The Rollins Tars had one of the biggest wins in school history over #2 Florida Southern on Wednesday night. So many wandered what would they do for an encore? How about Sweeping the defending Sunshine State Conference regular season champs. Rollins turned the trick with a hard fought 61-59 win at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
The Tars (10-9 4-5 SSC) moved right into the logjam at the top of the SSC with the win. Four Rollins players scored in double figures in the second big win of the week. Alex Blessig led the way with 16 points on the day. Chris Uhle used a solid day from the 3-point line to score 14 points going four of six from 3-point range. Adam Allen and Mitch Woods added 10 points each despite battling foul trouble all day long. The Tars shot 43 percent (24-56) from the field on the day. They struggled from the 3-point line in the win going six of 25 ( 24 percent.) The Tars shot 70 percent (7-10) at the foul line. They had 14 assists and 14 turnovers.
The Lions (16-6 4-5 SSC) fell to 9-3 at home on the year. They were paced by 15 points from Jerrell Harris. Ron Foxx had 14- and- Chim Kadima netted 10 in the loss. The Tars zone gave the Lions trouble once again. Leo shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field. They also shot 36 percent (8-22) from the 3-point line. Leo was a solid 79 percent (15-19) at the foul line. The Lions edged Rollins on the glass 35-33. They had 14 assists and 17 turnovers.
The Tars picked up right where they left on Wednesday in the early stages of this one. Rollins would jump out to a 10 point lead (17-7) in the early stages of the opening half. As most good teams do the Lions would have an answer. This time a 10-0 spurt that would knot the game at 17. The Tars would have the lead for much of the first half, but the Lions would regain the lead 29-28 in the final minute. Harris would nail a 3-pointer and give the Lions a 32-28 halftime lead.
Rollins would score the first six points of the second half and take a 34-32 lead. The Lions would get the lead back, only to see three Woods free throws and a Uhle 3-pointer give the Tars a four point lead (42-38) with 13:12 to go. The Tars would stretch the lead to as many as 10 but the Lions would battle back once again. A Harris 3-pointer would tie the game at 57 with 1:09 to go. For the second straight game Blessig would hit a huge basket late that would give the Tars the lead this time 59-57. Woods would get a steal and lay up to stretch the lead to four (61-57) with 24 seconds to go. Devin Crisosto would cut the lead in half with eight seconds to go. Blessig would miss the front end of a one and one to give the Lions one last chance. The Tars defense which has been tops in the league all season long came up with one last stop as Harris missed a desperation 15 footer and preserved another big Tar win.
