The Rollins College Tars had the lead late but could not hang on Saturday. Ultimately it would be the Golden Bulls of Johnson C.Smith who would go on to the 64-59 win at the Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte,North Carolina. For the second straight day the Tars did not have enough in the closing minutes.
Eight different players scored for Rollins (2-3) in what turned out to be there third straight defeat and second in as many days in the JCSU Tip-Off Classic. Scott Schuette led the way for Rollins with 14 points on the day. Chris Uhle chipped in 11-while Alex Blessig and Sharif Almulla scored 10 each in the loss. The Tars shot 40 percent (23-57) on the day. They only knocked down 30 percent (8-27) of the shots they took from the 3-point line. The Tars only got to the foul line six times, making five (83 percent.) They had 14 assists and 11 turnovers.
The Golden Bulls (2-2) won for the second time in as many days. They were paced by 15 points from Joshua Linson. Stedmon Lemon notched 13- while Markell Lotharp chipped in 11. The Golden Bulls shot 41 percent for the game (24-59.) They shot 35 percent (8-23) from the 3-point line. JCSU shot just 57 percent (8-14) from the free throw line. The Golden Bulls dominated the glass, as they out rebounded Rollins 43-29. The Golden Bulls had 17 assists and 15 turnovers.
The game got off to a slow start as both teams looked sluggish out of the gate. A Uhle 3-pointer gave the Tars a 6-4 lead early on. The Golden Bulls would answer with a 14-2 run, as they would take a 16-8 lead with 11:11 to go in the opening half. The Tars would fight back and knot the game at 22. The Tars would take a five point lead (29-24) into the locker room after a Blessig steal and reverse lay up right at the halftime buzzer.
The Tars would extend the lead to eight (39-31) four minutes into the second half. The Golden Bulls would come back and go on a 10-2 run to again tie the game, this time at 41 with 11 minutes to go. Rollins would then run off the next nine points and would lead 50-41 after a Blessig 3-pointer. The Golden Bulls would then erase that deficit in a hurry. Linson would hit four consecutive 3-pointer's for the Golden Bulls and give them a seven point lead (64-57.) The Tars would get a late basket from Blessig but it would not be enough as they would fall 64-59.
