It is never easy when traveling to Boca Raton and Saturday was no exception. The Rollins Tars came away with a 82-76 win over the Lynn Fighting Knights. With the win the Tars improve to 2-2 and 2-0 in the SSC. The Fighting Knights fall to 0-2 and 0-2 in the SSC.
Four of the five Rollins starters scored in double figures Saturday. Sam Philpott led the way with 24 points- Deion Clark had 16- Eric Castaneda netted 15- and- Jeff Merton returned after the missing last two games to score 10. Connor McKim added 10 assists for Rollins.
The Tars shot 56 percent as a team in the game. They shot 41 percent (7-17) from the 3-point line- and- 71 percent (17-24) from the free throw line. They had 21 assists and 13 turnovers as a team.
The Fighting Knights were led by 22 points from Ryan Peterson- Jamal Palmer added 17- and- Randy Bell tallied 12. Lynn shot 43 percent as a team- shot 27 percent (9-33) from the 3-point line- and- 53 percent (9-17) at the free throw line. The Fighting Knights had 18 assists and 14 turnovers. They also won the rebounding battle 41-27.
The game started with the Tars leading 9-7 after the first media timeout. Lynn would take a 13-12 lead at the 11:32 mark of the opening half. Rollins would maintain a slim lead and it would be stretched to six (24-18) after a Philpott layup with 6:16 in the opening stanza. The Tars would stretch the lead to nine and that would be the halftime lead (35-26.)
The Tars would stretch the lead to double digits early in the second half. McKim would make it a 11-point game (46-35) at the 15:47 mark. Castaneda would knock down a 3-pointer and stretch the lead to 15 (53-38) at the 11:28 mark. Castaneda would again bury a 3-pointer and the lead would be back to 14 (58-44) with 9:38 left. Lynn would cut the lead to five (58-53) after a Bell 3-pointer with 7:01 to go. It would be a game of runs the next several minutes and the Tars led by five (72-67) with 2:08 to go when Castaneda drilled another 3-pointer. The Falcons would get to within four a couple times late but that is as close as they would get.
Rollins will be back in action Tuesday when they battle Puerto-Rico Bayamon. Tip time is set for 7 PM.
