The Florida Southern Moccasins (21-5 12-4) SSC gained a share of the Sunshine State Conference regular season title with a 76-73 win over the Rollins Tars at Jenkins Fieldhouse on Saturday night.
The Tars (17-9 9-7 SSC) had two shots to tie the game late but Adam Allen and Dave Diakite were not able to connect as time expired. Kyle McClanahan led the Tars with 21 points on the evening (19 in the second half.) Mitch Woods went seven of seven from the field including three 3-pointers to tally 17 points, while Dave Diakite added 12 points and eight rebounds. The Tars shot 58.3 percent (28-48) for the game. They nailed 11-23 3-pointer's (47.8 percent) and were six of seven (85.7 percent) at the foul line. The Tars had 17 assists and 14 turnovers.
The Mocs improved to 21-5 on the season and 12-4 in the SSC. The Mocs got a share of the Sunshine State Conference title with Saint Leo. Seth Evans paced the Mocs with a game high 25 points including 11 of 11 at the free throw line. Dominic Lane added 19. Lamar McKinght and Brett Bailey added nine each. The Mocs shot 42 percent for the game, they were 10 of 24 from the 3-point line. The Mocs were a solid 81.5 percent (22-27) at the foul line. FSC won the rebounding battle 32-22. They had 13 assists and 11 turnovers.
It would be the Tars that would get off to a quick start and lead 8-2 in the early going. FSC would cut that lead to 12-11 but the Tars would run off the next seven points and lead 19-11 halfway thru the opening half. The Tars would maintain that lead and lead 36-29 at the half.
The Tars would push the lead to nine early in the second. The Mocs would then go on a 9-0 run to take a 45-43 lead. The Mocs would stretch that lead to nine (59-50) with 7:42 left. The Tars would battle back and cut the lead to two (65-63) at the 3:38 mark. The Mocs would then stretch the lead back out to seven. Chance would hit a 3-pointer and McClanahan would convert a conventional 3-point play to cut it to one (74-73) with 34 seconds left. Evans would hit both free throws with 16 seconds left to stretch the lead back to three. Allen would miss a three, Diakite would grab the rebound and miss a three of his own a time expired.
The Tars will head to the SSC tournament as the #5 seed and face #4 seed Florida Tech at noon on Friday at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
