The sixth ranked Barry Buccaneers were a 86-73 winner over the Rollins Tars in Miami Shores,Fla. at the Health and Sports Center Wednesday evening. With the win Barry stayed in a tie with Florida Southern at 10-1 in the SSC. The Bucs improved to 19-2 overall. Rollins fell for the 11th straight time, going to 7-16 on the season and 0-11 in the SSC.
The Bucs had four players in double figures in the win. Yunio Barruetta scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to continue his claim as the SSC Player Of The Year thus far. Arie Williams added 14 points in 20 minutes off the Barry bench- while Juan Ferrales and Savad Gardner contributed 12 points each. The Bucs shot a solid 53 percent (32-60) from the floor, this included shooting at a 39 percent clip (12-31) from the 3-point line. The Bucs shot 71 percent (10-14) from the free throw line. They had 24 assists and nine turnovers.
The short-handed Tars who were playing without starting Center Chris Uhle (ankle) and James Ferrell (broken thumb) were led by four players in double figures as well. Jeff Merton (15 points) scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game- Scott Schuette tied his season high with 14 points- Sharif Almulla added 13- while Alex Blessig chipped in 12 in the defeat. The Tars shot 48 percent (26-54) for the game. They shot 42 percent (10-24) from the 3-point line. The Tars struggled at the foul line, going 11-17 (65 percent.) This included missing five front ends of one and one's. The Tars edged Barry on the boards 33-32. They had 14 assists and 10 turnovers.
The Tars got off to a good start in the game's first four minutes and led 12-8. Barry would then score the next six points before a pair of Jeff Dirkin free throws tied the game at 14. Barry then took control with a 19-7 run to open up a 13 point lead (33-20) with 7:42 until halftime. The Tars would get to within six after a 3-pointer by Almulla and a Merton jumper but the Bucs would close the half strong and take a 45-31 lead into the locker room.
The Tars would fight hard and get to within eight (54-46) at the 13:19 mark but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way. Barry would lead by as many as 20 and cruise to the victory.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday when they host the Tritons of Eckerd. Tip time is set for 4 PM at Warden Arena. the Tritons beat the Tars in overtime in the first meeting.
