The red hot Rollins Tars (7-1) winners of seven straight look to do something they have not done in a few years this weekend. The Tars will host the 38th Winter Park Rotary Tangerine tournament Saturday and Sunday. Rollins will look to win the tournament for the first time since 2008. Shaw and Flagler will meet in the other contest Saturday.
The Tars are coming off a clean sweep of the Rollins Las Vegas Classic. They defeated Abeline Christian 65-61 and knocked off Cameron 88-76. Kyle McClanahan had an outstanding tournament and was named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week. The Winter Park native had 24 points, five rebounds and five assists in the opener. The next day against Cameron he had 20 points, seven assists and seven steals. McClanahan leads the Tars in scoring at 14.4 points a game. He leads the SSC in assists at 5.8 a game and also is tops in field goal percentage at 59 percent on the season. Three other Tars average double figures led by Brett Chance at 11.8 a game. Dave Diakite puts up 11.4 a game and Adam Allen nets 10 a night. The Tars average allowing just over 60 points a game. Offensively they put up 72.6 and the Tars have dominated the glass this season at +7.4.
Mansfield comes in with a 2-5 record. They were a 79-50 loser to Indiana (PA) last time out. Joe Bell led the Mounties in the last contest and leads them on the season in scoring. Bell is averaging 17.4 points and 9.9 rebounds a night. Two other Mounties, Chuck Harper (12.0 ppg) and Onyema Utti nets 10 a contest.
The Mounties put up 69 points a game but have struggled on the defensive end, giving up 74. They shoot 44 percent as a team (32 percent from the 3-point line.) The Mounties have made two other trips to the Tangerine tournament and have a record of 1-3. The win came in 2003 when they split. They were swept in the 2005.
