The Rollins College Tars (8-1) hold off a pesky squad from Mansfield (PA) to advance to the championship game of the 38th Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament. After trailing for much of the first half the Tars used a late run to take a 34-30 lead at the half. They would control much of the second half and hang on for the 71-61 win at Warden Arena.
Three Tars scored in double figures on the afternoon. Dave Diakite led the Tars with a career high 23 points on the game. Kyle McClanahan added 17 and Mitch Woods chipped in 11 for the Tars. The Tars shot the three exceptionally well in the second half and turned up the defensive intensity. The numbers were almost identical in the opening half. The Tars were 12-24 from the field, while the Mounties went 12-25. Each team was 3 of 11 from the 3-point line. The Tars shot 50 percent overall for the game and were a solid 20-22 at the foul line. The Tars also won the rebounding battle 29-26.
The Mounties dropped to 2-6 on the season with the loss. Joe Bell led all scorers with 26 points and eight rebounds. The only other Mountie in double figures was Chuck Harper, who tallied 11 points and seven rebounds. Mansfield shot 23-52 on the afternoon and went six of 21 from the 3-point line.
The Tars will face Shaw University (NC) tomorrow at 2 PM in the title game. The Bears were a 79-64 winner over Flagler Saturday. Flagler and Mansfield will battle in the consolation game at noon.
