The 17th ranked Rollins Tars (14-3 6-1 SSC) could not recover after a horrid start and fell to the Saint Leo Lions 79-54 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center Saturday.
For the second straight game the Tars had a lackluster first half. After nine and a half minutes in this one, the Tars found themselves in a 27-2 hole that they could not dig out of. The Tars got to within 13 in the second half but that is as close as they would get. Only two Rollins players managed double figures Saturday. Kyle McClanahan led the Tars with 15 points, while Adam Allen netted 12. Jeff Dirkin had eight points and eight rebounds for the cold shooting Tars.
The Tars shot a very uncharacteristic 34 percent (19-56) from the field and hit just 26 percent (6-23) of their attempts from 3-point range. The Tars shot 71 percent (10-14) at the foul line. They had just 10 assists and turned it over 13 times.
The Lions improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the SSC. Jerrel Harris poured in a game high 26 points, including six of 10 at the 3-point line. Marcus Ruh also had a big game, scoring 25 points. Trent Thomas rounded out the double figure scorers with 10. The Lions shot 52 percent (27-52) from the field and were deadly from 3-point range where they shot 58 percent (14-24.) The Lions shot 69 percent (11-16) at the foul line. Leo won the battle of the boards 35-32. The Lions had 16 assists and 13 turnovers. The win was the Lions second straight over the Tars after a 28 game losing streak ended a year ago.
The Tars will be back in action Wednesday when they host Florida Southern. The Tars and Mocs are currently tied for the conference lead. Tip time at Warden Arena is set for 7:30 PM. You can catch all the action on WPRK Winter Park and worldwide on RollinsSports.com
