The Rollins Tars and Puerto Rico Mayaguez Tarzans did battle inside Warden Arena on Tuesday. Rollins would come out with the 81-53 win to secure the team's first home win of the season- and- snap a brief two game losing streak. With the win Rollins improved to 3-2- while the Tarzans fell to 0-4 with the loss.
Rollins had a trio of players in double figures paced by Jakobi Bonner who scored 19 points on the night. Hutton Yenor scored 15- and- Trevor Recio was one rebounds shy of a double-double with 14 points- and- nine boards. The Tars shot 46 percent as a team- 36 percent (10-28) from the 3-point line- and- 76 percent (19-25) at the free throw line. The Tars won the rebounding battle 44-37. They had 19 assists- and- 12 turnovers as a team.
The Tarzans were led by Ricardo Erans with 13 points- while Jeriel Torres added 10. Mayaguez shot 32 percent from the field- as well as 32 percent (10-31) from the 3-point line- they shot just 20 percent (1-5) from the free throw line. The Tarzans had 15 turnovers and 16 assists in the defeat.
Both teams had a hard time finding the bucket in the early going. Bonner would finally get a pair of free throws at the 16:25 mark to give the Tars a 2-0 lead. After a Cesar Ortiz basket with 10:10 in the opening half the Tarzans led 16-15. Yenor would hit back to back 3-pointer's after a Bonner 3-ball during a 9-0 run that gave the Tars a six point advantage (24-18.) After a Dayton Gumm dunk at the 6:21 mark of the half Rollins led by 10 (30-20.) Rollins would stretch that lead to 17 (42-25) at the intermission.
Yenor had 11 to lead The Tars in the opening half- while Bonner and Recio had seven each in the opening half. They shot 48 percent as a team in the first 20 minutes- 40 percent (6-15) from the 3-point line- and- 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line. The Tars had 11 assists and five turnovers in the opening half.
The Tarzans were led by Erans and Jose Cruz with five points each in the half. They shot 33 percent in the first 20 minutes- 36 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line- and- 50 percent (1-2) from the free throw line.
The Tarzans scored the first four points of the second half before Recio hit another 3-ball for the Tars. After a Bonner 3-pointer at the 17:14 mark Rollins led 52-29. The Tarzans would show some fight on this night though. After a 3-pointer by Kenneth Perez they got to within 14 (59-45) with 11:45 to go. Rollins would go on a nine point run and stretch the lead back to 23 (68-45) with 7:55 to go after a pair of Connor McKim free throws. A Brooks Cluzton jumper would give the Tars what would be the biggest lead of the night (70-45.) Ultimately the Tars would come away victorious 81-53.
The Tars will take a week off before being back in action on 11.26 when they take on Webber International at Warden Arena. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
