79-54 on January 26th. After nine and a half minutes the Lions led 27-2 and never looked back.
The Tars come in riding a two game win streak. The zone defense that has been a Tom Klusman staple in his 33 seasons at Rollins has been a big reason why. In the last two victories the Tars have allowed just 47 points a contest. Rollins comes in ranked fifth in the first South region standings that were released on Wednesday. Rollins was a 52-45 winner over Lynn and a 56-48 winner over Nova Southeastern in the last two contests.
Kyle McClanahan leads the way for the Tars on the season scoring 14.9 points a game, he is second in the conference in field goal percentage (57 percent), third in assists (4.6 a game) and eighth in steals (1.7 a game.) Dave Diakite is second on the team at 13.4 points a game and is seventh in the league in rebounding at 6.5 boards a contest. Adam Allen is scoring 10.2 a game as the team's third leading scorer.
The Tars are fourth in the league on offense at 71.7 points a game and are second on the defensive end, giving up just 64.9 a night. The Tars  lead the SSC shooting at a 47 percent clip from the field. Rollins is 8-5 at home on the season, including 3-3 in conference play. The Tars only road loss of the season was to Saint Leo.
Saint Leo comes into Saturday as the conference leader. They have a half game lead on Florida Southern, with the Tars a game and a half back. The Lions are 19-5 overall and 11-3 in the SSC. They have the lead in the conference on the strength of a season sweep of Florida Southern. The Lions last outing was a 62-59 win over Tampa. Marcus Ruh leads the Lions and is fourth in the SSC averaging 16.6 points a game. Ruh has been deadly from the 3-point line on the season, where he is shooting at a 49 percent clip which is good for the top spot in the league. Jerrel Harris puts up 13.8 points a night, while Trent Thomas scores 13.5 a contest. The Lions have the top defense in the league, as they allow
62.5 points a game on the defensive end. The Lions are seventh on offense (69.9 a game.)

The Rollins College Tars (17-6 9-4 SSC) did not play there best game of the year by any stretch of the imagination on Wednesday night at the Don Taft University Center. For the second straight game it was a defensive struggle. The Tars prevailed 56-48 over Nova Southeastern.

The Tars would run off a 8-1 run and lead 16-9 midway thru the opening half. The Tars lead would balloon to as many as 12, and they would lead 29-19 at the half.
The second half would start the same way the first did, as this time it would be Dave Diakite who buried the three to give the Tars a 32-19 lead. The lead would be as many as 14 (41-27) before the Sharks would make a run to cut it to 46-39 at the 7:23 mark. That would be as close as the Sharks would get the rest of the way.  The Tars have now won seven of the past eight versus NSU.

Tars Escape Saturday.

The Rollins College Tars improved to 16-6 and 8-4 in the Sunshine State Conference with a 53-46 win over the Lynn Fighting Knights in Boca Raton Saturday. The win completed a season sweep of the Fighting Knights for the Tars.
The win was just the Tars second in the last six contests. On a night when offense was at a premium it was the free throw line and a stifling zone defense that led the Tars to the much needed victory. The Tars only had 13 made field goals and shot 34 percent in the game. Rollins was a frigid three of 16 from the 3-point line. Where the game was ultimately won for the Tars was at the foul line, where they shot 73 percent (24-33.) The Tars had just six assists and 11 turnovers. Only two Tars scored in double figures on the afternoon. Kyle McClanahan led the way with 15 points, three rebounds and three steals. Mitch Woods added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists in the win. The transfer from Appalachian State was three of four from the field, including two of two from the 3-point line and hit four of five free throws. Brett Chance, Dave Diakite and Adam Allen chipped in seven points each.
The Fighting Knights fell to 11-12 overall and 3-10 in the conference. They were led by 14 points from Jeremy Lampkin. Shamel Akins added seven, while Kevin Ohen and Caleb Klyburn added six each. The Knights shot 36 percent from the field and were two of 20 from the 3-point line. They shot 12 of 13 (93 percent) at the free throw line. LU won the battle of the boards 31-28 and had 10 assists as opposed to 15 turnovers.
The Tars jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the game's first four minutes. Then the Knights would answer as neither team would be able to muster much offense in the next several minutes. The Fighting Knights would go a 15-2 run and lead 17-11 with 6:19 in the opening stanza. Lynn would stretch that lead to 8 (23-15) before the Tars would score the last six points of the opening half and it would be 23-21 Lynn at the break.
The Tars would take the lead at the 16:22 mark as a Woods 3-pointer would make it 29-28 Rollins. The Tars lead would stay between one and four for the next several minutes until a mini run by the Fighting Knights would tie the game at 46 with 2:17 left on a Shamel Atkins basket. McClanahan would hit a big basket right after that and then hit four free throws in the waning moments to ice a much needed win for the Tars.
The Tars improved to 6-1 on the road with the win and will be back in action Wednesday night when they travel to the "Shark Tank" to battle Nova Southeastern. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM. As always you can catch the action at Rollins Sports.com and WPRK 91.5 FM Winter Park.

Tars Look To Get Back In The Zone Saturday at Lynn.

The reeling Rollins College Tars 15-6 (7-4 SSC) losers of four of the last five look to get back into a zone Saturday when they travel to battle the Fighting Knights of Lynn who sit in ninth place in the conference Saturday in Boca Raton.
The Tars are coming off a 87-73 loss to Florida Tech on Wednesday at the Clemente Center. The Tars trailed by as many as 26 points in the thrashing. It got so bad for the Tars on Wednesday that they had to come out of the zone defense that has been a staple of Tom Klusman's tenor for the past 33 seasons. The Panthers shot 15 of 27 from the 3-point line and have allowed 79 points a game during the last five games (the only win in  OT versus Eckerd.) Kyle McClanahan led the Tars on Wednesday with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He leads the Tar in scoring at 14.5 a contest. The grad student from Winter Park is second in field goal percentage (57 percent) and third in assists (5.0 a game.) Dave Diakite chips in 14 points and 6.3 rebounds a night. Diakite had just nine and six rebounds in the loss at the Clemente Center. Adam Allen had 12 points on Wednesday and is scoring 10.5 a contest on the season. Jeff Dirkin and Chris Uhle are two of the top shot blockers in the SSC averaging 1.5 blocks a game (second in the conference.) The Tars are third on both offense and defense.  Rollins averages 73.4 points a game on offense, while they give up 66.6 a game on defense. During the last five games, the Tars are scoring 68 a game while giving up 79 a contest.  The Tars are 5-1 on the road  on the season.
Lynn comes in with a record of 11-11 (3-9 SSC.)  The Fighting Knights are coming off a four point loss to Barry on Wednesday. Kaleb Clyburn and Brandon Smith led the Knights on Wednesday. Clyburn had 14 points, while Smith had 13. Lynn shot 48 percent in the loss Saturday. They held the Bucs to just 36 percent shooting.
Shamel Atkins leads Lynn box score scoring 10.3 a game. Clyburn is the other double digit scorer at 10 a game and Jeremy Lampkin scores 9.9 a game.
The Fighting Knights are last in the SSC on offense, as they score 69.6 points a game. On the defensive end, the Knights are second in the league giving up 65.7 a game. Lynn is the top foul shooting team at 75 percent on the year and are third from the field at 45.6 percent. Lynn is 8-6 at home this season, but just 1-5 in conference play.
The Tars were a 80-63 winner over the Knights in the first meeting in Winter Park. Allen, McClanahan, Diakite and Mitch Woods all scored in double figures in that one.
Slobodan Miljanic led the Knights with 14 in the win, Jeremy Lampkin also had 14, and Kevin Ohen had 10 along with five rebounds.

Hot Shooting Panthers Bury Tars at Home.

It is hard to believe that just five games ago the Rollins Tars were 6-0 and leading the Sunshine State Conference. Since then the Tars have lost four of five, the latest a 87-73 loss to Florida Tech that was not even that close.
The Tars defense that was so good for the first half of the season has given up 80+ points in three of the last five contests. The loose balls are going the way of the other team and on this night FIT was red hot from 3-point land.
Only two Tars player's scored in double figures. Kyle McClanahan led the way with 15 points and Adam Allen had 12 before fouling out, while Dave Diakite added nine. The Tars shot 54 percent for the game, but made just 7-24 from the 3-point line. The Tars were not any better at the foul line where they shot 43 percent (6-14.) The Tars did win the rebounding battle 38-28. They had 12 assists and 19 turnovers. With the loss the Tars dropped to 15-6 overall and 7-4 in the SSC.
The Panthers gained a split in the season series with a 3-point barrage. FIT shot 56 percent (15-27) from the 3-point line. They shot 47 percent from the floor and were 67 percent (18-27) at the free throw line. The Panthers had 15 assists and 10 turnovers. They were paced by Jermaine Jackson with 20 points, Julius Reed had 19 and nine rebounds, while Chris Carter had 18 points. Randy Echols had 10 off the bench. With the win the Panthers improved to 11-10 overall and 4-7 in the SSC.
The Tars would lead 4-3 in the first two minutes but nothing would go right the rest of the night. FIT would go on a run and lead 19-11 with 11:35 in the opening half. The game would see the Tars pecking away at the lead in the opening half and it was between seven and nine points until the Panthers would go on a 9-0 spurt to take a 44-28 halftime lead. The Tars came out and got a dunk from Diakite to open the second half but it would be all Panthers the rest of the way. The Tars would out score FIT by 10 points in the last minute and a half to end up losing by 14.
The Tars will travel to Lynn on Saturday to take on the Fighting Knights. Tip time is set for 4 PM. As always tune in to RollinsSports.com and 91.5 WPRK Winter Park.

The Rollins Tars needed five extra minutes on Saturday to do so, but they stopped a two game losing streak and completed a season sweep of the Eckerd College Tritons at the Macarthur Center.  69-66 was the final score as the Tars improved to 15-4 (7-2 SSC.) The Tritons dropped to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in the SSC with the loss.
Dave Diakite paced the Tars with 21 points on the day to go along with eight rebounds. The Tars had 15 assists and 10 turnovers.
The Tritons four game win streak came to an end at the hands of the Tars. Darrien Mack led Eckerd with 22 points to lead all scorers. Mack also had nine rebounds and four assists.  Woody Taylor added 13 points and nine rebounds.  They shot 35 percent from the field and hit 37 percent (7-19) from 3-point land.  The Tritons shot 75 percent (21-28) at the foul line.  The Tritons won the rebounding battle 42-35.  Eckerd had 14 assists and 12 turnovers.

The Tars would stretch the lead to 29-18 with 3:41 in the half. The Tritons would then close the half on a 10-2 run to cut the Tars lead to three (31-28) at the break.
The Tars would stretch the lead to six at the 14:33 mark. Eckerd would have an answer and would ultimately take the lead 51-50 eight minutes later.  After a pair of ties and a pair of lead changes Jeff Dirkin would nail two free throws to make it 54-53 with 3:58 to go.
The next two minutes would saw both teams go ice cold and not be able to score. The Tritons would then get a three from Alex Bodney to go up 56-54. Nine seconds later Diakite would answer with a three of his own to silence the Triton faithful.   Malcolm Bruner would give Eckerd a 58-57 lead with a minute to go after a lay up.
After a McClanahan runner in the lane with 38 seconds left the Tars would lead 59-58. Mack then split a pair of free throws for the Tritons on the next possession. The Tars would have a chance to win it but a Jeff Dirkin three would not go to force overtime.
The Tars scored the first three points of the OT and would outscore the Tritons 10-7 in the extra session.   The Tars had one field goal and made eight free throws in the overtime.  Rollins improved to 2-0 in overtime games on the season, while the Tritons fell to 0-2.
