The Rollins College Tars (0-2) may not be the most talented group that they have had in recent memory but they proved on Saturday in the Las Vegas Tip Off Classic that they will gave you every ounce of energy they have for all 40 minutes.
After being down 17 in the second half the Tars would ultimately have a chance to win the game late but would ultimately fall 55-54 to Saint Mary's (Texas) and go 0-2 in Las Vegas. Mitch Woods led the Tars with 12 points. Alex Blessig added nine points to go along with four rebounds. Jeff Dirkin and Chris Uhle each had seven points for Rollins. The Tars are 0-2 for the first time since the 1994-95 season. The Tars shot 38 percent (15-40) on the evening. They were 7 of 18 from 3-point range. The Tars struggled at the foul line where they were 17-28 (61 percent.) Rollins had nine assists and 17 turnovers.
The Rattlers improved to 1-1 on the season with the win. Fred Wilson and Justin Alexander each had 12 points to lead the Rattlers. Marvin Whitt also scored in double figures, posting 11 points. The Rattlers shot 46 percent on the night. They went 5-16 from the 3-point line. For the second straight night the Rattlers really struggled at the foul line. They were 16-28 (57 percent) for the game. Saint Mary's out rebounded the Tars 31-28. The Rattlers had 12 assists and 20 turnovers.
Rollins got off to a quick start in this one and lead 16-9 nine minutes in. The Tars would then go ice cold and a 16-9 lead would turn into a 27-18 deficit. The Tars would close the half on a 7-3 mini spurt to cut the Rattlers deficit to five (30-25) at the intermission.
The Rattlers would jump on the Tars again early in the second half and stretch the lead to 17 (43-26) with 13:11 to go. The Tars would then force several turnovers and would be assisted by a few missed free throws and with 2:13 to go a Mitch Woods lay up would cut the Tars deficit to three (53-50.) The Rattlers would stretch the lead to five at 55-50 on a pair of free throws. Alex Blessig would get a bucket, the Tars a defensive stop and then a pair of Mitch Woods free throws would make it 55-54 with 48 ticks remaining. After another defensive stop the Tars would regain possession with 22 seconds left. Scott Schuette would have a shot to win the game for the Tars but it would not fall and the Tars would come up empty in Vegas.
