The Rollins Tars open the 2014-15 basketball season with a trip to Atlanta to take part in the SSC/SIAC crossover.
The Tars will open with a 7 PM showdown with host Clark-Atlanta. The Tars are coming off a 14-13 season a year ago. They will be coming into this season with a "chip on there shoulder" after being picked to finish in a tie for seventh in the SSC. Last year's top scorer Mitch Woods has moved on. The Tars leading scorer a year ago was a first team All SSC player. Also departed are Adam Allen (9.4 ppg) and Lukas Winegarner. Winegarner was lost midway thru last season with a broken foot.
The Tars will return Alex Blessig (10.8 ppg,) along with Chris Uhle and Jeff Dirkin. Uhle put up 9.3 a contest a year ago, while Dirkin scored 7.5 points and led the team grabbing 6.1 rebounds a night. Scott Schuette (6.3 ppg) will look to find his shooting stroke in 2014. James Farrell will see some more minutes in the backcourt. Sharif Almulla will return after missing much of last year with an ankle injury.
The Tars will also welcome some newcomers. Kyle Koszuta, Mike Bedulskis, and Jeff Merton are among them. The Tars were a 106-61 winner over Brunell (London) in their lone exhibition contest.
Redshirt freshman Sam Phillipott led the way in that one. Almulla added 16-while Uhle netted 13.
Clark Atlanta is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and is coming off a 15-11 season (11-7 SIAC.) The Panthers are picked second behind perennial power Benedict.
The Panthers also lost there top three scorers from a season ago. Derek Harper is back after scoring 8.3 points a game as a freshman. Earl Lawrence and Kenneth Green each return as seniors after starting every game there junior season's.
Like the Tars the Panthers had one exhibition game. They were a 92-69 loser to DI Samford. Lawrence led the way with 17 in the exhibition contest. Cornell Barnett added 13 points and six rebounds- while Johnell Young netted 10. The Panthers did out rebound Samford 42-35. They had trouble taking care of the ball though turning it over 22 times.
