The Rollins Tars bounced back after a 33 point drubbing at the hands of Embry-Riddle earlier in the week to knock off Tampa 58-47 at the Bob Martinez Sports Center. With the win Rollins improved to 5-3 and evens there conference record at 1-1. With the loss Tampa fell to 2-7 and 0-3 in the SSC.
Rollins was paced by Brooks Cluxton and Hutton Yenor who each had 13 points- while Dayton Gumm netted 10. The Tars shot 50 percent as a team- 29 percent (5-17) from the 3-point line- 83 percent (5-6) at the free throw line. They had 13 assists and 17 turnovers as a team. The Tars won the rebounding battle 34-24.
Tampa was led by 12 points each from Martin Lakovic and Pat Bacon. Lakovic had 10 rebounds- while Bacon was held well under his scoring average. The Spartans shot 36 percent as a team- 19 percent (5-26) from the 3-point line- and- 67 percent (6-9) at the free throw line. They had six assists and 12 turnovers in the contest.
Both teams would start slowly as Tampa led 4-3 four minutes in. Gumm and Cluxton would then spark a run that made it 17-10 in favor of the Tars. Rollins would lead 32-23 at halftime.
The second half would see the Tars zone disrupt Tampa and hold them to three points over the first six minutes to open up a 44-26 edge after a Cluxton old fashioned three point play. The lead was cut to 48-40 at the 7:13 mark but Trevor Recio would nail a 3-ball and a layup to stretch the lead back out to 13 and Rollins would coast from there.
The next Tars game will be after Finals week as they will battle second ranked Nova Southeastern at Rick Case Arena. Tip time on Saturday is set for 4 PM.
