The trio of Jah Nze, Omar Figueroa, and Marshall Klug combined for 50 of Rollins 84 points and a buzzer beating tip in by Matus Malovec lifted the Tars to a 84-82 win over the Union University Bulldogs on Sunday in the home opener at Warden Arena. With the win Rollins improves to 1-1 on the season. Union falls to 0-2 as they lost by a total of five points to Lynn and Rollins in the last two days.
Figueroa got Rollins off to a better start than in the opener yesterday as he hit a pair of triples to start this one. After some back and forth Rollins took a 15-14 lead on a Matus Malovec trey at the 13:30 mark of the opening half. That lead grew to five (22-17) on a Figuroa hoop at the 9:52 mark of the first stanza. The two teams would trade blows until a 3-pointer by Will Watts-Lovings put the Bulldogs up 31-29. A triple by Figueroa gave Rollins the lead back at the 3:34 mark. Ultimately the Bulldogs would take a 39-37 lead into the halftime break.
Rollins shot 42.9 percent from the field, 53.3 percent (8-15) from the 3-point line and perfect 5-5 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. Union shot 44.1 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (4-12) from the 3-point line and 83.3 percent (5-6) at the free throw line in the opening half.
The teams went back and forth to start the second until the Bulldogs scored five straight to take a 49-45 lead after a Jamir Allen 3-pointer with 15:58 to go. A Ryan Renfro jumper at the 13:32 mark gave Rollins the lead once again at 52-51. The lead went to six for Union (64-58) on a three-point play by Watts-Lovings at the 9:08 mark. Rollins clawed back into this one as a they went on a 8-0 run as Figueroa knocked down a three, Nze had a three point play and Marshall Klug tipped in a miss to make it 71-66 RC at the 6:22 mark. The next five points went to UU and then the game was tied again, this time at 73 with 4:52 to go. The Tars got a pair of free throws from Ricky Ghedini and grew the lead to five (79-74) as Klug played one in with 3:27 to go. Again Figueroa found the bottom of the net at the 2:06 mark to put the Tars up 82-77. The Bulldogs would fight back and tie the game at 82 after a jumper and a 3-ball by Watts-Lovings with 46 seconds to go. For the second straight day the Tars would have the game go down to the final buzzer as this time it was Malovec who tipped in the 3-point miss as time expired.
Jah Nze led the Tars with 21 points, Figueroa added 16, and Klug tallied 13. Rollins shot 51.6 percent from the floor, 45.5 percent (10-22) from the 3-point line, and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line in this one. The Tars won the rebounding battle 35-31. They had 17 assists and 10 turnovers in the contest.
Union was paced by Watts-Lovings who poured in 31 points, Allen added 17, and Terrence Ringo tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. UU shot 48.4 percent from the floor, 30.4 percent (7-23) from the 3-point line, and 78.9 percent (15-19) at the free throw line. They had nine assists and six turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when the University of Fort Lauderdale comes to Winter Park. Tip time is slated for 7 PM.
