Winston Salem State (6-0) trailed by 14 points with 15 minutes to go before going on a 18-0 run and went on to defeat the Tars 77-70 to win the 36th annual Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament.
Tournament MVP Paul Davis had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Rams. Dominic Alston had 13, Shelton Carter 12, and Marcus Wells 11 for the Tournament champions. Winston Salem State shot 43% for the game including a red hot 56% in the second half. The Rams were 8-24 from long range and 17-27 (63%) at the foul line. The Rams crushed the Tars on the boards 42-28 after being -3 in the first half. The Rams had 15 miscues.
The Tars (9-3) lost for just the third time in the 36th annual Tangerine tournament. In the process Rollins had its 4 game win streak snapped. The Tars had three players in double figures in this one. Myk Brown and Nikola Baran scored 17 points each to lead the hosts. Nick Wolf had yet another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Tars shot 44% for the game but just 36% in the second half. Rollins continued to struggle from beyond the arc on the season as they shot just 26% (5-19) Thursday. They were 23-30 (77%) at the charity stripe. The Tars had 17 turnovers and 15 assists as a team.
Flagler (7-2) knocked off Washington Adventist (2-10) 76-72 in overtime in the consolation game. The Saints blew a 13 point second half lead before securing the win. The Tars will be back in action Sunday January 2nd when they will travel to the Bob Martinez Center to battle Tampa (10-0). Tip time is set for 4 PM.
