The Rollins Tars will travel to West Palm Beach to battle the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic at Rubin Arena on Saturday. Tip time is set for 4 PM. You can catch all the action live on the Geico Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and in Winter Park on 91.5 FM WPRK.
The last time out, Rollins got a huge win both in the conference standings and in the South region rankings. The Tars defeated Saint Leo 81-72. The Lions were the only team in the conference Rollins had not beaten yet this season. With the win The Tars improved to 20-7 and 12-4 in the SSC. A Barry win over Eckerd on Saturday would give the Tars a share of the conference regular season title.
In the victory over Saint Leo, in which Tom Klusman won his 20th game for the 13th time as the Rollins head coach Jeff Merton and Sharif Almulla scored 20 points a piece to lead the way- Sam Philpott contributed 14 off the bench- while James Ferrell added 10 and five assists.
The Tars are scoring 83 points a game as a team, while allowing 74.8 a night. The Tars have led the conference all season in both field goal percentage (49 percent-) as well as free throw shooting (78 percent.) The last two games have seen Rollins struggle at the foul line. They have also been solid all year from the 3-point line (shooting 38 percent.)
Merton leads the Rollins box score at 15.7 points a game- Philpott gets better every game and is now second on the team in scoring at 12.6 a night- Almulla seems to have broken out of his late season shooting slump in the last two games, and now averages 12.2 a contest- while Clark is scoring 10 a game.
Palm Beach Atlantic (12-13) comes in on a three game losing slide. They did defeat the Tars 88-86 in Winter Park back on January 16th. Wednesday night they were a 94-79 loser to Florida Tech. It is the first time since December the Sailfish are below .500 on the season.
They got a career- high tying 20 points from Malek Barber to lead the way against Florida Tech- Shavano Cooper added 15 points and 11 rebounds- while Milos Kostic chipped in 14.
The Sailfish come into Saturday averaging 79.4 a game on the offensive end. At the defensive end, they have struggled (giving up 82.9 a game.) PBA shoots 44 percent as a team from the floor.
Bakari Warthen leads the season box score for PBA at 17 points a night- Micheal Simpson is second on the team (10.4 a game-) followed by Barber (10.2 a contest-) and Cooper (10 a game.)
