The tenth ranked Rollins College Tars (7-1) suffered a 80-61 loss to the Vikings of Western Washington (11-1) in the opening day of the Great Western Shootout in Las Vegas,Nevada. The Tars were doomed by 16 turnovers and 15 missed free throws (27-42) in the loss. Rollins was led by 14 points from David Diakite. The UCF transfer was 7 of 12 at the foul line in the game. Myk Brown was the only other Tar in double figures with ten points. Rollins shot 40 percent (16-40) from the floor and struggled from the 3-point line (2-16).
The Vikings who reeled off a ninth straight win and stopped the Tar win streak at seven in the process had three players in double numbers. John Allen paced the Vikings with 20 points including 4 of 8 from the 3-point line. Zach Hennifin posted a double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds), while Rory Blache chipped in 12. The Vikings shot 45 percent from the field and were 14-28 (50 percent) from three point territory. The Vikings were 10-13 at the foul line and out rebounded the Tars 39-30.
The first three minutes were played pretty evenly, a pair of Brett Chance free throws tied the game at five in the early going. Six turnovers by the Tars would spark a 17-2 run for the Vikings as Western Washington would take a 22-7 lead. The Tars would go nearly seven minutes without a field goal before a Scott Schuette jumper would make it 22-9 nearly nine minutes in. The Tars would cut the lead to ten on a pair of occasions, the last making the halftime score 38-28 in favor of the home standing Vikings.
The Vikings would roll in the second half. The lead would grow to as many as 25 before the Tars would cut into it late. The second day of the tournament will be tomorrow.
