The Rollins Tars won a third straight game Saturday as they were a 86-58 winner over Saint Leo at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. With the victory the Tars improve to 8-3 on the season and 4-1 in the SSC. While Saint Leo drops to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the SSC.
As he has all season long Sam Philpott once again led the Tars in scoring. Today he put up 25 points. Jeff Merton also scored in double figures with 14- Eric Castaneda had 11- and- Parker Davis chipped in 10 in his first career start. The Tars shot 53 percent as a team on the day. They shot 36 percent (9-25) from the 3-point line. Rollins shot at a 83 percent clip (15-18) from the free throw line. They easily won the rebounding battle 37-21. Rollins had 21 assists and 17 turnovers as a team.
Saint Leo was led by 20 points from DeAndre King- Isiah Hill added 10- and- Junior Searcy chipped in eight.
The Lions shot 44 percent as a team and 31 percent (9-29) from the 3-point line. They shot just 56 percent (9-16) at the free throw line. They had 16 assists and 20 turnovers as a team.
The Tars opened the game with an 11-1 run to start. That run was countered right away though by the Lions who would go on a 14-0 run to take a four point lead (15-11) at the 13:45 mark of the opening half. Rollins would battle back and retake the lead 25-24 after a Castaneda old fashioned three-point play midway thru the half. The Tars would finish the half on a 19-4 run to give them a 16 point halftime lead (44-28.)
The second would start just like the first did as Rollins would go on a 12-4 spurt to take a 24 point lead (56-32) with 14:02 to go. Rollins would lead by as many as 31 (78-47) with 4:26 to go.
The Tars are off for Finals week and will be back in action 12/18 and 12/19 when host the Las Vegas Classic at the Doolittle Center. They will face Midwestern State at noon on the 18th, followed by West Texas A@M at noon the following day. You can catch all the action on RollinsSports.com
