The Rollins College Tars (4-0) knocked off the Gallitos of Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras (0-2) 81-70 on Wednesday afternoon at Warden Arena. With the win Rollins completed a 3-0 home stand.
The Tars were led by Myk Brown who netted 21 points to lead the way. Jeremy Sharpe added 17 on the strength of 5 for 9 from the three point line. Dave Diakite added 12 points and six rebounds, while Brett Chance chipped in 11 off the Tars bench.
Hector Maldanado led all scorers with 33 points, including 9 of 20 from three point land. 20 of Maldanado's 33 were in the opening half. Ramon Matos also tallied 14 for the UPRP. Joseph Vegerano added 14 assists.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well especially in the opening half. It was Piedras who opened up an eight point lead seven minutes in. After even basketball for the next couple minutes the Tars would go on a run of their own and take a 21-20 lead after back to back Jeff Dirkin buckets. The Gallitos would make it 39-31 behind the hot shooting of Maldanado. Then it would be Myk Brown's turn, the Tars would take a 44-41 halftime lead after Brown would score the last ten points of the half.
The second half would begin with Piedras scoring the first five points to regain the lead. The Tars would answer with a 10-0 run sparked by a Sharpe three. The lead would grow to as many as 14 as the Tars would cruise to the 11 point win.
Rollins shot 58 percent in the game and 55 percent (11-20) from long range. The Tars won the battle of the boards 30-23. Piedras shot 49 percent from the field The Gallitos ended the game 14-34 (31 percent) from long range. They were just 5 of 20 in the second half. Piedras had 20 turnovers, while the Tars had 19. The Tars shot 71 percent at the foul line as opposed to 57 percent for Rio-Piedras.
The Tars will take a break for the Thanksgiving holiday and jump right into conference play when they head to the Bob Martinez Sports Center to face Tampa November 30th.
