In a game that the Rollins Tars led for most of the way, it was a atrocious night at the free throw line (9-20 for 45 percent) and a sub par night on the boards (36-28) that would cost Rollins in a 70-67 loss to the Fighting Knights of Lynn at the Count and Countess D'Hoernle Sport and Cultural Center . Both teams sit at 7-7 on the season after Wednesday's game. The Knights improve to 1-3 on the season in conference play, while the Tars drop to 2-3 in the league.
Two players led Rollins on the evening. Alex Blessig had 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. Scott Schuette added 12 points, as he scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game. The Tars shot 49 percent from the field in the loss. They shot 39 percent at the 3-pointl line and 45 percent at the foul line. Rollins had 17 assists and turned the ball over 12 times.
Lynn had a pair of players score 18 in getting there first conference win of the season. Haki Stampley and Aaron Harrison were joined in double figures by Kaleb Clyburn (13) and Fred Landers (10.) Harrison led the Knights with 11 rebounds. The Knights shot 43 percent from the field and 48 percent from the 3-point line. They easily won the rebounding battle (36-28.) Lynn had 16 assists and 12 turnovers.
Rollins led for much of the first half. Adam Allen got them off to a quick start and they lead the entire way except for a brief 16-16 tie. It would be 30-29 Tars after a Blessig bucket right before the intermission. That would be the Rollins lead at the break.
The Tars would stretch that lead to as many as seven (41-34) with just over 14 minutes to go before Lynn would go on a 8-0 run to give the Knights the lead. The game would see-saw back and forth. After a Clyburn 3-pointer the game would be tied at 55. The Tars would regain the lead (57-55) on a Dirkin stick back with 4:24 left. Josh Soto would hit a three to spark a 7-0 Fighting Knights run that would give them a five point lead (62-57) with 30 seconds left. A Schuette 3-pointer would cut the lead to two (62-60) The Knights looked to have the game warped up leading 67-62 before another Schuette 3-pointer would again cut the lead to two (67-65). Soto would split a pair and the Tars would have a chance down three (68-65) but would not be able to retain possession after a turnover on a pass that looked to be tipped. After a brief discussion the ball would be given to the Knights and they would inbound to Clyburn whose two free throws would "ice it."
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they head to the "Shark tank" to take on Nova Southeastern. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
