Tars Suffer Rare Loss To Sharks Wednesday.

The Rollins Tars have owned the Nova Southeastern Sharks in recent memory, but Wednesday night they fell to Nova Southeastern 63-56 at the Don Taft University Center.
With the loss Rollins (8-8 2-5 SSC) has now lost five of six.  The Tars offense that has scored more than 100 points four times this season has now failed to score 60 points in consecutive games.  Connor McKim led the Tars with 14 points and eight rebounds in 30 minutes of action- while Jeff Merton also scored 14 points. Merton joined the 1,000 point club with his first basket of the game. He is the 39th player in Rollins history to eclipse 1,000 points.  Eric Castaneda added nine points in the defeat.
Shooting was a problem for Rollins in this one. They only shot 37 percent from the floor in the loss- they went just 11-34 (32 percent) from the 3-point line. At the free throw line where the Tars have been solid much of the year they shot 54 percent (7-13) on Wednesday.   They had 15 assists and a season low 9 turnovers.
Nova Southeastern (5-10 2-6 SSC) was paced by Harrison Goodrick with 18 points and eight rebounds.  Troy Spear was 5 of 10 from the 3-point line on his way to 17 points- while Nikita Orap added 12.
The Sharks shot 44 percent as a team- and went 9-25 (36 percent) from the 3-point line.  At the free throw line the Sharks shot 71 percent (10-14.)  NSU crushed the Tars on the boards 38-28.  They had 19 assists and 11 turnovers.
NSU got off to a quick lead early but Rollins battled and took the lead (10-9) after a Castaneda 3-pointer at the 14:29 mark of the opening half.  The Sharks would respond with a 10-0 run of their own and took a nine point lead (19-10.)  The Tars got to within four (19-15) but another NSU spurt would give them a 12 point lead (31-19) with 3:26 in the half.  After a McKim 3-pointer, Goodrick would respond for the Sharks and they would take a 12 point (34-22) halftime lead.
The Tars came out a new team to start the second half as they would go on a 13-2 run and after a Nils Lehmann basket they would be within one (36-35) at the 15:40 mark.  Lehmann would have a chance to knot the game at 36 but Lehmann missed the free throw.  The Sharks would get the lead back out to seven before the Tars would answer and get to within two (44-42) after a Philpott old fashioned 3-point play.  The Tars would again have a chance to tie the game, this time at 44 on the ensuing possession but Castaneda would only make one of two free throws.  NSU would stretch lead back to 12 after a 11-0 run and the Tars would battle uphill the rest of the way.  They would get to within five a couple times, and get to within four (60-56) after a McKim layup with 21 seconds to go but NSU would seal it at the free throw line.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Saint Leo. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM and you can catch all the action on the Geico Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.

The Rollins coaching staff continues to search for the right combinations and Wednesday was no different.  Lehmann got the start in place of Jack Fleming.  The teams would go back and forth in the early going. A pair of Lehmann free throws would tie the game at 15 halfway thru the opening half.  The Spartans would run off the next 10 points and lead 25-15.  The Tars would go on a 16-5 run to take a 31-30 lead after a McKim 3-pointer at the 4:06 mark of the opening half. That would be the last points Rollins would score in the half as Tampa would close the half on a 12-0 run to take a 42-31 lead at the break.
The Tars would come out with a little energy and would get the ball in the post to Mike Bedulskis early in the second half. Rollins would get to within five at the 15:15 mark.  The Spartans would answer with another spurt, this time stretching the lead to 14 (61-47) at the 9:21 mark.  Rollins was down by 12 (64-52) at the seven minute mark before they went on a 10-0 run, a pair of Merton 3-pointer's and a Merton jumper to cut it to two (64-62.)  That is as close as the Tars would get though as they would drop a fourth straight.
