The Rollins Tars won a hard fought, tight contest inside Warden Arena Wednesday, when they knocked off Florida Memorial 66-64. With the win the Tars improved to 4-2 on the season, while Florida Memorial fell to 3-3.
Four of the five Rollins starters scored in double figures Wednesday. Sam Philpott led the way with 18 points- Jeff Merton and Eric Castaneda each had 12- while Deion Clark added 11. The Tars shot 41 percent as a team- 27 percent (9-33) from the 3-point line- and- 64 percent (9-14) from the free throw line. The tars had 16 assists and eight turnovers.
The Lions were led by Travis Mitchell with 16 points- Evens Jacques had 11- and- Devon Williams netted nine. The Lions shot 45 percent as a team- 26 percent (6-23) from the 3-point line- and- 60 percent (6-10) from the free throw line. The Lions won the rebounding battle 40-31. They had 4 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
The Tars got off to a slow start in this one and did not take the first lead of the game until a Merton 3-pointer midway thru the opening half. It was 26-25 Rollins at the 6:28 mark of the first half. The tars took a eight point halftime lead (35-27) after a 3-pointer from Connor McKim.
The second half would stay close, as Florida Memorial would get to within one (43-42) at the 13:01 mark. In the next four minutes the lead would change hands seven times, but a quick spurt by the Tars would give them a 56-52 lead at the 8:15 mark.
The Tars would not be able to shake the Lions as Memorial would go on a 7-0 run to give them a 62-60 lead with two minutes left. Philpott knotted the score at 62 with 1:01 to go. Merton would give the Tars the lead on a tip in at the 37 second mark. Castaneda would make two big free throws and the Tars hung on for their fourth straight win.
Rollins will take a break and be back in action and take on Embry-Riddle Wednesday. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM
