The Rollins Tars suffered a tough 70-66 loss to the Tampa Spartans at Warden Arena on Wednesday. A tough first half would be the demise of the Tars on this night.
Rollins fell to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Tars split two meetings with the Spartans on the season. Rollins was led by four players in double figures on the night. Kyle McClanahan led the way with 18 points and also had five assists. Dave Diakite and Mitch Woods each added 11, while Chris Uhle netted 10. The Tars shot 40 percent as a team and hit on 37 percent (10-27) from the 3-point line. The Tars uncharacteristically struggled at the foul line (64 percent.) They had 12 assists and turned the ball over 11 times.
Tampa improved to 16-6 (3-6 SSC.) The Spartans returned the favor after the Tars started the new year a month ago by handing UT it's first loss of the season. Anthony Griffis had a big game for Tampa on Wednesday. He had 25 points to lead all scorers and also grabbed eight rebounds. Vincent Cornu had 13 and hauled in seven rebounds. Tampa shot 38 percent for the game and hit 9 of 25 (36 percent) from the 3-point line. The Spartans shot 75 percent (21-28) at the foul line. The Spartans dominated the boards 42-31. They had 13 assists and turned the ball over 14 times.
Tampa opened up a 10 point lead (23-13) in the game's first 14 minutes. The Tars would chip away and cut the Spartans lead to 29-25 after a McClanahan three at the first half buzzer.
The second half would start with the Tars making a mini run to tie the game on a Diakite 3-ball with 13:55 to go. Brett Chance would give the Tars a three point lead (43-40) with 11:11 to go. The Tars would lead by as many as six at the 9:35 mark but they would then go cold and fall short.
The Tars will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Florida Tech at Warden Arena. TIp time is set for 7:30 PM.
