The Rollins Tars gained a split of the season series with the Nova Southeastern Sharks with a 81-72 win at Warden Arena Saturday. With the win the Tars improved to 12-11 overall and 6-7 in the SSC. With the loss NSU dropped to 11-13 and 7-5 in the SSC.
Alex Blessig had a career day. The transfer from Florida Gulf Coast knocked down seven 3-pointer's on his way to 23 points- Adam Allen netted 22 behind five 3-pointers- Mitch Woods added 17 points and nine assists- while Chris Uhle scored 11 in the win.
The Tars shot 51 percent (26-51) from the field in the game. They shot 46 percent (13-28) from the 3-point line. The Tars shot 80 percent (16-20) at the foul line. The Tars had 22 assists and just 10 turnovers.
NSU had three players who scored in double figures. Justin Jeangerard paced them with 24 points- Brian Cahill notched 16 points- and Casey Carroll tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Sharks shot 44 percent (24-54) for the game and 46 percent (19-41) from the 3-point line. NSU won the rebounding battle 31-28. They had 19 assists and 15 turnovers.
The Sharks controlled the game for much of the first half. Blessig started off the scoring with his first of seven 3-pointers but that would be the Tars only lead of the opening half. The Sharks led by as many as seven but the Tars would knot the game at 22 with 8:31 in the half. The Sharks would have a slight edge for the rest of the half and led by four (43-39) at the intermission.
Perhaps inspired by the ceremony that honored the 03-04 Tars team that went to the elite eight at halftime the Tars came out with new energy in the second stanza. Halfway thru the half Rollins would use a 10-2 run capped off by a Allen 3-pointer to lead by five (59-54.) The Sharks would have a quick run and the Tars would have an answer. They would lead by as many as 13 before completing the victory, avenging a 54-46 loss to Nova a few weeks ago.
The Tars will be back in action Wednesday. It will be the final home game of the year, as they will face Lynn. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM. You can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and worldwide at RollinsSports.com
