For the second straight game the Rollins Tars downed a top 25 opponent when they knocked off #25 Drury 72-67 in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic. With the win Rollins improved to 7-3 on the year. It was the second straight game they knocked a team from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Jakobi Bonner led the Tars with 23 points- Dayton Gumm netted 18- and- Trevor Recio scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Tars shot 38 percent from the floor but was 27-33 from the free throw line (82 percent.) The Tars won the rebounding battle 37-31. They shot 22 percent (5-23) from the 3-point line. Rollins had 11 assists- and- 10 turnovers in the contest.
Asa Huchison scored 14 for the Panthers- while Brandon Emmert and Isaac Johnson netted 12 points each. The Panthers shot 43 percent as a team- 40 percent (12-30) from the 3-point line- and- really sturggled at the free throw line (3-14 for 21 percent.) The Panthers had 16 assists- and 16 turnovers as a team.
The Tars led early on and was up by nine (24-15) after a Gumm 3-pointer with nine minutes to go in the half. Drury ended the half on a 22-6 run and led 37-30 at the intermission.
Rollins was down nine early in the second half but battled back and took a 59-56 lead on a Bonner 3-ball with 4:47 to go. The Panthers tied it on the ensuing possession, but a Brooks Cluxton old fashioned three-play gave Rollins a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. The Tars iced the game by going seven of eight at the free throw line down the stretch. That was the difference in the game as Drury was just three of 14 at the foul line. Rollins with the win advances to play in the finals against the winner of Pittsburgh State and Montana State-Billings. Tip time is set for 3 PM and you can catch all the action on RollinsSports.com
