The Rollins Tars mission going into Saturday's meeting with Florida Tech was to get a season series split. Mission Accomplished! The Tars came away with a thrilling 91-82 win at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Both teams are now 11-8 on the season. The Tars improve to 5-5 in the SSC- while the Panthers fall to 4-6.
Jeff Merton led five Tars in double figures in the victory. Merton drilled six 3-pointer's and pumped in a game high 28 points- Sam Philpott added 20- while Joey Galvis stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points- eight rebounds- six assists and four steals- Connor McKim and Jack Fleming netted 10 points each.
The Tars shot 47 percent as a team- they went 13-31 (42 percent) from the 3-point line- The Tars were nearly perfect at the free throw line where they went 18 of 19 (95 percent.) Rollins won the rebounding battle 38-36. They had 20 assists and eight turnovers in the contest.
The Panthers had three players tally double figures on the night. Sam Daniel led the way with 27 points- Jordan Majors had 18- and Patrick Anderson added 11. FIT shot 44 percent from the floor- went 13-33 (39 percent) from the 3-point line- and shot 81 percent (13-16) at the free throw line. The Panthers had 23 assists and 11 turnovers.
FIT led early but the Tars would take a seven point lead (13-6) after a Nils Lehmann layup at the 14:25 mark of the opening half. Down 15-8 the Panthers would score the next 10 points capped by a Daniels layup at the 10:50 mark of the first half. The Panthers would maintain the lead for the rest of the half and take a four point lead (36-32) into the locker room.
The Tars would fight back and retake the lead (47-45) after a Galvis 3-pointer with just over 15 minutes to go. The Tars would stretch the lead to 10 (57-47) after a Merton basket with 12:25 to go. The lead would grow to 13 after a McKim 3-pointer at the 10:09 mark. The Panthers would battle back once again and get to within five (70-65) after a pair of Daniel free throws at the 6:10 mark. The Tars would maintain the lead the rest of the way and secure a third straight victory.
