For much of the last several years the Rollins Tars have been at the top of the Sunshine State Conference Standings with Saint Leo not far behind. Whenever the two teams met, for a span of 26 consecutive tries at one point the Tars would come out on top. This year is different for both teams. As both come into Saturday in dire need of a win. The Tars and Lions are currently the bottom two teams in the SSC.
Rollins (7-14 0-9 SSC) has come close but can not seem to finish a conference win. The first meeting with Saint Leo was a 57-54 overtime loss. The Tars are coming off a sluggish performance in a 86-65 non conference loss to Palm Beach Atlantic. Jeff Merton had 21- and- Sharif Almulla added 12 in the loss.
Alex Blessig leads the Rollins box score putting up 10.7 points a game. The junior is due for a breakout game as he has been very quiet scoring wise during the losing skid. Blessig also dishes out 3.9 assists- and- gets 2.2 steals a night. Chris Uhle adds 10.3 points a game to go along with 1.9 blocks a contest which is third best in the league. Merton has upped to his average to 10.2 a night, as he has scored 20+ points in the last two contests and is averaging 15 a night in the last three contests. Rollins is eighth in scoring at 67.8 points a game- while they are second on defense allowing just 67.6 a night.
Saint Leo ((11-11 3-7 SSC) has dropped four straight. The most recent loss was a 61-54 setback to Florida Tech at the Clemente Center Wednesday. The Lions had three players in double figures in that one. Ron Foxx poured in a game high 21 points- Cale Girten contributed 13- and- Devin Crisosto added 10.
Foxx leads the box score for the Lions with a league fifth best 15.7 point average- he also grabs 5.5 rebounds a night. Crisosto is the only other Leo player averaging double figures at 10.2 per game.
The Lions are best in the league on defense, where they give up just 62 points a game- on the other end they are last in offense where they score just 64.4 a night.
