The Rollins Tars pulled off a huge upset Saturday when they shocked top ranked Nova Southeastern 86-85 at Rick Case Arena. With the win the Tars improve to 6-3 and 2-1 in the SSC. The Sharks fall to 6-1 and 2-1 in the SSC after the loss.
Jokobi Bonner paced Rollins with 20 points- including what would prove to be the game winning jumper. Dayton Gumm-and- Hutton Yenor both had 14 for the Tars- while Connor McKim added 11. NSU had three players score in double figures paced by Mikkel Kolstad with 28- Mark Matthews added 27 to go along with eight rebounds- and- five assists- while Connor Zinaich added 10 of his own.
Rollins would score the games first five points on a 3-pointer by McKim and a Gumm dunk. They would lead 11-5 after a Gumm layup at the 15:23 mark of the opening half. NSU would go on a 11-2 run to take a 16-13 lead after a 3-ball by Kolstad at the 13:19 mark of the opening stanza. After Gumm split a pair of free throws Rollins trailed 26-22 at the halfway mark of the opening half. Rollins would battle back and take a 30-28 lead after another Gumm basket with 7:16 in the half. The Tars would extend the lead to 34-28 on a Bonner hoop at the 5:17 mark of the half. The Tars would lead by double digits (42-32) after a pair of Yenor free throws with 1:38 before halftime. The Tars would take a nine point lead (44-35) into the locker room.
Rollins was led by Bonner with 10 points in the opening half- while Gumm netted nine- and- Yenor had eight. Rollins shot 64 percent in the opening stanza- just 14 percent (1-7) from the 3-point line- and- 88 percent (7-8) at the free throw line. The Tars had 10 assists and nine turnovers in the opening stanza. Rollins led the rebounding battle 18-11 at the break.
NSU was led by Kolstad with 14- while Matthews added 10. They shot 38 percent as a team- 38 percent (6-16) from the 3-point line- and- 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line. They had 10 assists- and- eight turnovers as a team in the half.
Nova would trim the lead to two (48-46) after a Kolstad 3-ball but the Tars would answer. Yenor would knock down a three of his own. NSU would again battle back and knot the game at 60 with 9:42 to go. Brooks Cluxton and Gumm would score to put the Tars back on top. Rollins would stretch the lead to eight (71-63) after a Gumm 3-pointer at the 7:14 mark. The Sharks would score the next seven to make it 71-70 after a Matthews jumper at the six minute mark. The Sharks would take a 74-73 lead after a Connor Zinaich jumper at the 4:44 mark. After Yenor split a pair of free throws the Tars would retake the lead on a McKim 3-ball at the 3:10 mark. McKim would split a pair of free throws and the Sharks scored the next five to go back on top 79-78 after a Nick Smith free throw with 1:28 left. Bonner would give the Tars the lead back with a bucket at the 1:06 mark. Yenor would hit a pair of free throws but NSU would tie it on a 3-pointer by Kolstad with 26 ticks left on the clock. Bonner would hit what proved to be the game winning jumper with three seconds to go. Kolstad would turn over the ball at the other end as McKim would drain a pair of free throws. Kolstad made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final score as the Tars beat the top ranked team in the country for the third time in school history.
Rollins will be back in action when they head to Las Vegas to take on Drury in the Holiday Hoops Classic. Tip time next Saturday is set for 3 PM.
