The Rollins College Tars had two droughts of six minutes or longer and never could recover in a 65-42 loss to the Icabods of Washburn College on Friday night in the opening game of the Las Vegas Tip Off Classic at the Doolittle Center.
Chris Uhle lead the Tar attack with nine points, three rebounds and three blocks. Mitch Woods added six points and four rebounds, while Jeff Dirkin and Scott Schuette had five each.
Alex North had 19 to pace Washburn. Christian Ulsaker had 15 as the Icabods other double digit scorer.
The Tars would start the game with a six minute drought before a Mitch Woods 3-pointer with 14 minutes to go in the opening half would cut the Icabods lead to 9-4. Washburn would lead 15-9 a couple minutes later. They would then run off a 12-3 run to take a 27-12 lead. That lead would be 17 (37-20) at the break.
The Tars second half would start much like the first did. It would be 9:26 off the clock in the second half before the first field goal and the Icabods would lead by 27 (51-24.) The Tars would cut the deficit to 20 (56-36) with 5:35 to go, but that is as close as they would get.
The Tars (0-1) shot just 25 percent (13-52) on the night. They were a frigid 11 percent (3-26) from the 3-point line. Rollins made 68 percent (13 of 19) at the foul line. The Tars had 7 assists and 22 turnovers.
The Icabods (1-0) shot 43 percent from the floor and made good on 50 percent (9-18) from the 3-point line. They made just 56 percent (10-18) at the foul line. The Icabods crushed the Tars on the boards 44-33. They had 19 assists and 18 turnovers.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday night when they take on Saint Mary's (Texas) at 6 PM at the Doolittle Center. You can catch all the Tars action on the Tars sports network at RollinsSports.com and worldwide at RollinsSports.TV. and in Winter Park on 91.5 FM WPRK.
