The Tampa Spartans completed a season sweep of the Rollins College Tars with a 72-57 win at Warden Arena on Wednesday night. Tampa improved to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Tars fell to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in the SSC.
Tampa was led by four players in double figures on the evening. Da'Markco Foster led the way with 20 points for UT- Vincent Cornu added 13 points and eight rebounds- Ryan Kidd chipped in 12- while Jordan Davis stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points- eight rebounds- six assists- and a pair of steals. The Spartans shot extremely well from both the field 55 percent (22-40) and the 3-point line where they shot 69 percent (9-13.) The Spartans struggled at the foul line where they shot 59 percent (19-32.) The Spartans won the rebounding battle 32-29. They had 13 assists and 12 turnovers.
For the Tars three players scored double figures. Mitch Woods led the way with 17 points. Adam Allen posted 14- and- Alex Blessig chipped in 12 in the loss. The Tars shot 38 percent (18-48) from the field. Of the 48 attempts, 32 came from the 3-point line where the Tars shot 34 percent (11-32.) They were not much better at the foul line where they shot 59 percent (10-17.) The Tars had 12 assists and 13 turnovers.
The Spartans would jump out to an early lead and never look back. 10 minutes into the contest it would be a 12 point Spartans lead (21-9.) The Tars would finish strong in the first half and cut the deficit to five (28-23) at the break.
The Tars would get to within two (36-34) with 14:26 to go and would have three chances to tie or take the lead but could not get over the hump. The Spartans would lead 44-37 mark before a Scott Schuette lay up would cut the deficit to five. The Spartans would then go on a 8-0 run and cruise to the victory.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday at 4 PM when they take on the Eckerd Tritons. Tip time at the McArthur Center.
