A Look Around The SSC: Lynn University

Lynn University is an American, private, non profit university in Boca Raton, Florida founded in 1962.  The school opened as Marymount College, a woman's junior college founded by the Religious Sacred Heart of Mary.  In 1971 the school was placed under the control of a lay board.  Donald E.Ross was named President at the time.  In 1974 the school's name was changed to the College of Boca Raton. In 1986 the school was granted accreditation level two. At the time it was only a two year program. In 1988 this was raised to level three and the school transformed from a two to a four year program.  In 1991 the school's name was changed to Lynn University to honor its benefactors, the Lynn family.
Donald E.Ross retired after 35 years in 2006. His son Kevin M.Ross then took over for him.  According to the Chronicle of Higher education Donald Ross received a total compensation of 5, 738,422 which was the highest of any university President. This being in his final year of service.
In October 2012 Lynn hosted the presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney concerning foreign policy.  The debate was held at the Performing Arts Center and moderated by journalist Bob Schieffer of CBS News.
Today the University has students from nearly all 50 states, and approximately 80 nations. 24 percent of students come from counties outside the United States (percentages includes students with dual citizenship.)  the largest percentage of any university in the southeastern United States.
Lynn's athletic teams are known as the Fighting Knights.  The school has won a total of 21 NCAA and NAIA national championships and 30 Sunshine State Conference Titles.  Men's varsity sports are basketball, baseball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. Woman's sports are basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, softball, tennis and volleyball.  Lacrosse will be added for the 2014 season.
On July 17,2007 Lynn was vacated of it's 2005 Division II softball championship due to extra benefits given to two players.  The NCAA found that coach Thomas Macera gave the two softball players cash payments totaling more than 3,000 dollars.  Lynn was also placed on probation for two years.
A few notable alum of Lynn include Jean Alexandre (Midfielder San Jose Earthquakes,) Scott Gordon (Defender Fort Lauderdale Strikers,) John McCormack (Head Baseball Coach at Florida Atlantic.)
